There is no other feeling in the world that can match sitting in your allotment, after a hard day at work. What a difference a few years make!! Swipe to see what it looks like now! The first picture is pretty much what the whole garden looked like when we moved in 8 years ago. There were the bare bones of a much loved garden underneath in the lawn area, a couple of shrubs and a few roses (see stories from yesterday) but it was massively overgrown and the rest of the garden pretty much looked like this. Brambles. We’ve picked at the garden a bit at a time, and this particular area is a really calm space, surrounded by trees the soft planting reflects that. The grass has a trim in March and then again at the end of the summer but otherwise it is left. We planted mixed native hedgerow down one side about 5 years ago which is really starting to bush out now. There is still an area beyond this which we are working on, it’s a deeper woodland and is where we have our fire pit for cooking. The Latin name - albeit for the English variety - Hyacinthoides non-scripta was first described by Carl Linnaeus in his 1753 work Species Plantarum, as a species in the genus Hyacinthus. The use of the phrase ‘non-scripta’ means “unlettered” or “unmarked” and was intended to distinguish this plant from the classical hyacinth of Greek mythology. That mythical mythical flower, which was almost certainly not the modern hyacinth, sprang up from the blood of the dying prince Hyacinthus. Getting these potatoes ready for planting soon! I’m going to be growing sieglinde and Haida - two of my favourite varieties! The Haida potato has been cultivated in Haida Gwaii for more than 225 years, and was only saved from extinction by the dedication of the Haida people who kept it alive in their gardens. There is no commercial source for this cultivar. I obtained mine locally from the Cariboo Seed Project. How these potatoes originally made it to the Haida people is a bit of a mystery, but I’ve read some interesting information that the Haida potato is more related to ancient Peruvian cultivars than the potatoes that have been developed in Europe which suggests it was traded up the west coast at some point in ancient times. A new tulip and perfect for #c #cheeringupmondays This was part of a rather large bulb order last autumn from @peter_nyssen and isn't it a beauty. What do you think? It started out as lemon with hints of green and quite tight, double flowers. As they've aged, so the colour has faded to more of a lemony cream. 'Avant Garde', definitely a repeater as it fits in well with other colours in the garden. Da ist die Aussicht zwar toll, aber viel lieber hätte ich mich um die Beete gekümmert. Ein Loch ( oder mehrere ) im Dach, haben nur leider über den Winter für ordentlich Feuchtigkeit im Geräteschuppen gesorgt.
