🤦♂️GARDEN FAIL - KEEPING IT REAL 🍓 Since Instagram isn’t just about pretty pictures, why not share this week’s garden fail ? Because yes, the people behind all your favorite account are just mucking about most of the time 😋 So I gave my strawberries a straw-mulch, since the first fruit was already forming. Now since I couldn’t source the straw from my usual place, I thought: ‘I use straw in the chicken coop, I’ll just use that. After all…straw is straw, right?!’ 🙄 Turns out that this straw still contained a lot of seed material…and with the warm and wet weather we’ve been having the last week…you guessed it. 😳 The seed happily welcomed its new conditions and sprouted both massively as vigorously. In a few days’ time, my strawberry patch was, basically, a wheat field 🌾 I had to go in and remove all of the straw again, weeding as I did, and replace it with a new top dressing to keep those strawberries safe 🍓 So yeah, turns out, straw isn’t always just straw 🤣 #gardenfail #gardenfails #gardenfailfriday #gardenerslife #strawberrygarden #growingstrawberries

Serious sweep of the strawberry bed today! It’s the third season of this bed and it’s not producing as much as last year which is typical since they decline starting in the third year or so. I’m grateful for the last harvests, though - I froze it all today to last a while for smoothies which my kids eat every day. We’ll be moving soon and I’m planning on bringing runners to start a new bed if I can! These are June-bearing Sequoia berries and they’re so delicious!

It won't be long until these tunnels will be full of our sweet-smelling strawberries 🍓 These tunnels are part of our earlier crop which will be picked and sold in our farm shop - keep a look out as in the coming weeks our famous Lifton strawberries will be making a come back! Why do we use tunnels? High tunnels provide protection from unfavourable weather conditions, including wind, hail, frost, and excessive rainfall. This can translate into a better survival rate of strawberry plants, as well as earlier berries. When I need to use a little organic spray on my garden, I do it at sunset so it doesn’t burn my plants with the sun. If you see any inch worms, I recommend BT spray. I also planted some basil seeds and I’ll plant some marigolds too. It’s fun to be able to grab little strawberry snacks as I’m working around the garden. These are both plants that started as runners from last years strawberries. I don’t grow them as a serious crop, so I’m not too concerned with removing flowers in their first year. I just enjoy what I get (and the birds and snails get the rest 🤣.) Also the mystery bulbs under my Japanese maple not only turned out to be alliums, they are also blooming! Big surprise to me because I planted these years ago, dug them out of a different area of the garden, and threw them in the corner to let them rot naturally. Not only did they not rot, they survived the summer sitting on top of the soil - fully exposed - and then rooted in and sprouted this spring. And now flowers?? It’s so nice seeing people on other accounts already out in their gardens, but with our average last frost date being around May 22nd, it’s indoor gardening for me for a while still!
