Starting at 9 am, we will gather to extend our gratitude and blessings over the Española Healing Foods Oasis as we journey into the coming months of tending, harvesting, and sharing all the garden's gifts. Tewa Women United’s Environmental Health & Justice staff and our garden caretakers will lead attendees in a planting workshop of beans, corn, squash and medicinal herbs in our rainwater-harvesting spiral gardens. The first flower has appeared on our 'Amish Yellow' tomato. This variety produces heavy trusses of large, yellow fruits with very few seeds and dense, soft flesh. How to harvest flower seeds 🌸 As our flowers begin to wither away, you can take this opportunity to collect their seeds to propagate in the springtime. ___ The trick seed harvesting is timing! You will want to wait until the flower head has turned dry and brown before plucking them off their stalks. If you harvest them too soon when the head still has petals and colour, the seeds will be immature and wont be viable. If you wait too long to harvest after the heads have turned brown, they may have already dispersed their seeds. Use your secateurs and cut the stalk below the flower head. Put the heads into a tray or paper bag with a label indicating the variety. Place them in a warm, sheltered area so that they can continue to dry. Once thoroughly dry, separate the seeds from the rest of the flower head (chaff) and place in an air tight container. THE FUTURE IS IN OUR HANDS. Do you like those beuatiful, shiny and sweet tatsoi rosettes in early December? (swipe to see them!) Well, this is how they start, these tiny emerald green globes in my palm are the unripe seeds of overwintered plants left in the polytunnel with the purpose of seed saving (I checked one pod to see if there's any pest damage). Saving seed is a vital part of my garden work, especially since many of my reliable varieties are nearly impossible to purchase, seed companies no longer sell them (they concentrate on the hybrids, more money for them that way...) or only available in small quantitties for a crazy expensive price. Tatsoi (the kind that forms rosettes in winter, so cutting as babyleaf is not the only option ) is one example of these hard to find varieties, but luckily it is quite easy to save seed from, I'm going to grow it from home saved seed for maybe the 4th time this fall. #seedsovereignty #seedsaving #homesavedseed #foodsovereignty #asiangreens #tatsoi #springvibes

In the face of climate change, adapting seed for extreme conditions is crucial to ensure sustainable harvests for farmers and a more secure food future for all. When seeds bred for stable environments meet climate change conditions in farmers’ fields, crop failures follow. No one knows this better than Chris Wooding of @ironwoodorganics (ON) who suffered an 8% wheat yield (80lb/acre) due to flooding in 2017. The grain that survived (hard red spring wheat and Winter Rose Red Fife) now forms the basis of Chris’ Flood Fife which he has selected on only his wettest fields. Our whānau at @papawhakaritorito_trust recently hosted a successful 3 day wānanga @hewhenuarongo - A Soil and Seed Sovereignty Symposium in Auckland across @temahurehure Marae & @kokirimarae which brought together over 300 soil & seed guardians, farmers, local food growers, scientists, activists and storytellers together to celebrate soil & seed sovereignty. Across 3 days, speakers and workshops brought inspiration, strength and hope for a future for everyone, led by Indigenous people. As Emeritus Professor Jane Kelsey from @ngatokiwhakarururanga stated, “staying informed is resistance”. By working together and learning from each other, we can continue the legacy of resistance and change that started with our #tūpuna / ancestors. We had the great honour of hearing the stories and legacies of the #OnediaNation, who had travelled from upstate New York and Wisconsin in North America. Our incredible speakers openly shared their emotionally charged stories of regaining lost corn seeds, re-igniting language and the fight to keep the home fires of their traditions alive. We were humbled by the long, dedicated journey they are on to rebuild their communities, one seed at a time. A key highlight was hearing twice from @vandanashivamovie who travelled from India to deliver her powerful kōrero on seed sovereignty and empowered wahine leadership - amoungst a range of other powerful speakers such as Jessica Hutchings, Donna Kerridge, Annette Sykes, Pounamu Skelton & more. Following a brief meeting with Seed Working Group members yesterday, we have drafted a commendation letter regarding the commendable efforts undertaken by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Tanzania Plant Health and Pesticide Authority (TPHPA). The commendation letter highlights the group's appreciation for the temporary ban on the importation of maize seeds from Malawi and the ban on soybeans and their products. These proactive measures demonstrate a commitment to protecting agrobiodiversity and the interests of Tanzanian farmers. The letter also emphasizes the importance of a robust regulatory framework, urging the Ministry of Agriculture to advocate for amendments to the Seed Act (2003) and encouraging TPHPA to expedite the domestication of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA).
