Catastrophe… It’s not often I shed tears over garden failures but I admit this one has really upset me. The curling and shrivelling on these tomato plants is likely due to aminopyralid contamination. No, this isn’t from shop-bought compost or cheaply sourced horse manure. It’s from my own home made compost. With a bit of help from some gardening experts on a fb group the suspect is the hay that I use for the rabbit. Yes, a tiny amount of hay sprayed with a weedkiller then added to my compost bin (there can’t be any more than about 5% rabbit bedding/litter in the mix) has caused the destruction of pretty much my entire tomato crop. All that time and effort wasted, not to mention the thought that my poor rabbit has been eating this s**t has made me so angry. I now have a couple of cubic metres of compost that I can’t use and it could take years for this to wear off. #womenwhogarden #growyourown #gardenfails
🤦♂️GARDEN FAIL - KEEPING IT REAL 🍓 Since Instagram isn’t just about pretty pictures, why not share this week’s garden fail ? Because yes, the people behind all your favorite account are just mucking about most of the time 😋 So I gave my strawberries a straw-mulch, since the first fruit was already forming. Now since I couldn’t source the straw from my usual place, I thought: ‘I use straw in the chicken coop, I’ll just use that. After all…straw is straw, right?!’ 🙄 Turns out that this straw still contained a lot of seed material…and with the warm and wet weather we’ve been having the last week…you guessed it. 😳 The seed happily welcomed its new conditions and sprouted both massively as vigorously. In a few days’ time, my strawberry patch was, basically, a wheat field 🌾 I had to go in and remove all of the straw again, weeding as I did, and replace it with a new top dressing to keep those strawberries safe 🍓 So yeah, turns out, straw isn’t always just straw 🤣 #gardenfail #gardenfails #gardenfailfriday #gardenerslife #strawberrygarden #growingstrawberries

GARDEN WINS We’ve been having some trouble with the garden lately. Lots of pest pressure. Slugs… we’re aware of. Others, no clue. For example, (and, remember, we’re fully in buckets) the tomato seedling had sprouted. And, now… disappeared. Not a sign of it. 🍅 Here’s another one… a very healthy, close to six inches tall with multiple true leaves Zinnia just fell over. We checked on it.. completely chewed off at the stem at soil level. Dug around to feel and see the soil… healthy, developed roots. So anyway… trying to lift our spirits.. here’s a gorgeous garden win to feast your eyes on. Golden Ragwort. Looking good. Mit Misserfolgen lernt der Gärtner. Hier sieht man Römersalat und Cima di Rape - eine Art Broccoli. Zuerst nach dem Keimen zu dunkel gestanden. Ich hatte sie nämlich im Keller und damit nicht im Blick. Dadurch sind die Pflanzen vergeilt. Danach zuviel Sonne und Hitze im Gewächshaus. Jetzt fallen sie nicht nur um, sondern sind auch von Läusen befallen. Die torffreie Erde ist in der Jungpflanzenanzucht auch schwieriger zu beherrschen. Die Wasserspeicherfähigkeit des Substrats sind schlechter. Es ist auch von der Struktur sehr grob. Da tun sich die Wurzeln wohl schwer. Egal aus Versuch wird man Klug. I have moved this little Yuki Deutzia many times. It has struggled with our full sun after a tree was cut down and no longer gave it an afternoon sun break. I moved it to a shadier spot and still nothing. I tried one more spot thinking that’s it if it doesn’t work oh well. It was planted behind the Alice Oak Leaf in very bright light situation and would you look at it now some small little blooms - not many, but enough to let it be and see how it goes. #duetzia #gardenfails #gardenfailsandwins

I don’t care how cute they are, squirrels are my arch enemy 😤 I did go through and do a light trim, just so that the torn off branches would at least have a clean cut. And she's putting out new leaves! Chugging along like nothing happened. I'm really impressed with how tough this Japanese maple is, she even survived the polar vortex without any protection. And right when she started budding up... the squirrels attacked 😒 It could take years for it to grow back to the full, beautiful shape it was originally, so I'm really torn on whether or not I should replace it. Yesterday we finally upgraded the pepper and chilli seedlings from seed trays to nursery pots. I took these photos just after the careful and delicate process of potting them on... Moments later, the whole tray of Red Cherry Chilli Peppers (which admittedly had been balanced a tad too precariously on a stack of propagator covers) toppled over and onto the floor 🤦♀️ Low and behold the porch transformed into a muddy wet mess! But thankfully all four seedlings were unharmed in the drama and were swiftly re-potted 😊 Suffice to say, Florence looked on in her classic cat judgey way. Another hard freeze is expected, so I suppose this is the last of my tulips for the year. I planted most of my bulbs last fall, and everything that’s bloomed is what’s left after the battle with the moles/voles we had. 