Australia very quickly won our hearts. Even though the winter there was way colder than we were ready for, especially arriving late at night in Tshirts and shorts from Fiji and having to wait for a “people mover” taxi to take us to the hostel we stayed at our first night. And the Vegemite was truly SO terrible. The birds. The trees. The foods. The people, especially. Captured our hearts and of all the places we traveled over the next 4 years our kids will still tell everyone that Australia was their favorite place to travel. For one thing, our hosts were incredible. They picked us up at the train station in their little town, an hour north of Melbourne. Welcomed us into their gorgeous 6 bedroom home with a gated driveway and handed us the keys to their Land Rover to use while we were sitting for them. Hosted a dinner for us with their friends and introduced us to people in the community we could call on should we need anything. They offered us wine with our dinner and I accepted. Evan declined. The next day they were off on their 2 month trip to England and we started our first Australian housesit. The community we were located in was a vibrant one. It was weirdly easy to dive RIGHT in and be a part of things. We joined a Waldorf homeschool co-op. We signed the boys up for circus class and Pepper for ballet. Evan and I and one of the kids I believe got to play soccer and the boys joined scouts! We made really great friends and community connections very quickly. We attended free vegan community lunches, board game meet ups, activities at the library, brought the kids to a couple “blue light discos”/dance parties. There was a toy library so we could check toys out for the kids to play with at the house and museums to check out (and Australia offers generous family discounts at nearly every attraction so families save money going places)! And even with all this going on, our family experienced a deep relief and relaxation compared to the busyness of our lives in Georgia. We found ourselves with time to let the kids bake. Taught the little ones to read. Did puzzles in the middle of the week. Hung the laundry to dry. More time. A rare and precious gift.

Two flights, a crowded taxi and a boat ride later we finally arrived in Vorovoro. Our boat rounded the tip of the long, narrow island. A small band of the happiest kids ran the beautiful, sandy beach that stretched almost the full length of the island, waving us in. We were welcomed into the Vorovoro family with an exceptional warmth by the Mali tribe and visitors alike. Guests of the island included a family of full time travelers from England, young college students and world travelers from Sweden, England, Australia and the US. We participated in ceremonies. We wove mats. We went snorkeling and night fishing. We climbed palm trees and sipped fresh coconut milk. Ate freshly caught fish. We sang. Oh, their singing. And we drank the kava. Of course we did. Even the kids did. If you drank a lot you'd feel relaxed and your lips might tingle. The kids were as happy, dirty and feral as they had ever been. They played freely from the moment they opened their eyes until they crawled back into bed in our family’s beach hut at the end of the day. Sunday we took a boat to the neighboring Mali Island for church. Wading through crystal clear water from the boat to the shore, I visited with the mother of the English family. She asked if we were religious. I told her we were Mormon but were feeling very uncertain in our faith. She said she grew up RLDS! Seriously! She said she figures every religion was essentially talking about the same thing. Different takes on the same basic concepts. I agreed. Reader. Did you know the stars are different on the other side of the world? My son got sick one night. I stepped outside to rinse his linens in the quiet ocean waves gently lapping ashore. I cast a towel wide onto the water and the ocean lit up! It wasn’t jet lag, reader. Green and blue bioluminescence sparkled in ripples through the water and when I lifted the towel off the surface of the ocean, it glowed. I allowed myself to sink back into the soft, warm sand for a moment before hurrying back to my son. Tried to drink it in. The shine of the moon on the water. The stillness. "Sunset Peak" silhouetted against the stars in the night sky. Complete and utter magic.

📍 San Gorgonio Campground • First, camping Zoe is the best, swipe to see! We had such a relaxing week camping in the San Bernardino National Forest. We went hiking, explored all the carnage from last year’s storm and even panned for gold! There’s tons of creeks and the Santa Ana river flows through the area too! This was our first time staying at this campground and it’s easily become one our faves on hwy 38. Only an hour and a half drive from Orange County and 2 hours from LA.
