When collecting found nature treasures, it’s always a good idea to have a conversation with your child about what is appropriate to take, and what should be left undisturbed - some treasures are to be appreciated just where they are found and should not be disturbed. Adhere to the rules: Do you need permission to collect? Be sure to have permission from the landowner if necessary and be aware of local laws surrounding collecting natural items. As an example, here in the UK, it is illegal to take any kind of natural materials from public beaches under the Coastal Protection Act 1949, and The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 makes it illegal to possess birds’ eggs. Only collect what is abundant: Do not collect anything from a rare or scarce species. Choose treasures that are abundant, then by taking one or two items will not disturb the ecosystem. Collect with care: Tread lightly as you forage to avoid damaging surrounding areas. Diatoms, Blood Cells, and Petri Dishes Oh My! Week 3 in Nature Study Club’s NEWEST unit study, MICROBIOLOGY, has us diving deep into the micro world like no other! In just 3 days our explorers: 💧Learned that diatoms are found in various aquatic environments, including freshwater, marine ecosystems and moist earth habitats. 🩸Created blood cell models, observing that blood cells are part of the animal and human circulatory system, responsible for transporting oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. 🧪And grew their own growth mediums using gelatin and beef bouillon powder or cubes and observed their results! ✨All of these group activities, as well as individual, age-appropriate student workbook activities, are included in just one week of the unit at an incredible value! And the fun to be had this week isn’t over yet! Tomorrow our explorers will continue their learning with 🎲 Gameday Schooling with an original Microbiology themed game created by @wonderhousecreative, and enjoy Poetry, Paint & Sip with Miss. Is unschooling going to magically mean that your child will never have a meltdown again? I am sorry to deliver you bad news but the answer to this question is, no. What unschooling can and does do, if you are willing to accept the challenge, is make life and learning better for your child by centring them and creating a space which is responsive to them and enables them to learn and grow at their own pace. Here are some ways to facilitate your child’s learning: Join in your child’s interest. Whether it is big or small, fleeting or a deep dive, show engagement, show support and show up. Join your child where they are. Accept your child for who they are, right now, on this day in time, in this moment. No judgement, no expectation, no encouraging them to do more. Join your child from a space of emotional neutrality. Leave your own expectations, excitement, frustration and impatience elsewhere. Join your child’s timeline. Be responsive to what they need in this moment, on this day. It can mean that they are finished with an activity before their peers are, it can mean that they might not go at all today to that group you had planned on attending. Centre your child and focus on building safe secure relationships with them that build unconditional positive regard for them and respond to what they need. Centre your child and focus on a safe physical space for them to be able to confidently grow from. Professionals lead parents to believe that they know best and that parents can’t possibly take care of their children without them. There is a place for professional support, please don’t read this wrong. We have, however, created a system by which our neurodivergent children are offered support solely so that they can fit in and access a mainstream education. Speech and language therapists primarily see children in the Early Years, EHCPs are written so that children can be supported and regulated in a classroom setting, the whole autistic assessment is based on “problematic” behaviours when compared to neuro-normative standards. When you remove school from the equation and centre your child then that all changes. And the first hurdle is parents understanding that they are the expert on their child.