😬🤪 The bulb lasagnas I planted haven’t bloomed at all (well 2 bulbs are emerging out of the 30 or so i planted in 3 pots?!?) I was pleased at first to see so many honesty plants (Lunaria annua) coming into bloom around the garden. However, on closer inspection (pics 2&3) I noticed dark blotches on the top surface of the lower leaves and unpleasant powdery pustules on the undersides. After checking the RHS website I think this is ‘white blister’ a disease related to downy mildew and whose infection and spread is favoured by wet weather. There is no control for it so I’m afraid the affected plants will have to go. Heartbreaking as honesty is such a joy in the spring garden. Evidently some weeds , especially groundsel, can act as winter hosts for the disease so I shall be weeding with a vengeance from now on. I shall also be heavily thinning my snowdrops and emerging alliums to increase the airflow in some beds. A win for my capsicums! This summer I decided to try capsicums but it's been a slow and unlucky start. My first few harvests of capsicums were unsuccessful with brown spots developing. The #brusselsprout plants are showing every indication of being all brussel and no sprouts. How these #gardenfails keep consistently happening is entirely beyond me. Honestly, it’s pretty disheartening, but I’m always determined to get something out of it. So decided to cut 3 of the smallest and least promising to the ground. I made a fave #brusselsproutsalad with the leaves and sautéed the rest with #pearlonions. Let’s talk about failures. I planted Gladstone onions twice and both times resulted in 0% germination. I planted spinach three times and only twice did I have any of them sprout. Even the two times the seeds germinated, a very small percentage resulted in a sprout. Literally 1-2 out of 12 or more and it’s honestly frustrating. I’m seeing such fast and promising progress with MOST of my seedlings that it just seems impossible that any of my seedlings would not sprout. But it happens! I am new to gardening. Completely. I’ve never grown a plant on my own, and definitely not any edible plants! So the successes that I am seeing are amazing, considering I have no clue what I’m doing! Some times there will be times when something in my garden doesn’t go according to plan. But that’s okay. It’s normal. It’s a part of learning and a part of the journey. So what now? I’ve had mixed success from the flowers that I sowed on the 12th February. I’m never as successful with flowers as I am with vegetables. Maybe I subconsciously give more care to the vegetables because they are what I love more, but this year I’m really trying with the flowers as Bean loves them so much. The hollyhocks, phlox, pansies and erigeron that I sowed are all no shows (well, apart from one out of sixty hollyhock seeds). In the other tray, I’ve had good germination from the other flowers and am in the process of thinning those ones out. I’ve tried many times to get phlox to germinate using different techniques, and it just does not work for me. Erigeron I struggle with, too. The hollyhocks I am disappointed with, as I really love the Chaters double apricot, but I just seem to struggle to start them. One thing that gardening has taught me is the ability to let go 😐 over and over and over and over again. This area contained strawberries, yarrow, first year milkweeds, lupine, meadowsweet, wild ginger, goldenrod… and although I put up markers to say “don’t plow past these bright orange poles!” The plow shoved the entire garden area 3ft forward 😶 so we brush ourselves off, adjust the plan, and try again. ⚠️ Achtung: Flieder schneiden Aus eigener Erfahrung möchte ich mit diesem Post anderen Gartenneulingen einen wichtigen Tipp geben: ➡️ bitte klärt zuerst ab, ob ihr einen Sommerflieder oder den gewöhnlichen/gemeinen Flieder habt, bevor ihr zur Gartenschere greift! ⚠️ Der Gemeine Flieder (Syringa vulgaris) ist nämlich mit dem Sommerflieder NICHT verwandt! Wenn man seinen Garten wie ich, von jemandem übernommen hat und sich durch die ersten Gartenjahre wurschtelt, dann macht einen womöglich niemand auf diesen kleinen, aber äusserst wichtigen Unterschied aufmerksam. Beim Flieder werden die trockenen, braunen Rispen nach der Blüte abgeschnitten und danach bilden sich die Blütenansätze fürs nächste Jahr (Bild 1). Der Sommerflieder hingegen wird jetzt, ab Mitte Februar, zurückgeschnitten. Ich habe mich leider durch die zahlreichen gutgemeinten Videos und Beiträge dazu verleiten lassen, unseren Flieder zu schneiden 🥺 und habe daher alles falsch gemacht, was man beim Flieder falsch machen kann (Bild 2). Zum Glück reichte die Zeit dann für die zwei letzten Flieder nicht mehr, so dass ich mich hoffentlich an deren Blütenpracht erfreuen darf. I haven’t grown my own Potatoes for awhile, I never have great success with them but I’m giving them another try!