The lupins are limbering 💜 Holt has a vast 8 acre allotment plot site, the land originally given by Holt Hall to returning servicemen so they could grow to feed their family. Split in two by a trained hazel hedge (there are ‘windows’ where you can view through) the outer plot is set out in a traditional manner with edged beds and a tool shed. Ook is deze stekelloos, alleen helaas wel wat gevoelig voor meeldauw. Van de andere ken ik de naam niet. Op nr 3 Rhodendron Moederkensdag. Om eerlijk te zijn: deze foto is van vorige week, inmiddels is deze bijna uitgebloeid op de dag van de moeders. Veder nog wat vaste planten in de borders waaronder de schitterende donkerblauwe Siberische lis. En 4 typische rotsplantjes die de rotstuin nu kleur geven. Flowers in the Mai Pensato garden on May 12th 2024: Today on Mother's Day, 2 climbing roses at first places of my top 10. Number 1 is Zepherine Drouhin, which smells very sweet and continues to flower reasonably well. It is also spineless, but unfortunately sensitive to mildew. I don't know the name of the other one. On number 3 Rhodendron Moederkensdag (Dutch for Mothers Day). To be honest: this photo is from last week, it has now almost finished blooming. Next to that some perennials from the borders, including the beautiful dark blue Siberian iris. My fave time of the year has finally arrived; the start of the flower festivals, and Malvern was wonderful as usual. I'd never grown a tulip before this year. Partly because my cat Noodle rips their heads off if I put them in a vase 😤😹, and partly because I'm never sure about growing annuals, which is kind of what tulips like this are. I decided to live life on the edge and give them a go. I ordered La Belle epoque from Sarah Raven, planted them in January (because I'm late for everything 😂) and they have not disappointed. They are probably only going to be in flower for a total of three weeks, and they weren't cheap, but I think I saved the best till first. And Noodle hasn't even noticed that they're tulips. Our Wildlife Garden 🥰💚🌱 ‘I’ve made my garden Wildlife friendly so the insects and animals will love it! There’s two little meadows, two ponds, the first one I dug age 6 and made out of a washing up bowl and now it’s teeming with life! We have vegetables, a bee houses, a bug are and a hedgehog house - we hope we one moves in one day!’ 🌸🍃 . ‘We’re in No Mow May now, so don’t forget to let your grass grown and let all those pollonators make the most of the flowers! Feeling very accomplished with the veg garden today. A frame built for squash and got butternut and spaghetti squash growing up that. The final 2 black pumpkins planted out, more French beans in and I love the idea of sowing g the beans as you plant for a second harvest. The only 2 cucumbers that germinates in(just need a frame for them) sweet corn in and some sacraficial nasturtiums planted all around them. 💜 Wisteria Wonder 💜 It's wisteria season, and our courtyard is draped in a cascade of purple blooms! Much to the delight of the 🐝 If you've got some wisteria-envy, our gardening team has put together some helpful tips for the perfect wisteria display: 💜 Patience is key: Wisteria can take several years to flower prolifically. ☀️ Full sun: Plant your wisteria in a spot that gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. ✂️ How to trim wisteria: Timing – prune twice a year, in Jan-Feb and Jul-Aug It is a good time to summer prune new long ‘whippy bits’ back to about 6 buds/leaves. But make sure you do this after flowering. Pruning them back will stop the Wisteria from growing too big and getting tangled in your windows and guttering. It will also allow more space and light to the plant which will encourage healthy new growth. We also trim wisteria in winter; we cut them back to about 2 buds to create flowering spurs. It’s Mother’s Day weekend and that means we can officially plant our summer veggies! There are always exceptions when gardening.. and when it comes to growing tomatoes is one of those exceptions. Gardening and planting is almost always the same…. Don’t plant TOO deep. Here are some tips when planting tomatoes. 🍅When growing tomatoes PLANT THEM DEEP!!! All the little “hairs” on the stem have the potential to become roots! 🍅Be sure and clean stems off the main stem that will go underground. 🍅Know if you are planting determinant vs indeterminate. 🍅“Tease” the rootball before planting (I do this with EVERYTHING I plant, minus an evergreen rootball). 🍅Ditch the flimsy tomatoes cages and go with a gridwall panel (horse panel/hogwire) staked into the ground and use floral tape or reusable ties to train your tomatoes on the panel. I grow mine on these panels bent into 2 giant arches. Trust me! You’ll never have another tipped over tomato cage!
