Milkweed update. The trays of swamp, butterfly and common milkweed finally showing signs of life. Started in November last year, they were left in the garden protected from the squirrels and raccoons with the garden mesh. These plants are grown for @torontonaturestewards to be planted in the ravines stewarded by them across the city. In case you are wondering why do they have to be on a table, with the spread of invasive jumping worms, we want to grow plants raised above the ground so that in case there are jumping worms in our area (luckily we have not found any in our garden space), that they are not spread from one place to another. This is usually how invasive species spread and we want to make sure that do whatever possible to stop their spread. If everything goes as planned, these seedlings will be potted up into individual pots in a few weeks and then planted in the ravines later on in the fall when the plants have become more established. #milkweed #wintersowing #communitygarden #stewardship #landrestoration #pollinatorplants #milkweedformonarchs

I’m supposed to be working on some landscape recs for a client right now, but instead I’m taking a minute to share the progress of my #wintersowing ! Everything I started a couple of months ago is growing strong, and as soon as I get a minute I’ll plant them out in the garden. Only changes I would make next year are maybe seeding a little more heavily. I hate wasting seeds, so I don’t like the idea of overcrowding or having to thin seedlings. Winter sowing seems to be more of a “survival of the fittest” method, so I think I’d do well to plant a little more heavily, at least with the less precious seed varieties. . . #zone5gardening #seedlings #gardenersofthepalouse #nocotiana #larkspur #poppies #marigold #bupleurum #wintersown

I write so much about winter sowing native plants in the middle of the winter but don’t always follow up with the outcome. This year I had about a 90% success rate with germination (i.e. the number of different native plants, not seeds I was able to germinate) using my foil baking pan approach. This week my project will be getting these seedlings that are bursting out of the trays into their own larger pots by chunking out small sections of them. Depending on the plant, they’ll stay in the pots until this fall, next spring, or even next fall when they’ll be ready for the rough and tumble world of my rewilded yard, a plant friend’s yard, or one of the local parks when I give them to friends who do restoration work. The plants that I have the most success winter sowing are the sunny perennials that bloom within a year or two such as tickseeds (coreopsis), brown or black-eyed susans (rudbeckia), and digitalis species (penstemon). Biennials like common evening primrose (Oenothera biennis) are also great winter sowing candidates. I also winter sow desirable habitat plants I don’t often see at the local nurseries like the false indigo bush (amorpha fruticosa) that I’ve mentioned hosts 27 species of butterflies and moths in metro Atlanta. Most plants, including trees, shrubs, and the trickier shade plants I leave to the experts to propagate and buy at local native plant nurseries. (I’ll again offer my soup to nuts winter sowing presentation this fall – I’m hoping to find an aligned organization to host me, so stay tuned this summer!) Would love to hear what your favorite plants to winter sow are. #wintersowing #wintersowingnativeplants #nativeplantbabies #springgardening #nativeplants #rewilding #georgianativeplants #propagatingplants #nurturenativenature

Verbena bonariensis is one of my favorite flowers. I first saw it on @gardenersworldtv in @themontydon 's garden. I couldn't get it to germinate inside but it did beautifully when wintersown in milk jugs. This is the second spring it's returned for me and it seems to be taller and more prolific than ever. Deer, rabbits, and aphids have decimated plants in the same bed some summers but totally leave the verbena alone. Lasts well in the vase when picked at the proper stage and creates interesting seed pods that can be used for texture after the blossoms fall off. Definitely recommend it if you haven't tried it! #perennials #cuttinggarden #deerresistant #verbena #wintersowing

An hour and a half of garden work this morning. I had good helpers. We weeded green beans and cucumbers, adding more seeds in the empty spots (had some not germinate and others maybe had their tops eaten or somehow damaged). We put in 26 homegrown tomato plants (Rutger's) and about a dozen homegrown peppers (various kinds). We weeded the few surviving broccoli and lettuces. We sowed 3.5 rows of okra (Clemson spineless). Finally, I potted up some gifted daylily seeds that I sowed in a milk jug ("winter sowing" method). Whew!

