Day 78 - A morning of jobs. M mowed the lawns. The girls popped to see the neighbour for her birthday. We went to Grandma’s for lunch and saw Phil’s Aunty and Uncle there (plus some cousins). Dog walk and football with friends. M has gone back to their’s for the night. The rest of us took the bus to @elleboheme . The kids had lots of fun playing with their friends. We had hoped to see the aurora together as we missed it last night (😭) but no such luck. We even all drove out to a dark sky zone in the hope of seeing them. The kids loved the midnight adventure though! Last weekend the girls and I donned our metaphorical white cloth caps and joined the Wardor Garrison camp as they re-enacted life during the English Civil Wars of the 1600’s. We had such a fun and informative time learning about that era, from herbal remedies to bodging, from cooking to military manoeuvres. We’ve covered this period several times, but seeing re enactment groups living it out brings history alive in a fresh way. Why buy 1 box of Idaho Spuds when you can buy 8!?! Do your teen’s stories look like they went on a shopping spree at Costco and then tried to fit everything in the back of the car? Encourage your teen to avoid “The Costco Trap” when storytelling. Resist the urge to cram everything into their story. Do we NEED to see a 5 minute montage of your character struggling? Would your audience understand and connect with the character and maintain interest if that montage was cut to 2 minutes? A budget provides structure and constraints. Your stories need the same things.

Yesterday, we went to the zoo and got to see the brand new snow leopard habitat. We also gave the wheel a spin to give us the challenge of using less energy for heating (which is easy as we don't need it on atm with the heat). There was also a little wall of elephant bits like feeling the elephants tail or seeing the way we do vs. the way elephants do. We got so lucky seeing all of the animals yesterday. Do you feel like you're not getting it right, not doing enough, aren't good enough, patient enough, etc, etc? Too many people focus on trying to change the way you're think about what you do. They might even try to make you feel better about what you do. It's well intended but generally bad advice. The trouble is, what you think and how you feel is an OUTPUT from your brain. And you can't change an output with another output. If you want better output, you've got to understand how the brain works. Input --> Interpretation --> Output If your brain receives bad input (information), you're going to get bad output (thoughts, feelings, actions). If you want better output, you need to give your brain better input. Good Input = Good Output The 3 input systems your brain gets information from are: 1. Exteroception - awareness of the outside world. This is your 5 basic senses (taste, touch, sight, sound, smell). 2. Interoception - awareness of bodily sensations and feelings. This is things like your heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, your stomach and gut (full vs empty), etc. 3. Proprioception - awareness of body position. This is how you know how to touch your nose with your finger with your eyes closed. Your brain has awareness of the position of your body and joints. If you improve your inputs (information going to your brain), your brain can make better sense of the world, make better decisions and give you better outputs - better thoughts, feelings and actions. Starting soon, I'm going to take a select group of parents through the exact steps to improving their capacity, patience and unschooling using brain-based training. Grackle action/This week in May from last year Grackles are admittedly not my favourites. They tend to bully at the bird feeder, work in groups to steal baby cardinals and are very boisterous. However, without the cottontail bunny nest and cardinal nest of last year, they are the main sign of spring in our backyard at the moment when in comes to animal life. And it’s been fascinating. The other morning as I was passing by the kitchen window, something very boisterous caught my eye. In amongst the tulips was a larger than life grackle. He was poofed way out with his wings out in the air, madly dancing and the sun was hitting his iridescent feathers in such a way that he looked magnificent. I realized this had to be the mating dance. Then this morning to the side of the house a lot of noise came from our roof and I saw a female grackle land with a beak full of greenery, I’m assuming for a nest. A few more grackles flew around and I saw this male who seemed to be keeping guard because he was there a long time looking, looking and looking in all directions. If your goal is to foster a love of learning, a trust in your child’s ability, and a mutual respect for feelings, then honoring when our child is done with a learning activity is equally as important as honoring when they ask you to stop roughhousing or anything else. I expect some pushback on this. “But what about teaching resilience?” “But what about finishing what you started?” These are character traits that develop over time. And they are far more meaningful when your child develops them because they have a personal reason, not because it’s required by an adult. By honoring their boundaries in learning, you are supporting that personal development and growth, and helping them learn to trust their bodies and brains when they need a break - an incredibly important skill to carry into adulthood! How do you honor the boundaries your child sets for themselves?

