A slightly random post for a sunny Sunday. I’m gradually shuffling pots around the patio, as I imagine many of us are at the moment, and I just cheerfully shifted a couple of biggish bananas in 38 cm pots. These pots probably hold about 25 litres of compost, in this case peat-free multipurpose. Bananas are very thirsty and hungry plants, so in some some ways it might make more sense to have them in a more loamy compost, which does a better job of holding onto water. But there is no way I’d be moving the pots about so easily if they were full of heavy loam-based compost. The plants grow perfectly well in the multipurpose stuff, but I suspect I may use more water than I would if they were in John Innes, or similar. Does anyone else think about this stuff? 🧅🧅🧅 for all the internet meanies out there who hated on my reel about replanting onions that had sprouted in my pantry- this onion bulb and greens harvest is all from one Vidalia onion from my pantry that had gone bad (I just planted this one whole and didn't separate the individual bulblets). I probably could have left it to grow a little more but I accidentally cut a bulb when I was harvesting the fava beans so decided to pull it out and use it for recipes this week! Gardening is supposed to be fun- experiment and see what happens! I also picked all of my fava/broad beans 🫘 and then pulled the plants to make room for pole beans. The weather is summery, this azalea is super happy, and the non-stone fruit are growing like I’ve never seen. Already eaten many strawberries! Unable to spend much time outside, as I sneeze out there, and sneezing is not allowed. Still visiting the hospital every couple of days, and on antibiotics now. Hoping for the splint to come out this week, and maybe permission to bend over, look down so I can craft, and walk around. This septum op has been so much more limiting and with loads more pain than any of my endo laparoscopies. I am such a lucky bunny, I got an early birthday present! It's a Christow 4 tier growhouse max. My previous (and already preloved before me) green grow house finally gave up last week as one of the top parts rusted through and broke. It lasted me a good 10 years so I have no complaints. This new one has the same footprint but is white, slightly taller and has clips to hold the roll up front (rather than just ties which eventually snapped on my previous one) Plenty of room for tomatoes in this one and there are even holes to put a cane through at the top to attach supports to. 👋🏼 Hi! I haven’t posted for a while because I’ve just been enjoying my time in the garden instead of worrying about sharing. But I’m super proud of my project that’s nearly finished!! 1) this area was an old fruit cage and was covered in creeping buttercup 2) I put a thick black tarpaulin down for a few months to kill off the weeds 3) dug it and levelled it then put down weed membrane 4) got severe buyers remorse when I had to build the @bandq_uk planters we all rushed out to buy 😂 5) bark down and filled half way with compost and courgettes all planted out! #gardenmakeover #gardening #planters #containergardening

I’m approaching the last frost date in my region, so I’m hardening off my tomatoes. Hardening off is important because it helps reduce the shock that an indoor, seed-started plant goes through when they are move outside because they are not accustomed to temperature fluctations and direct sunlight. To harden off a plant, I place it outdoors when the temperatures are most similar to the indoor temps for a few hours. Bearded iris 'Double Exposure' is blooming 🪷. The colours are gorgeous. This is one of the irises I bought at the Arundel Castle plant fair a few weeks ago from @chailey_iris_garden It would have more flowers if I hadn't accidentally knocked the top of the flower spike off 🤦🏽♀️I also managed to knock the top of the flower spike off my 'Midnight Masterpiece' and the 'Oblivion' flower spike withered away. Everyday that the sun shines the garden just gets better at this time of year. I love it! And it’s the first time in 10 years I can say that. It’s all coming to fruition this year. That spade has been there exactly 9 days, since I began trying to dig up the sedge. It seems impossible as I can only get to it from one side and it’s massive 🥴 A friend came round for coffee Saturday morning and I nudged him in the direction of the spade.
