Due to having another wet day I planned an indoor activity for Gardening club today and the children absolutely loved it 😁 The children used some Gardeners World magazines donated by our Headteacher to cut up and design their very own garden and they came out amazing!! A lovely Skool Beanz Saturday gardening club this week joined by MP of Somerton + Frome - Sarah Dyke. We chatted all things children’s gardening + how important it is to teach children from an early age how to grow their own fruit + vegetables. Not only does it give them skills for life, it improves their physical + mental well-being + helps our precious nature because they learn to grow plants for pollinators + how to create habitats for creatures to live in. 🌻🫛Back to school Blog with Anson Primary 🫛🌻 That felt like the longest two weeks being away from gardening club. Before we broke up for Easter break, the children had planted lots of runner beans and peas and we were eager to see how they’d done. Now there is always the worry with gardening in a school environment that the things you grow will inevitably be left unattended for periods of time – over the weekend, during the holidays and that sometimes mean some things dying or not surviving! But what a treat we came back to with a super healthy survival rate and the making of jack and the beanstalk happening in the classroom! Our trick, positioned on a sunny windowsill and given a nice big drink (in the tray) as bags and coats were being put on for the last day of term. With a new term, came some new little faces and it was exciting to share the love of gardening with one more young person. Our new gardening club has been such a runaway success, we’re running out of jobs in our garden. Yesterday we had over a third of the children in school sign up for one session! They planted purple sprouting broccoli, beetroot, chives, spinach and lettuces. The children also made bamboo teepees for the runner beans. We can’t wait to see the fruits (or vegetables 🥦) of their labour! A glorious morning at Skool Beanz gardening club. The sun was shining + we went to look at the tulips + daffodils in our little community orchard. We plant close to a thousand tulips at Skool Beanz. When they go over, we dig them up + store them over the summer. Then in November we plant them in the community orchard. Today was all about compost!! We had Broccoli stems,paper and some very warm,smelly grass cuttings donated from my neighbour. As the children filled it up I stirred it round as much as I could and one of the children added in some water. This beautiful embroidery of the Skool Beanz allotment was created by the lovely lady who lives opposite our plot. It was created for the ‘In Stitches’ exhibition at Somerton Arts centre @acearts_somerton Members of the community, open to everyone, were invited to enter their little squares of embroidery of a memory that ‘had them in stitches’. In Stitches means laughing uncontrollably and they wanted entrants to think about their own memories of joy and laughter as inspiration. Planting Cauliflowers was chosen as a favourite moment by one of the children at Skool Beanz. It took me by surprise because there were so many vegetables to choose from that we love growing. Then I discovered these photos from that favourite moment + remembered how lovely it was working as a little team, laughing together + having fun. When gardening with the children at Skool Beanz it doesn’t matter if they don’t sow, plant + pick every single veg we grow. As long as they get to experience one part of a vegetable’s life cycle, that makes a real difference. *I have a confession to make! The perfect cauliflower in this pic is not the one we planted together. It’s from a few years ago at my work. In fact the cauliflower’s we planted together in these pics were a disaster, as we planted them too late in the season in October! Had a good sort out of all the seeds we got donated last year and I think we have plenty to be getting on with. We have plenty of flower seeds to get sowing soon to make the school grounds look lovely and bright and lots of salad and vegetable seeds to start growing our own food with. Gooseberry picking is an absolute favourite moment for lots of little beanz. We have a half plot in the far corner full of 17 gooseberry bushes. The plot used to belong to an elderly man in the village who was well know for his gooseberries and used to take them back every summer to his childhood hometown of Portland to be made into jam. Sadly he died a few years ago, so we took on his plot + decided to name it Goosegog corner + keep the gooseberry bushes for the children to enjoy. They are delicious in July + never make it off the plot as the children devour them instantly. Or we suck + chuck! That’s if you don’t like eating the sour skins but some children really love the skins too. The juicy goodness inside is so sweet. Last year the gardening club grew some dahlias from seed. They flowered last summer, and have produced their own tubers as they are perennial plants. A Skool Beanz favourite moment chosen by one of the children was when we planted the apple trees for our new community orchard next to the Skool Beanz allotment. The selection of 10 eating, cooking + cider apple trees kindly donated by @thatcherscider were planted in March 2022. The community came together + had the loveliest of mornings planting with home made tea + cake provided. The trees are lovingly cared for by Skool Beanz + local residents. We mow a path through the orchard for people to walk through + we scythe a few times a year with help from amazing volunteers including @able2achieve + the scythed grass is mulched around the trees which an air gap around the trunks, this feeds + keeps them moist over the summer. If there is a small patch of grass in your community not being used. Do consider planting an orchard. Go to your Parish Council, make friends with your local councillor + put forward a proposal.
