We were so excited to close out National Volunteer Week with a morning tea celebration over the weekend 🥳 Held in honour of our extraordinary 2024 WA Volunteer Service Award Recipients, we kicked proceedings off with a spot of chair yoga before moving onto the awards presentation and then tucking into some delish morning tea. 😋 As these photos show, the room was full of smiles and laughter - with years (and in many cases, decades) of friendship making for a very special morning. Last Thursday we spent the afternoon celebrating our volunteers and the huge contribution they make at Outlook and throughout our community. We heard from Outlook Australia CEO, Daniel Findley and Head of People and Culture, Nicole Hee before a heartfelt thank you to each of our volunteers from our Community Centre Manager, Alison Ryan. Our Volunteer Coordinator, Julie Walton presented all volunteers with a certificate, a commemorative National Volunteer Week 2024 pen and a personalised poster. The highlight of the afternoon was hearing from one of our incredible volunteers, Ken - who does the very important job of connecting men within our community, about the amazing work that Alison does at Outlook Community Centre and the value that volunteering brings. How lucky are we here at Outlook to have such a passionate, giving, warm and energetic group of volunteers who give so much to our community! FareShare capped off another wonderful National Volunteer Week with joyous volunteer celebrations at our Brisbane and Melbourne facilities. FareShare Brisbane’s circus-themed party had roving clowns, a photo booth, a raffle, plenty of games, and a delicious dinner of Thai curry followed by apple crumble and ice cream. More than 80 people attended, including 29 volunteers who were up for Outstanding Service awards (e.g. 500 hours, 5 years). What a super fun night. Meanwhile, FareShare Melbourne hosted a beautiful evening that celebrated 100 of our loyal volunteers, including those who had achieved 5, 10, and 15-year milestones. Both Ann Hebrard and Julie Gow celebrated mind-boggling 20-year milestones; truly stellar achievements! A big FareShare thank you to every single one of our volunteers. On Tuesday, May 21, mecwacare held our annual volunteer appreciation event at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club! This occasion brought together more than 190 community members to celebrate our amazing volunteers. They enjoyed a delightful morning tea and had the chance to meet and connect with fellow volunteers from across the organisation. One of the highlights of the event was the announcement of the Volunteer of the Year Awards. There were several winners for each of the three categories, which were New Volunteer of the Year, ACVVS Volunteer of the Year, and overall Volunteer of the Year. Service Awards were also presented to volunteers who had dedicated 10, 15, 20, 25 and 40 milestone years of service to mecwacare. They were honoured with beautiful glass trophies, celebrating their long term commitment and dedication. Once again, thank you to all our volunteers, and congratulations to all our award winners. For National Volunteer Week last week, we celebrated our wonderful long serving volunteers who have recently reached the milestones of 20, 25 and even 30 years of volunteering for DBCA and its predecessors. A special morning tea was held to acknowledge their commitment to the conservation and protection of Western Australia’s natural environment. The volunteers were recognised for their significant contributions across 26 different projects, including wildlife rehabilitation, natural area and wildlife conservation, track and trail maintenance, campground hosting the Western Australian Herbarium and Wildflower Society, Bushranger Cadet program and Perth Observatory. Be it those friendly faces you see when picking up your orders, the members who pick up hub orders and have them ready for collection at their home, the packing, setup and pack down volunteers or the volunteers that work behind the scenes on our website, IT systems, ordering and the Board - we couldn’t do it without any of them! Wrapping up NVW2024 is Loveth Oyiboka If you know volunteering in Sligo, you know Loveth! She has been in Sligo for 8 years and is a great ambassador for volunteering in Sligo and within her community in Globe House. She is always promoting volunteering in Sligo and sharing her experience with others to entice them to get involved in volunteering and is our Volunteer Liaison Officer for Globe House. Loveth shared with us why she enjoys volunteering and why she would recommend for anyone who is new to Sligo to get involved in volunteering. This is what she had to say. “Volunteering is a way to help people in Ireland, and I am happy to do it. A lot of people have come to me to testify how volunteering has helped them put a smile on their face. My experience of volunteering is being a part of Sligo Tidy Towns and Sligo Welcome Ambassadors, volunteering in charity shops, fundraising events, volunteering in care homes and festivals and events in the community. It is about mainly giving something to the community and helping others. But it is a great way to help myself, especially to gain work experience and better my CV. I like volunteering because it keeps me active, and it is good for my physical and mental well being. I enjoy the feeling of being needed and being able to do something good for the community. Volunteering allows me to connect with my community and make me a better person in the community. It keeps me in regular contact with others and helps me to develop a different support system which in turn protects me against stress and depression and when I am going through challenging times. Volunteering gives me the opportunity to build new skills that can give me a sense of pride, identity and accomplishment. I believe that my time is the greatest and most precious gift I could ever give. On the final day on National Volunteers Week May 20-26 2024, we say our final goodbyes to the last little faces of orphans raised in care this season, as they left today for their final journey to a release facility. I take this time to honour and thank all our volunteers who have put in so much time and effort in to rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing and running our facility. In the season just passed, October 2023-May 2024, our members have: •Attended to 311 calls for rescue of flying foxes and microbats •Taken in 239 bats for rehabiliation •Released 197 bats so far back in to the wild •Chopped around 400g of fruit per bat, per day for each flying fox in care •Spent hours every day cleaning all facilities on site •Attended rain, hail or shine to complete rehabiliation activities and feeding of bats in care •Maintained a constant supply of mealworms through mealworm farming for microbats coming in to care •Driven thousands of kilometres attending rescues, vet appointments, transport between carers and doing releases As wildlife rescue volunteers, we are on call 24/7 and all of these responsibilties are done for no financial benefit and we do them in our own time, around work and family commitments. As National Volunteer Week comes to a close, let’s shine the spotlight on local legend Lyn Serventy OAM, whose tireless dedication to conservation and the environment has left and continues to leave an indelible mark on the Augusta Margaret River community. 