Master Trooper Dean A. Goodheart End of Watch: September 6, 1995 On September 6, 1995, at about 6:30 a.m., Master Trooper Goodheart was performing a roadside inspection of a semi-truck on westbound Interstate 70 near Colby. As he conducted a walk-around safety inspection of the truck, a westbound car driven by an 18-year-old college student struck him. Goodheart's injuries were immediately fatal. Master Trooper Goodheart was 49 years old at the time of his death and served the citizens of Kansas for more than 23 years. He was survived by his wife, Marilyn, and three grown children. During the 2000 Legislative Session, the Kansas State Troopers Association, and the Kansas Highway Patrol jointly supported House Bill 2641 to require drivers on interstates and other multi-lane highways to slow down and move over near stopped emergency vehicles. House Bill 2641, known by many as the "Goodheart Law," was signed by Governor Bill Graves on May 16, 2000. Goodheart's Law was amended in 2006 to incorporate roadside crews, such as the Patrol's Motorist Assistance Technicians and the Kansas Department of Transportation's highway road crews. Today the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office remembers one of our own, Deputy Jack Dean Werner, who was shot and killed 47 years ago on May 17, 1977, while protecting and serving #OlmstedCounty. Deputy Werner was shot and killed when he attempted to stop a suspect who was driving wildly in a deserted mall parking lot in Rochester. The suspect opened fire on Deputy Werner with a shotgun, striking him in the chest. He then fled in Deputy Werner's patrol car but was apprehended four hours later. The suspect was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison on September 21st, 1977. Deputy Werner had served with the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office for five years. He was survived by his wife and two daughters. Master Trooper Larry L. Huff End of Watch: November 26, 1993 On November 3, 1993, at about 9:15 p.m., Master Trooper Huff was patrolling southbound on U.S. Highway 81, south of Concordia. He observed a speeder traveling northbound on U.S. 81 and began to make a U-turn to stop the violator. As Huff made the U-turn, a semi-truck following him struck his patrol car. The collision seriously injured Huff, who was pinned in his vehicle for 45 minutes and was extricated using the Jaws of Life. He was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital in Concordia and succumbed to his injuries on November 26, 1993. Master Trooper Huff served the citizens of Kansas for more than 23 years. He was survived by his wife and six children. Today, we encourage you to think of Master Trooper Larry L. Huff, his family, and friends who were left behind. HONORING OFFICER ASHLEY M. GUINDON: End of Watch: February 27, 2016 This year marked the 8th-year anniversary of fallen Prince William County Police Officer, Ashley Guindon. She was one of three officers who responded to a home in Woodbridge for a reported domestic altercation. Unbeknownst to the officers, the suspect had already killed his wife inside the residence. Upon contacting the suspect at the front door, he suddenly and without warning, pulled out a firearm and opened fire, striking all three officers. Additional responding officers took the suspect into custody without further incident and immediately rendered aid to the wounded officers. All three officers were taken to an area hospital where Officer Guindon died because of her injuries. The other two officer were critically wounded. Officer Guindon was sworn-in the day prior on February 26, 2016. This incident was the first call Officer Guindon responded to that evening. Officer Guindon was destined to wear the badge, but her service to her community began long before her days as a police officer. She assisted the Marine Corps Mortuary Affairs Office while serving in the Reserves, worked as a pre-hire with #PWCPD Special Victim's Unit, and volunteered extensively with the Suicide Prevention Program. Ashley Guindon was the only daughter of Sharon Nowack Guindon and the late David Guindon. You sacrificed your life protecting our community and your courage and service will never be forgotten. I think there is a huge stigma around serving Christ, whether in full time ministry or even as a church lay person! The stigma is that if I choose Christ, then I am meant to suffer!! If I choose Christ I won’t have ________!! I won’t get to do _______!! And in turn we are producing generations that are “me-centric” and are keeping Christ as a “good luck charm”!! Paul said that he would give all he had to win Christ!! Many would look at Paul or other martyrs as wasted lives and fruitless living!! But this verse in Psalms is 🤯. David says, “I have been young and am now old”…… I’ve lived a long long life!! “Yet have in it seen the righteous forsaken, not his seed begging bread!” When we choose Christ, He cares for the needs that we have!! Whenever I am plagued with thoughts like “why hasn’t it happened yet?” and “has God forgotten about me?” my mom reminds me that nothing happens before the time. Anxiety can often take root when we doubt that God will do what He said He would do just because it hasn’t happened in the time frame we expected. Remember that the enemy tries to plant seeds of doubt to attack your faith. Don’t let him win. Having faith in Jesus means yielding to Him and trusting in His timing. He has ordained things from beginning to end. Even as God formed the earth He didn’t fill it with living creatures before there was vegetation for them to eat. Everything has a proper order, and you never know what God may be protecting you from in the perceived “delay” that is happening. He could be trying to increase your faith or He could be trying to protect you from something you may not be ready for. In times of doubt remember Romans 12:2. “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Cherishing a cherished memory from almost 25 years ago at the Botanical Gardens with my sister and late father. Life felt simpler then. Today marks 13 years since he left us suddenly on May 17, 2011—a day that darkened my world. Despite our fair share of disagreements, I know he always wanted the best for us. #OTD 16th - 17th MAY 1943 Operation Chastise was launched overnight, known as the Dambusters Raid the Ruhr Dams in Germany were attacked by 617 Squadron, Royal Air Force. The Mohne and Edersee dams were breached, causing the Ruhr valley to flood, the Sorpe Dam was only slightly damaged. Two hydroelectric power stations were destroyed, several were damaged. A number of factories and mines were also destroyed. The bouncing bombs were designed specifically for the Operation by Barnes Wallis. 133 AirCrew were involved in the raid. Sadly 53 lost their lives, and 3 became POWs. Of the 80 men who survived the raid a further 32 were killed during the course of the war. Just 48 survived, the last Dambuster, George “Johnny” Johnson passed away on the 7th December 2022. Schaefer Jr. Died May 16, 2009 Serving During Operation Iraqi Freedom 27, of Belleville, Ill.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 172nd Infantry Brigade, Schweinfurt, Germany; died May 16 in Baghdad of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit. ‘He was born to serve his country’ The Associated Press David A. Schaefer Jr.’s aunt and uncle, Karen and Danny Schaefer, said their nephew visited them before he enlisted, and his excitement about joining the military was tangible. “Like all young men, he got himself all ripped up and excited about going into the Army,” Karen Schaefer said. “I answered the door and didn’t recognize him. He said, ‘Aunt Karen, it’s Little Davey!’ and I gave him a big ol’ hug. He did good for himself.” Schaefer, 27, of Belleville, Ill., died May 16 in Baghdad when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit. He was assigned to Schweinfurt, Germany. “He was born to serve his country,” said his wife, Shelly. “He wanted to be a soldier — that’s all he talked about when he was younger — and that’s what he did.” After getting his GED, he worked as a diesel mechanic. “There was never a challenge David wouldn’t take on, and he always took the heavy end of the load. He was a soldier’s soldier, and he will be missed,” Maj. Gen. William Enyart said.
