I think I’ve caught the (proverbial) fermentation bug…! These two are my latest - rhubarb from the allotment and a #gingerbug . I made a some ginger beer a few weeks ago using a ginger bug and it was absolutely delicious 😋 so trying the same thing again, but with rhubarb (it’s spring and my allotment buddies have more rhubarb than they can handle, so why not…)! They are both currently in water with possibly too much sugar in with it too. Hopefully they’ll start bubbling up in the next few days! First day back down the allotment since my ileostomy surgery today. And Big Poly T is back in business! Her first residents have been moved in - mild chillies and snacking sweet peppers, plus some mixed spicy salad leaves, and self-seeded rocket are in hanging baskets. It took me all day because I wanted to build and fill the beds and woodchip before I put the cover on, so I didn't melt 🫠 in the heat 😂 I've weighed the cover down and plan to put a thick layer of woodchip and stones around it to hopefully secure it into place 🤞 Yesterday, I weeded all along the park side fencing and secured the fence where it had started to topple. Really happy with how she's coming along so far this year. What a gorgeous day today! So lovely to have some sunshine at long last 🥰 I emptied out two neglected pallet collar beds, filled them with woodchip then topped with cardboard and then compost. These are now home to lots of strawberry plants at the back of Plot 11. This month in @gardenfolkmag, I talk about what the allotment and growing has done for my mental health. This picture was taken on 17th September last year. What might surprise you is that just 6 days earlier, I had taken an overdose after suffering a mental breakdown. If you didn't know, you wouldn't guess from this picture, would you? Speaking about my breakdown is still really difficult for me. It's a little bit surreal. Honestly, I still feel some shame about it. But I wasn't myself. After more than 9 months of losses and kicks while I was down, I snapped. I couldn't take it anymore. Oddly, I didn't want to die. I wanted to fall asleep. I wanted to be with my mum. I felt utterly alone and completely lost. Following that night, I took 6 weeks' leave from work. I spent every day at the allotment. Sometimes, just 30 minutes of sitting staring at it all. Looking at what I had built. Shortly before the end of my leave, I won "best plot" on my site and the "Endeavour" award for all sites across North Warwickshire. It was such a wonderful way to end the season. And a needed boost for me. I look at pictures of myself from around that time, and I wish I could give that girl a huge hug. The smile doesn't quite meet my eyes. But no one saw. No one spotted it. I hid it well, to be honest. I'm rambling... I wanted to share my story because I hope it helps someone else to feel less alone. To see that it's possible to come through that kind of darkness. I am never going to be 100% but I am content. I am stable. I am loved. I am worthy. Good progress on the sunflowers in the last couple of weeks. A few were pricked out and potted on and they are doing well. The biggest has now been potted on into a big pot. A few more had been sown and they are now ready to be pricked out. 🌿 HERBS 🌿 and 🍒🫐 FRUIT BUSHES 🫐🍒 We used the prepared beds to plant the fruit bushes which we left last week in a bucket of water to try and keep them alive for one week longer 😂 black currant and white currant bushes and a gooseberry. We planted them with some herbs; sage; thyme; oregano; lemon balm. We needed to sieve again to remove even more but what was saved seems really great so I'm pleased we decided to salvage the soil! We nearly just got rid of it all! Clearing the polytunnel (which we must get sorted next as the tomatoes need to go in and it's such a mess at the moment!) and decided to repair this last raised bed frame which has fallen apart in the van when we transferred it last year. We did "no dig" for this one and laid cardboard then topped it with some manure and then used the soil we had sieved last weekend from that mess-pile at the front of the plot, picking out as much junk and mess as we can and layering it with "the food parts". Today's job was to continue tackling that big pile of mess at the front of the plot, and continue to sieve the usable soil from the plastic and rubbish that was dumped there. We shovelled into the sieve, put the usable soil into our composting bays for now, and then wheel-barrowed all the rubbish to the tip. One of those jobs where it feels like you've worked really hard but it doesn't look as dramatic a difference as there is still a ton to get through!! Tomato tunnel currently under reconstruction ready for this year’s plants. The cover was ripped to shreds by the wind at the end of last year. The new cover has been attached and just needs a bit of trimming. The plan is to make some borders and the wood is currently being propped up in place until they are constructed. Then it’ll be a good tidy up and it’ll be ready to go when the plants are. Some progress pics of the front of the plot which we worked on some more today, finally peeling back the covering and getting our rhubarb plants in for next year. The slugs had eaten them so hopefully they will come back to life 👻 under the covering there was a huge mound of really great quality soil so we sieved that into the No Dig raised beds that we have been setting up ready for seeds soon.
