Eine #Ringeltaube (𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘮𝘣𝘢 𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘮𝘣𝘶𝘴) baut seit Tagen in der #Felsenbirne (𝘈𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘦𝘳). Das Pärchen brütet hier schon seit ewigen Jahren, vielleicht wurde das Nest in der Zwischenzeit aber auch schon vererbt. In den Jahren ist hin und wieder ein Ei oder ein Küken aus dem Nest gefallen, aber insgesamt bekommen sie das mit dem Nachwuchs gut hin. In case anyone has ever considered espaliering (is that the right conjugation?) a rose 3 years after it was first planted *and* then waited until May to do so, I'm here to tell you that I've learned the hard way that it makes more sense to do it 1) when it's small and 2) much, much earlier in the year! 🤣 My Paul's Scarlet Climber was not having any of my espaliering nonsense, especially not the branches that have grown to be about half an inch thick. 🤣 I'm lucky I didn't end up with more scratches! Anyway, I sort of have the rudimentary framework in place and that will have to do until next year, March I think, when I - hopefully - will get to work tying it up properly. But for now, I'll just be tucking the most disobedient branches into place while enjoying the gorgeous scarlet blooms! Endlich sind die Kartoffeln in der Erde 👍😁 Eigentlich stecken wir unsere Kartoffeln schon immer im April. Doch dieses Jahr war es im April so nass, dass wir den Boden nicht fräsen konnten und somit auch nicht mit der Beetvorbereitung beginnen konnten. Doch nun war es einige Zeit warm und trocken und wir konnten endlich beginnen. Also haben wir zunächst Rasen gemäht, dann mit unserem Einachser und der Anbaufräse den Boden vorbereitet und anschließend mit unserer Radhacke Rillen gezogen. 💪 Zwischen den Reihen haben wir einen Abstand von 80cm und innerhalb der Reihe ca. 30cm zwischen den einzelnen Knollen. Gesteckt haben wir vier verschiedene Sorten: 1. Corinna (früh) 2. Bamberger Hörnchen (mittelfrüh) 3. Emiliana (mittelfrüh) 4. Granola (spät) Abgedeckt wurden die Rillen dann mit Komposterde und nach dem Gießen mit einem Kulturschutznetz abgedeckt, denn letztens Jahr hatten wir an den Kartoffelpflanzen sehr viele Kartoffelkäfer. A close-up of the mottled carmine glory of a rhododendron planted in the garden decades ago by my mother . The plant has grown now above by my head and has flowered since early April. I think it might be the hybrid called 'Cornish Red' . I've grown on some seedlings that have all come up with very similar flowers. This ability to come more or less true perhaps accounts for the variability of the 'Cornish Reds' you see in Cornish gardens. Some forms are better than others. I like to think that this one is close to the form originally bred by Mr Smith, an English nurseryman in the 1830s. THIS DOG! You wouldn’t believe how much more comfortable and happy she is since moving. She barely used her toys, never played outside, never played fetch. The list goes on! We started to think she had been put in the wrong body and was secretly a snoozy cat haha! Flash forward to the new house, she has a garden now and lots more space. The landing is now a doggy’s dream bed area and she’s constantly face first in her toy basket! She plays on the landing and has zoomies downstairs every day. She’s becoming much more independent and even though we are sat in the living room watching something (my back has gone I’m in absolute agony. Some of the worst pain I have experienced and i don’t know what’s caused it, hoping a few more rest days will help - not feeling optimistic though! Worst timing I just want to be getting my allotment area ready! I have the help of some very good people so I’m well cared for and so are my plants!) she is outside sunbathing on her own. She’s a very anxious dog, we are with her 24 hours a day and she was born in covid so she’s very wary in public. I’m so happy she’s happy though! Hand aufs Herz: Ich gehöre nicht zu den Menschen, die Bodenproben ins Labor schicken, regelmäßig den PH-Wert der Erde untersuchen und einen ausgetüftelten Düngeplan haben. Und trotzdem wimmeln Regenwürmer und Kleinlebewesen durch meine Beete und die Blumen sind üppig und gesund. Mein Boden ist anscheinend ziemlich fruchtbar und gesund. Das Geheimnis sind jährliche Kompostgaben und meine kleinen Helfer – lebende Mikroorganismen, die die Nährstoffe aus den organischen Abfällen für die Pflanzen wieder verfügbar machen. Aquilegia vulgaris wurde schon im Mittelalter auf Bildern als Begleitgrün verewigt. Hier sieht man sie meist im Gemüsebeet als Begleitpflanze. Akelei ist nix für aufgeräumte Gärten, da sie sich stark versamt. Die Pflanze ist kurzlebig und blüht schnell, ist aber im Mittel nach 5-6 Jahren verschwunden. Vorher hat sie jedoch fleissig Saatgut produziert und für genügend Nachkommen gesorgt. Die schönsten Bilder im Garten entstehen dann, wenn man verschiedene Farben zusammensetzt und selbst untereinander vermischen lässt. Dann hat man ein schönes Farbspiel von rosaviolett und Blautönen. Aber aufpassen: in den Garten-Centern werden oft gelbe und kräftig Pinke Akelei mit weisser Innenkrone angeboten, die aus einer anderen Art gezüchtet wurden. Diese vermehren und erhalten sich meist nicht von selbst. Wer auf Nummer sicher gehen will, nimmt die reine Art Aquilegia vulgaris. Man kann die Samen selbst verstreuen oder lässt sie komplett selbst durch den Garten wandern, dies sieht meist sehr natürlich aus. Ein Vorziehen ist bei A. vulgaris nicht nötig. Das Auspflanzen geht weiter...