Our Homeschooling Kids Gardening School classes learnt about the lifecycle of a chicken and embryo development this week. Our Monday class set chicken eggs in the incubator and our Friday class added quail eggs. With the different incubation times between chickens and quails they should all hatch around the same time. Hey y’all! I’m Alisa & here is a little bit about what’s been going on in my world! 😊 I started gardening when I was giant pregnant with my 1st born about 7 years ago! I decided then that it was something I would want to do with my future children. From then, it’s been a beautiful adventure! From eating raw veggies to having little time to tend to said veggies because.. kids.. We have loved all of the phases! - Their marvel at the worms, tendrils, and literal food growing in our backyard. -The fact that they will willingly taste any raw veggie in front of them! It’s all been completely worth it. The garden has been a true passion project for me and has even become a source of income for my family. As a former teacher and instructional leader I am so grateful that I get to bring together all of my joys by teaching science lessons in school gardens. Then I dug the trench, flipping over the sod so that it's upside-down on top of the manure layer, and overing the rest with dirt dug from the trench. Lastly, I put a thick layer of wood chips on top, and let it sit for a few weeks before planting. Do you enjoy planting seeds? A few days ago, we started our pumpkins, zucchini, and cucumbers. It seemed like the perfect time to discuss seed preservation a bit more. This beautiful work offers a look at the importance of seed banks around the world. What a spectacular story to share this gardening season! Saving Delicia is the story of a young girl named Kari, who enjoys spending her afternoons in the shade of the delicia tree. Each afternoon, she listens to her friend Otis tell old stories. His stories tell of a time when there were delicia trees everywhere. Kari can't even imagine it! After all, Kari and Otis sit under the only delicia tree left. With delicia trees famous for their delicious fruit, Kari comes up with a plan to save the seeds from the fruit. She doesn't stop there, though. She encourages others to save the seeds of flowers, trees, vegetables, and beans. Everyone begins to join her in her effort. I don't want to spoil the ending, but the book comes full circle. What a spectacular story to share with young readers to show how one person's actions can change the world. I really enjoyed the information about the Global Seed Bank and other seeds banks around the world. Seed banks play such an important role in protecting our planet's biodiversity! This year we launched an entrepreneurial initiative called, “The Tomato Plant Project”. Our St. Andrew’s Episcopal Lower School Junior Master Gardeners were given an investment of tomato seeds, soil and a pot to grow their seeds. They were tasked with finding more investors in order to purchase potting soil and pots to transplant their seedlings. ❤️🍓❤️ I keep seeing strawberry stones for sale all over my feed. The theory being they will fool the pesky birds that swipe all your strawberries. So I figured I would give them a try. But diy it cause why not. Do they work? Idk yet. I will keep you posted. Was spending a day collecting the "strawberry" shaped stones with the little one & then painting the stones alot of fun? Yes! Perfect for the dreary spring day. It was a great day working in the garden with our St. Andrew’s Episcopal Lower School Junior Master Gardeners. With the spike in the temperature, we have more weeds popping out. Weeding, typically this is not a popular task among gardeners, so using the right tools to do weeding is important to make the task at least a bit more bearable and not feel overwhelming. a bit more bearable and not feel overwhelming.
