It feels unreal, I can't believe I am about to have a master's degree?? @mikaylas.tbr (as well as most of my close friends/family) knows I have a thing for lighthouses, and themed my grad gift with a cute lighthouse themed romance novel and quilt coat. It made me want to track down other lighthouse stuff I had too! I can't locate my lighthouse passport, but I found a couple other stuff. During our Lighthouses of Martha’s Vineyard workshop last week, we stopped with the group at Gay Head Light twice. That gave us the opportunity to shoot the lighthouse in different ways. On the second time around, National Parks at Night instructor Chris Nicholson (@photographingnationalparks) found this angle from down the hill, next to an abandoned house. A few technical aspects went into creating this: First, Chris shot with a Laowa 20mm shift lens, which enabled him to prevent perspective distortion, thereby keeping all the vertical lines of the house and the lighthouse nice and straight. As for the exposure, Chris used a Ledlenser P6R Work flashlight to subtly paint the foreground to make it appear as if it might have been illuminated by the lighthouse. For the background, he waved a black card in front of the lens during the exposure to create the “beams” effect. Here’s some more photos of our day out to Tobermory lighthouse on the Isle of Mull🏴 Wildlife is always something we love to see and I (Lucy) have personally never seen a magpie that is grey and black before. Only ever seen fully black ones, so wanted to make sure I got a photo of them. Always make sure we take David’s binoculars with us as 2 weeks prior to this photo being taken, John Coe and Aquarius, the West coast resident orca/Killer whales had been seen here. Of course, if you know us you know we love boats. Not so much massive boats like this but any boat is good enough for us! Sunshine Coast ☀ Double Island Point Lighthouse Cooloola, Queensland Constructed - 1884 Automated - 1992 This location was actually identified for a lighthouse in 1864 but it took another 20 years before it was finally constructed. The lighthouse was first exhibited on the 11th September 1884, and was the 18th light to be constructed by the Queensland Government. The original light source was an oil wick burner with an intensity of 13,000 candela. The apparatus was fixed, with revolving panels. Double Island Point is actually not an island but a coastal headland, situated just north of the Sunshine Coast. The lighthouse is still in service today. Back to regularly scheduled lighthouse content 😉💡 📍 Castle Hill Lighthouse in Newport, Rhode Island 💡 This lighthouse was completed in 1890 and it’s 34 feet tall. It’s a cute little lighthouse on the beautiful rocky shoreline of Newport. This lighthouse was automated in 1957. 🚶🏻♀️ This lighthouse is technically on private property, and there are signs stating as such everywhere you go. However, when you go to the Castle Hill Inn grounds, look for the small sign on the right that indicates “lighthouse parking.” From there, it’s a short walk to the lighthouse. I’ve been to Newport more times than I can count and this was my first time visiting this lighthouse. Obviously I’ve known about it, I just was always cautious about visiting due to it being private property, but I decided to give it a visit because I have wanted to see it for a while. “Beacon of Yesteryear” This is my first image from my latest outing to Hartlen Point. It’s the location for my newest video that I hope to upload tomorrow to my channel, so be on the lookout for that. These are the remains of an old wooden lighthouse (one of only a few remaining in Nova Scotia). It, of course, is missing the lantern portion (which was removed on purpose in 1978). The lighthouse was built around 1877. This was a technical image in that it involved focus, focal stacking and a long exposure. To make the lighthouse, my subject, larger while maintaining the rocks leading into the frame from the bottom, I shot at two focal lengths, 120 and 600. Those two images were blended together for this creation. Considering the lack of interest in the sky, I like the image. Such a wounderful Birthday at Southwold, a quintessential British seaside Town in Suffolk with its sandy beach and hut-lined promenade. It has a wounderful atmosphere. The red and white grade 2 listed lighthouse stands proudly stands 31 metres above the town. Only 40 minutes from Holly Lane, we enjoyed blue skies, seafood lunch at Adnams and ice cream on the pier.