Looks idyllic, and it was until the walk home. Then my 23 month old decided she wanted carrying and I refused. Then she screamed and cried all the way home. Then when we got home she wouldn't let me in the door and continued to cry and scream and cling to my leg. I had to go lie down to recover. This is parenthood. It's such a mix of joy and frustration, of ease and challenge. Its moments of one followed straight away by another. Its experiencing every emotion in the space of one afternoon. I haven't posted much recently as we have been getting into the swing of a new routine. We had no car for the whole winter and I was in this slow, hermit kind of phase which was great. Now we have a car and both have two jobs each and are suddenly juggling work and childcare with keeping up with household chores. Change always brings some kind of chaos at first, but I know things will settle down soon. Also, now I work at a school I get the whole 6 weeks of school holiday off work! (Not that I like the school holidays as it's always busy everywhere 😂) I love spring so much and I wish it could stay a little longer. You can't behave better than your brain lets you. If you want to behave better, your brain has to work better. So, how do you get your brain to work better? Well, it helps to know why you have a brain. You don't have a brain to think or feel or make plans. You have a brain for one reason and one reason only: to move. Every part of your brain is there to facilitate movement. Things that don't move don't need a brain. So, if you want your brain to perform better, you've got to move BETTER. Getting *more* movement can be a great help in and of itself. That's why ANY exercise is so useful to help improve mood, behaviour, anxiety, depression or pain. But BETTER movement is a whole other thing. When your brain can move you BETTER that's where the magic really happens. So, starting soon, I'm going to take a select group of parents through the exact steps to improving their capacity, patience, and unschooling using brain-based movement. Have you taken your children on an excursion to visit a sitting court yet? Gaining an insiders view of a court is a fantastic way to teach our children aspects of Civics and Governance and give them a fabulous learning experience as well. Our homeschool group visited the High Court of Australia yesterday. We had an experienced tour guide who really engaged the children (and parents). The children learned so much! As a lawyer I make sure our children have a range of resources to learn about our legal system and principles of justice, but some can be so dry and boring! Taking them to see how the court works in real life and appreciate the everyday of courts was so valuable - complete with news crews outside recording landmark rulings!

A whole day of friends 😍 They've paddled, picnicked, picked wildflowers, and have played so many games I can't keep up. They had a lot of fun playing Jacobites and Red Coats! 💂 I love when they incorporate what they're learning into their playtime, teaching each other things without even realising because, of course, to them it's 'just playing' 😍 Also, who else is loving the warm days and light nights ❤️ I think we spend most of our time outdoors at the minute! Day 77 - Alexia very kindly offered to tutor the children for an extra day this week so today I was able to take all the bowel meds and just worry about me. I’m doing a lot better for it. There’s always some frozen flower concoction in our freezer. Today she wanted to see how long it would take the ice to melt in the greenhouse. I can’t believe we’ve nearly finished Joy’s first school year 📚 She has a love for learning, a quick mind, and a very good memory. I’m not sure I’ll be able to keep up with it in the years to come, but for now I’m safe 🤣 I’m looking forward to teaching her to read properly over the next school year, as I know she’ll be so excited once she clicks that there is a whole new world to books that she hasn’t quite discovered yet ✨ She now knows her alphabet, the sounds of each letter, and how to write each, simple addition & subtraction, and reading 2-3 letter words. Her memory has retained a whole lot of information. 👌🏻 She’s thoroughly enjoyed going to a local homeschooling co-op each week as well, where she does science, dance, and art classes. This week Tilly has been baking, she made some harry potter sorting cupcakes and some cookies, walking the puppy, she made her own game of mehjong, and today we took the puppy into town to visit her brother at work and pop to Starbucks for his first pup cup. Did you know that a new theory of what caused disease developed in the industrial period? 🧑🔬 Scientists came up with the theory of spontaneous generation. 🔬 Microscopes had improved with the development of better quality lenses, so scientists were able to see microbes properly for the first time! This young lady celebrated her 10th birthday on site with us today. She has been part of our Friday Home Ed crew for many years. She is a kind, considerate, thoughtful soul who is one of the first to offer help to anyone who needs it. 🎂 A mud kitchen cake was made in her honour, complete with chalk sprinkles. 🐅 Dartmoor Zoo - Follow Up 🐅 When we got home from @dartmoorzoo we did some follow up work, the boys chose an animal that they saw and wrote a fact file about them. They also made a tally chart at the zoo of herbivores, carnivores and omnivores, they used this data to draw a bar graph. 🕷️ POND DIPPING 🕷️ What better activity for a sunny afternoon than a spot of bug hunting and garden pond dipping!.. The boys have had lots of fun, looking at how many different pond creatures they can find and trying to identify them.. They took it in turns to use the net to take a scoop of pond water and empty it into their exploratory tray.. they then used their treasure tubes to take a closer look.. William was fascinated by the skeleton leaves that he fished out of the pond, so we have set some of these on the side to dry out to explore further..