First ever home grown salad! Life has been wild here with helping our youngest son navigate some major life changes (great new job, new apartment, moving away from home) all in the space of a few weeks, so my plans for spring have gotten a little derailed. But not completely! Although I stopped trying to keep up with the #100daysofwonder2024 art prompts, my days have been FILLED with wonder! I've managed to squeeze in a few minutes here, an hour there, into making a new garden (in ground and containers) in the back yard, and this salad is my first harvest! I can't express the thrill it gives me to have something I grew in the winter (sown into small trays of soil, protected under transparent plastic bins) actually survive and be ready for its first gentle harvest! This is just the outer leaves of my baby lettuce, spinach, arugula, and a few pansy flowers, just because. I love it! It's just enough for us each to have a tiny bit with our dinner tonight. 😍🌱 #freshsalad #smallspacegardening #containergardening #wintersowing #makeshiftgreenhouse #backyardgarden #babylettuce

New this year: trying the winter sow method. These seeds have been outdoors, in these jugs, since January of this year. Almost all of the jugs have growth, some more than others and only two that don’t seem to have any activity yet. This was fun for the kids and I to get our hands in some dirt during the cold winter months. I’ll share updates on how these seeds/seedlings progress! They are all perennial flowers for us to start landscaping and providing for our pollinators. SO EXCITED to be diving into flowers and more medicinal herbs this year ❤️ Stay tuned! 👩🏻‍🌾 #alwayslearning #gardengrowth #flowers #wintersowing #zone4b

They say #gardening is success after a series of failures, which is good, because we might be starting off this backyard garden with a number of failed seedlings 😂 this winter we tried #wintersowing in milk jugs. It worked beautifully until the last few days of 80 and 90 degree weather came out of nowhere and cooked our little seedlings inside their greenhouses! We planted them anyway. If they’re too far gone, we’ll try again and learn for next year 🤷🏻‍♀️

Seedling space swaps. My winter sow spot was a temporary use of a new raised bed which had not yet filled with soil. The cold frame was getting too hot for the hardy greens and I want to move all the seedlings out of the basement and for the cold frame to be available for those plants. So everything gets moved around. The winter sown stuff is sprouting which is cool, most especially the native lupine seeds - which I appear to have spilled into many of the pots, oops! . #seedlings #wintersowing #coldframe #successionplanting #growfoodathome #growfromseed

Time for a garden check in! It’s almost May, and here’s where things stand: 1) rhubarb doing its thing 2) onions I planted a week or two ago popping up 🧅 3) strawberry plants looking very happy 🍓 4) peas coming up strong in the raised bed 🫛 5) ranunculus patch looking healthy and green, but no buds visible yet 🌸 6) potatoes in grow bags that I planted two days ago 7) peony going strong (planted 7 new tubers last year, I can currently find 4 that are coming up. Did not mark the spots where I planted well 😆) 8) tulips & white grape hyacinth doing well 🌷 9) winter sown seedlings (larkspur here) still doing well in their jugs 10) crocosmia that over wintered successfully! . One of my other #wintersowing successes is this lettuce. The leaves and roots are so healthy and have been in the containers outside through snow, frost and warmer weather. The last picture is 2 days after transplanting and they look great. Second year doing this type of lettuce and it's my preference to crowd the plants to keep the leaves smaller. I decided to give winter sowing a try this year and started about 20 different types of perrenials. These are the two container types I tried…free standing deli-type containers, and small pots inside larger Rubbermaid totes. So far I think the totes are a better option…more convenient, easier to water, and the plants seem to be doing better. We shall see! #vermontgarden #wintersowing #zone4bgardening

4/28/2024, 8:47:25 PM

Time to transplant those winter sown seeds! Here’s how… Plop the whole plant mass out of the jug and notice the root system! Many seeds in a small space create quite the network, but also limits how big the plant can grow in the jug itself. Transplant as soon as it’s temperature appropriate for that specific plant type. Break up the bottom root system to loosen it up. You can plant the whole mass as is, separate into smaller chunks, or tweeze out each individual plant. The more space a plant is giving to grow on its own (meaning not sharing space with another close neighbor) the larger it will be able to grow. For greens, I don’t mind them being very close together unless I’m trying to grow a head of lettuce. Don’t be afraid to pull roots apart. As long as there’s a nice tail on the plant they will adjust fine in the ground. These lettuce seedlings were completely hands off after I put the seeds in this jug in January. They just grew inside when it felt good to them and I transplanted when I had the time to do it. I chose to interplant these lettuces in between purple cabbage to fill in blank spaces which will reduce weeds and give us lots of fresh salad to eat! Winter sowing is an excellent way to start plants and grow more food. Anyone else love when it rains on the day you planned to water? 😇🌧️ Newly planted winter sowing seedlings are doing so well. Lupines (pic 2) and spotted bee balm (pic 3) I planted about a week ago. Lupines are forming some new leaves and the bee balm truly looks like it has doubled in size. First pic is of the prairie aster - never grown this aster before so I’m really excited to see how it ends up looking! I planted these seedlings way earlier than I did last year- I followed the rule of planting them when they either are two inches tall or when they have two sets of true leaves, whichever comes first. So far so good 🙌🏼