🥰 Jetzt sind auch die Auberginen und Zucchini ausgepflanzt. Die Auberginen haben wir in vier Reihen mit einem Abstand von 80cm gepflanzt. Dann folgt eine Reihe Blumen und anschließend vier Reihen Zucchini bzw. Patisson Kürbisse. Abschließend kommt dann wieder eine Reihe Blumen. 🥰 Dieses Jahr versuchen wir diese Kulturen auf dem Feld anzubauen, denn diese Pflanzen brauchen einfach viel Platz. Cow parsley in my garden, I think it got in when I planted the dark-leaved variant called Anthriscus sylvestris 'Ravenswing' some years ago. Of course, Ravenswing disappeared after a few seasons but the type plant has spread throughout my borders. I hoik it out where it gets too invasive but i enjoy its untameable wildness , the anise scent of the foliage and the strange musky tang of its umbels that sets the hoverflies aquiver. LOOK WHO'S HERE! Look who's hiding between their own slender leaves. It's Iris graminea! It is a rhizomatous perennial, with purple or violet blue flowers almost hidden by narrow, grass-like leaves, and a plum scented fragrance. It is cultivated as an ornamental plant in temperate regions. It has several common names, including grass-leaved flag, grass leaved iris, plum iris and plum tart iris (due to its scent). This species naturally occurs in the southern half of Europe, from Spain and France in the West to Russia and the Caucasus in the East. It is found growing in scrubland, grass lands, meadows (or pastures), open woods and in rocky or gravelly soils of the mountains. It can be propagated by division or by seed growing. It rarely needs lifting and dividing. Large clumps of mature plants can be lifted between mid-summer to early autumn, then divided before being replanted. As it does not like root disturbance, so seed growing is preferred. If re-planted, they can take a year to 'settle' before beginning to bloom again. What a stunner! This was an attempt to capture a moment of pure happiness after having just walked through the old rose garden and finding these multi-colored lupine and historic irises planted together! What better plant combination is there? I first saw just how glorious lupine and bearded irises are together in the Schreiner’s Iris Garden’s display garden tour on YouTube. To see it practiced in person was unreal! The pollinators certainly loved it too.

Es ist so schön, wenn alles langsam auszieht 😍 Gestern haben wir den Spinat und die Radieschen abgeerntet, Gras gekürzt, Schnecken eingesammelt (Bild 2), ein Ranggerüst aufgebaut und unsere Gurken eingepflanzt (Bild 1). Im vorderen Teil wachsen die Gurken Persika, Marketmore (rechts) Kalomira und Helena (links). Persika bildet dicke und stachelige Landgurken, Marketmore längliche Schlangengurken. Helena und Kalomira sind parthenokarpe Sorten. Helena ist eine längliche Schlangengurke und Kalomira eine kleine, knubbelige Minigurke. Im hinteren Teil wachsen die Einlegegurken Cornichons. Diese wachsen immer als Pärchen und bekommen noch Stäbe als Kletterhilfe. Gurken benötigen übrigens sehr viel Wasser. Deshalb solltet ihr bei diesem Wetter regelmäßig eure Gurken gießen. Am liebsten mögen sie warmes Wasser. Bei warmem Wetter einfach die Gießkannen in die Sonne stellen. Im Gegensatz zu Tomaten mögen es Gurken auch, wenn das Wasser über die Blätter läuft 👍. AN UNPLEASANT TRUTH. First of all, I like cats very much. I want to make that clear. But inside all that cuddly fluffiness all cats are predators, let's not kid ourselves. About half an hour ago, my wife Sara and I witnessed a neighbour's cat preying on a Eurasian collared dove on our patio. Despite our immediate attempts to intervene, all that remained were scattered feathers. And the dove's mate on the roof of the neighbour's house. The cat though ran off with the flapping prey. We don't have our own pet cat, but there are plenty in the neighbourhood. And because of them, some days it feels as if our attempts to create a wildlife-friendly garden are quite in vain. Lizards have not been able to establish themselves here, we are finding bitten slow worms or shrews and the birds are being hunted diligently. We either see the cats in flagrante delicto - as we did today - or discover broken or crushed plant parts everywhere that give the cats away. Sara and I realise both that Mother Nature is a cruel woman. And we know the cycle of eating and being eaten. If, for example, a hawk or something else had hit the Eurasian collared dove today, it wouldn't have been a big deal - that's how it has been and always will be. But I personally believe more and more that the density of domestic cats is becoming a problem. That's why I'm asking us all to really think carefully about whether we need a cat in our household. Because if it goes outside, it becomes a predator. It can't help it, that's its nature. But we could take a little pressure off the wildlife around us. ❓❓ I'm looking forward to hearing your opinions! There is no other feeling in the world that can match sitting in your allotment, after a hard day at work. I grew these beans for cutting but a mousey 🐭 had a snack, so what’s remaining is for eating as it’s just my supply (the boys don’t eat them). I grow a lot of veg for myself and that’s the joy in growing your own. It’s so unrestricted!