🥔 I’m trying just main crops, King Edwards, to see how I get on. I think the trick is plenty of water in the summer months and for them to be planted in a decent compost with plenty of fertiliser…I never grow mine directly in the soil as I haven’t got the depth for them in the raised beds or good soil in the borders (too much clay) so they’ll be going into grow bags around mid April🥔 Main crop don’t need to be chitted as they’re in the ground for a much longer period of time compared to the early varieties, but I want to give mine a good head start so they’re sitting on a bright windowsill in an egg box! Not everything runs smoothly the trick is not to give up. My first round of beans are now growing nicely. I did think they wouldn’t make it as after I planted them we had a very light late frost and the ground temp didn’t warm up until late December so my first round of seeds I planted directly didn’t grow. Chunky roast pumpkin, carrot and coriander soup-stew with homemade wild garlic and bulb garlic focaccia breads! It’s mid January and there’s still loads to eat in the veg garden, as well as tasty things made and preserved earlier in the year! Tonight’s veggie dinner is pretty much all from the garden, barring the focaccia bread bases that were dug out the freezer to use as garlic bread as a last minute addition. This is my fall kohlrabi harvest, the whole row. It is getting very cold this week, low of 14 on Monday night, so I pulled them all out. I didn’t get much, but I knew that I planted them late. I usually plant them the first September and this year it was almost the end of month. They were super sweet and delicious, they just didn’t have enough time. They did remind me how much I like them and to plant them on time next year!!! I rarely cook them. I just peel them, slice them, and eat them raw. Fun fact about our shed: I was in the labour room giving birth, while I managed a shed to be picked up for free with the help of our friend with a van. // REALITY CHECK // Keeping it real here on my grid -because it’s not always pretty 🫣 There’s been some highs and lows in the greenhouse today… Highs - some of my anemone corms have sprouted and I was able to pot them on. Hurray! 🎉 Lows - some of my anemone corms have gone mouldy and will need to be thrown away. I started this white celery from seeds last winter. They have had very little growth. I am not sure if the issue is weather this year or if it is something that just won't successfully grow here. I do not know if I should transplant into pots and move them indoors, to see if they grow. Or if I should just get rid of it and try again next year. Celery experts, I need advice. Not posted for nearly a week. Life and all that, but just got home from work to check the garden and my God it’s in a mess 😂😂😂 With all the rain we’ve had, things are growing out of control especially the blackcurrant sage which is waaayyyy out of control and needs cutting back. The broccoli struggled today with the warm weather. I did pre water the planting spots and water them in last evening when I planted them. Check out the three photos where the plants (2 broccoli and 1 kale) look just peachy- Guess what is different about where they are planted? I planted them in my old compost holes (compost holes varying from 2 weeks to 2 months old) I wonder if it was the extra moisture? It’s fascinating. Oh No!! ‘Ripen your tomatoes in a paper bag with a banana’ didn’t work!!! 🤔 Only a few days gone by and they are on their way straight to the wormery only! At least they won’t go to waste, but I usually don’t put so many whole tomatoes in the wormery because the seeds then become a million seedlings if the compost gets any light! Cabbage white caterpillars on the nasturtiums and broccoli. Think next year I’ll definitely forget growing broccoli as they’ve been completely decimated. Very much a case of ‘how it started’ vs ‘how it’s going’ 🙄😨😅 My lovely cosmos took a beating on what my sister said looked like they’d had a comb over in last week’s storms…EVEN though I’d attached them to the fence for support…turns out twine isn’t as strong as wire so next year wire it shall be! 🙄 Managed to pull them up and they’re ok ish, enough for the bees to feed on them so that’s the main thing…even though the weight of them snapped some of the dahlias below 😔 Also, has anyone ever collected cosmos seeds and grown them the following year? Is it successful? I finally admitted defeat against the squash bugs this year and cleaned up the pumpkin patch earlier than I wanted. I managed to save these three tiny pie pumpkins though. They’re too ripe to eat, but will make great decorations in the coming months.
