I had a great time teaching, guiding, and hanging out with Tom this past weekend. Tom is an avid bass fisherman from South GA, but this was his first time fly fishing. The trip did not start out at all as planned. Let's just say, we had planned on orange juice; but instead, God gave us lemons. It’s been a bit Instagram! I am busier than I have ever been in my life, and so certain things have to give which is why I don’t find myself on social media as much lately. A few exciting updates though: 1) season 3 of View Finders is in pre-production and we expect to start filming in July. This season goes straight to a nationwide audience and so we will be filming all over the United States, which is exciting! 2) The show was nominated for an Emmy again and maybe we will have better luck at the awards ceremony this year. 3) I am involved in a tremendous number of video projects now and while my first love will always be photography, I really have come to love the storytelling aspect of filming and editing video. I am shooting a really cool documentary next month and I also worked on a year-long project with UGA that will be coming to Georgia PBS later this summer. . . . I love my new studio and gallery space and if you find yourself in the Athens/Watkinsville area please stop by! I will be in and out of there throughout the summer because of the various projects I am working on, so you might call or message first to be sure I’m around. This is my favorite canoe and the one I paddle the most, by far. It is a 2006 14.5 foot Mad River St. Croix R-Series. I like this short boat because it is more nimble in creeky whitewater but also paddles well tandem or solo. The R- Series was introduced in 2000 as an affordable option compared to other Mad River models. It is constructed out of a material they called “Triple Tough”, which is a layered roto-molded plastic, similar to what whitewater kayaks are made of. This makes for an extremely durable boat that stands up to a lot of abuse (as you can see in many of my videos 😂). It is also fairly heavy when compared to similar boats in Royalex or other materials. This 14.5 model weighs in at about 70lbs, and is about the same weight as the 16ft Explorer in Royalex. The St. Croix was discontinued in the early 2000s and was replaced by a newer Explorer series, which is very similar. Mad River Canoe was founded in 1971 by National Whitewater Canoe champion Jim Henry. They built the first canoe made of Kevlar in 1973 and introduced the Explorer model in 1975. Unfortunately, the company was bought out by Pelican Kayaks in 2019 and they discontinued the Mad River line of boats in 2022. Today there is still a lot of interest in Mad River Canoes, which has made them collectible, especially some of the older models with beautifully finished wood gunnels. We hosted seven (7) brand new fly fishing anglers in our group today with @veteransflyfishing . It was a gorgeous day, sunny, slightly stained water, but all 7 put fish in the net! Tom Dale, one of our first time anglers, brought this beast to net with the expert help of guide @joshholubz . Only two more outings before our spring session concludes. It’s not too early to start thinking about the fall outings. Look at the calendar and get yourself a date - they fill up fast!
