At it for the second year at the Girls First Community Garden. As we grow and learn as organizations and teams, the community learns and grows as well. Cultivate, Seed, Harvest…. This year, we’re moving a little more intentional with the deliverables. Our committee has grown to a robust 20 members for this campaign. Companion planting, cow panel “trellises” expanded offerings (black eyed peas, bell peppers, mustard greens, green beans and both butter and red lettuce) to go along with staples collard greens, sweet potatoes, figs, peaches, blueberries, loquats, cantaloupes, watermelons, spinach, tomatoes, yellow and zucchini squash, mint, rosemary and sage and a couple of our “next big things”, exploring renewable energy platforms to bring power to our safe haven and rainwater collection / repurposing!!!! 🌸 DIGGING THE DIRT COMMUNITY GARDEN! 🌸 We are excited to announce the creation of a new community garden in Alvaston, Derby. 🇬🇧 We are forming a charitable organisation in order to manage the site on Boulton Lane (right opposite the GP surgery). We are right at the start of this journey but with the support of @derbycc and @ymca_derbyshire we hope to create a beautiful, calming and inclusive oasis in this busy suburb. We have loads of plans yet to announce but for now we are trying to get the word out about us and the space. So any likes, comments and shares would be much appreciated. We are also looking for anyone who might want to volunteer their time to create this garden with us. Another great week at the Seed2Plate plots and the sun kept shining! The courtyard garden at Employ My Ability is coming along fabulously, the chives are flowering, the lavender is budding, lettuce is ready for eating and lots of other yummy veg coming up. The students are having a great time planting, sowing and repotting. The courtyard kitchen garden at Wimborne Community Centre - previously Community Learning & Resource Centre is positively blooming thanks to funding from the @nationalgardenscheme. The weather is finally helping us get the redesign going with herbs, veg and edible flowers being planted with more to come..... We have limited space available on our Seed2Plate course at our community courtyard kitchen garden at Wimborne Community Centre with sessions running on Friday mornings from 10.00am – 12.30pm. These FREE sessions will involve helping us to finish the redesign of the garden, planting it up and growing and harvesting food for the community lounge and fridge and will help set you up as Seed2Plate volunteer. What a wonderful sunny spring session we've had today for the @fleetarts Bloomin Marvellous project - and fantastic to be at a new venue - the beautiful Shipley Woodside Community Garden, near Ilkeston. This project is with adult carers; it feels so special, the participants are so lovely and the sessions are always such a calm, caring, inspiring and soothing atmosphere. We've loved exploring the community garden today, we made patterns onto cloth with hedgerow leaves, we made paint with leaves and flowers and we supped cups of tea and chatted - all the while enjoying the stunning setting. More photos will follow, there was so much to capture today. As part of RHS Britain in Bloom's 60th anniversary, which highlights the benefits of community gardening and this year's theme of friendship, the girls from Alfriston School sowed a variety of cut flowers which will be made into bouquets and shared with the community. On May 5th Sue Newton, from the National Garden Scheme presented a Plaque to the Par Bay Community Garden Volunteers, in recognition of the wonderful team effort that has taken place in transforming what was a derelict piece of land, into a thriving garden at the heart of the community. The garden is open daily for people to come and go as they choose, to tend the beds or harvest the produce, or simply just to sit and enjoy the green space. A popular ‘swap and share’ arrangement allows anyone to take or donate spare seedlings, plants and excess produce.
