I am such a lucky bunny, I got an early birthday present! It's a Christow 4 tier growhouse max. My previous (and already preloved before me) green grow house finally gave up last week as one of the top parts rusted through and broke. It lasted me a good 10 years so I have no complaints. This new one has the same footprint but is white, slightly taller and has clips to hold the roll up front (rather than just ties which eventually snapped on my previous one) Plenty of room for tomatoes in this one and there are even holes to put a cane through at the top to attach supports to. I’m approaching the last frost date in my region, so I’m hardening off my tomatoes. Hardening off is important because it helps reduce the shock that an indoor, seed-started plant goes through when they are move outside because they are not accustomed to temperature fluctations and direct sunlight. To harden off a plant, I place it outdoors when the temperatures are most similar to the indoor temps for a few hours. I have been immersing myself in nature for many years now, whether mountain running, rock or winter climbing, sailing, swimming, skiing and camping, nature has been my muse and the connection is essential to me . Recently since ‘Lockdown’ it became evident to me that growing plants to eat is going to become an essential skill and one that is so rewarding . Life throws done funny twists and I found myself in a different location than planned, a smaller growing space and a challenge to overcome . For the last 2 springs/summers I have been developing my ‘growing’ space with my master gardener 👨🌾, Winter S, and we’ve been working and learning about how to grow in a limited space, trying to get the most productive area we can . Trying to keep this ‘cost’ minimal (money and general resources), reuse as much as we can whilst growing ourselves organic real food, directly outside our front door, only fertilising with plant food made from our own food waste + Bokashi bran and local animal manure (from the farm we are on at the moment) , only buying seeds and soil to get everything going . This is year 2 and in the ground we have; - cut and grow lettuce 🥬 - strawberries 🍓 - lupin’s and marigolds in a window box - Peas 🫛 and Broad beans 🫘 - cabbage 🥬 from last season (turning to sauerkraut soon - best bacteria produced- 100% local - beetroot, chard and Spinach - herbs 🪴 like Parsley 🌿, Oregano, Chives, Marjoram etc - 2 seedings of Potatoes - fennel - Radish, leeks and spring onions / in our home made greenhouse we have Cucumber 🥒 and Tomatoes 🍅 ready to plant today plus seedlings 🌱 coming on . We recon this summer/autumn we should be able to feed ourselves majorly by growing and picking . Bearded iris 'Double Exposure' is blooming 🪷. The colours are gorgeous. This is one of the irises I bought at the Arundel Castle plant fair a few weeks ago from @chailey_iris_garden It would have more flowers if I hadn't accidentally knocked the top of the flower spike off 🤦🏽♀️I also managed to knock the top of the flower spike off my 'Midnight Masterpiece' and the 'Oblivion' flower spike withered away. Elephant Garlic 🐘🧄 There is a lot of prepping and planting happening down at the allotment at the moment and it’s still early days in the season so not many established plants to get excited about. A rainy day harvest. Our radishes are ON POINT this year and I couldn't be happier! Also, this is our best lettuce, cilantro and oregano too. I think it's all the rain and watering we've been doing... granted we have ALWAYS watered daily, but something is just DIFFERENT this year, maybe it's our epic bokashi/worm farm amendment?! Hey y’all! Well the garlic started separating earlier again this year 🤣🤣. So the garlic has been harvested! Pretty sure they are a hardneck variety which does not grow well in my area based on research lol. However, they did still grow into bulbs and smelled amazing coming out of the soil. I see garlic powder in my future and I’m ok with that! • Now on to my long term plans….in fall I will actually order my garlic instead of using store purchased bulbs. Not b/c store purchased cloves (even non organic) won’t grow just b/c I’d like to know that the variety is softneck. • These bulbs are now in the drying tent. That’s what I am planning to use my smaller greenhouse for (curing and drying). I know my laundry room and children will be happy for that 🤣. I’ll close the sides when rain is headed our way but I think it’ll work.