👏 Lyn Serventy OAM Committee Member AMR Clean Community Energy ⭐️ Lyn Serventy BA, ABDB has worked as a teacher, Community Arts Manager and Lecturer in Viticulture. She served 11 years as a Councillor on the Augusta Margaret River Council including a term as Deputy Shire President. Lyn brings a great deal of experience of working with the community of the Augusta Margaret River Shire to establish better ways of doing things both on-the-ground as a pioneer of organic viticulture, and in the planning arena through working at all levels of community, local government and Government to establish soundly-based sustainable planning. 💚 Lyn was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2022 for service to conservation and the environment. The citation for her contribution is too numerous to mention, but Lyn has been active in preserving of Margaret River for over 40 years and in particular ensuring that good planning retains the values she holds dear. Her awards include: Certificate of Appreciation, Shire of Augusta Margaret River, 2020; Long and Loyal Service Award, WA Local Government Association, 2015; Certificate of Recognition, Shire of Augusta Margaret River, 2015; Bessie Rischbieth Conservation Award, Conservation Council of Western Australia, 2009; Churchill Fellowship, 1973. 🎖️ Lyn helped establish AMRCCE, was the foundational Chair from 2017-2020, then Deputy Chair 2020-2024. Johannes Baluyot is a Northern Territory Volunteer, Advanced First Responder, and works as a Patient Transport Officer. He achieves all of this while diligently studying his degree in Paramedicine. With his goal of becoming a paramedic with St John NT, Johannes knew he needed to walk before he could run, so he set about learning what he could. Coming from a non-health background, he wanted to broaden his knowledge of patient care, first aid skills, and the inner workings of an ambulance service. He enrolled himself as a volunteer four years ago and has since progressed to the role of Operational Manager in the Volunteer Leadership Group, and hasn’t looked back. Well-loved by the volunteer cohort, Johannes leads by example with his bright personality and willingness to teach the younger generation of volunteers essential skills. Meet Ash! Ash is another one of Interchange Gippsland’s fantastic volunteers! Before becoming one of our participants beloved volunteers, Ash was a Community Access Worker with Interchange Gippsland for 8 years. When Ash started with Interchange Gippsland, he supported participants on various camps and gradually worked his way into our day service programs. He finished up his role midway through 2023, before coming back to Interchange Gippsland at the beginning of 2024. He must have missed our participants too much to stay away! Ash volunteers most regularly with the Eagles and Snakes band at the Wonthaggi site, assisting in the vocals department. When asked why he volunteers his time with the band, Ash said that he likes to see the “personal growth of all individuals.” Performing live can be a very nerving experience for anyone, yet Ash notices that our participants “thrive while performing, as they can be themselves, with no expectations”. He mentioned that if you can “push people slightly outside their comfort zone consistently, they will do things they couldn't think they could do”. Ash volunteers his time with the band multiple times a week, assisting with rehearsals and attending any gigs they perform. Excitingly, the Eagles and Snakes band just recorded a new album, and it is available on Spotify! Ash was so proud that the band had taken the next step and are now available worldwide! Celebrating National Volunteer Week by celebrating the champions at @melbournerovers 🌈💙❤️ Rovers are Melbourne / Naarm’s LGBTQIA+ and inclusive club, bringing together people from across the rainbow spectrum and beyond to participate in and enjoy football, from beginners to the highly skilled and experienced. All of this comes from the work of the Club’s volunteers. Melbourne Rovers are a Pride Football Australia foundation club, along with Sydney Rangers FC and the Flying Bats FC. They are the current Justin Fashanu Cup champions, and will be looking to take out both the JF Cup and Julie Murray Cup in 2024 up in Sydney / Wangal. 2024 VOLUNTEERS WEEK 🙋🙋♀️🙋♂️ On Thursday 23 May we celebrated the work of our volunteers who make such an impact to the lives of students at the College. Some of our volunteers have young families of their own, others are retired, some are parents of students, others are members of the Holy Trinity Church, some are friends who walk their dogs with staff members. Despite their different experiences and backgrounds, all of our volunteers share a common belief in the importance of helping others, and somehow find the time to make a difference. Our volunteers support our students and families in many ways, including: • running breakfast clubs and the second-hand uniform shop • mentoring young people • organising the annual Campbell Fair • providing opportunities for children to give mother’s and father’s day gifts • cooking barbecues on Sports Days and other school events • helping out in our library • assisting with students’ Rotary EarlyAct and InterAct projects • reading to young students • serving on Governing Council • managing and coaching sporting teams. We were fortunate to be able to thank the Hon. We couldn’t finish National Volunteer Week 2024 without thanking our longest running volunteer Anne who has volunteered at Burwood Public School for 24 YEARS! She started as a classroom helper before assisting in the library and canteen and finally managing our uniform shop until she recently retired. She was nominated for Burwood Council’s Volunteer Recognition Award and although she didn’t win her category, she’ll always be a winner to us.
