New Blog Post- Exploring the Beauty of Abandonment: Photographing an Abandoned Trailer in the Nevada Desert In late October 2021, I set out on a road trip to meet some old friends in Laughlin, Nevada, for a concert. Rather than fly, I decided that a photography adventure was definitely long overdue. I packed up my film cameras and camping gear and headed out the door. After spending a gorgeous October day meandering through Yosemite National Park, the afternoon light started falling upon Tuolumne Meadows as I headed out of the park on the Tioga Road pass towards HWY 395. At that point, I grabbed some gas station coffee and decided to make a midnight run and see how far I could get into the night on my journey through Nevada. After driving for several hours, my eyes started to get bleary, and it was time to find a place to put up for the night. I originally planned on camping and sleeping in the back of my Tacoma for most of the trip, but the night air was a little bit too chilly, and with it being so late, I decided to spring for a cheap hotel in Tonopah, Nevada. By the looks of the parking lot, it was a mix of long-haul truck drivers, cowboys, derelicts, and midnight riders. After paying for my room at the front counter, I packed all my camera gear up two flights of stairs, and I turned in for the night. From the upper-level view, the hotel parking lot looked even more seedy and unruly than it did from the ground level. I'm a little bit embarrassed to say I slept with my pistol on the nightstand, which is something I can honestly say I've never done before in my entire life. Final stage; patination After discovering the wonderful potential of fumed patinas, I immediately wanted to experiment with them. A seemingly straight forward concept; simply offering a chemical to the surface and watching. In reality the complexity of application being a skill only attributed to time spent experimenting, and ultimately excepting alternatives through the pursuit of initial starting points. The patina pictured was not an anticipated outcome, but nonetheless one that I found to adorned the piece eloquently, the plan being to then lacquer and wax. However during the lacquer application, two drips formed on the second coat and consequently needed to be stripped back; only to begin again. I’ve never been interested in running any tests before hand on work, believing the results to be a potent source of direct learning that is both invigorating, and proving time and time again to be a vital part of my process. Sometimes superheroes wear bows in their hair 🤗 It will be time for Bertie to go to Birmingham soon for her heart check up. Day to day we don’t see a big difference, but little instances pop up as a reminder. Like this weekend the Smalls have spent a lot of time on their trampoline as you may have seen in my stories. Bertie seems to tire a bit more than her sisters and takes regular little breaks before joining back in the fun. It could be entirely unrelated, but as a mum to a heart patient I’d be lying if I said I don’t notice it and it’s the first place my brain goes to. Like it does when we cuddle and I can feel her heart beating and I have a moment of anxiety 🥲 But another way of looking at that is that it’s important I pay attention. Her consultant will want to know if we’ve noticed anything different further to the physical checks they do to keep their eye on her heart. So I try to be kind to myself and understand that it’s natural to be concerned and only right that I am. Isn’t that being a mum? This year has been has a lot, but my journals have been there for me when I feel I need to let go of everything bottled inside of me.
