🫢 Illustration: @paul.s.grabowski Produktion: @kugelundniere #darwingefälltdas #darwingefaelltdas #dgd #podcast #germanpodcast #geschichtspodcast #menschheitsgeschichte #darwinis #absurd #funny #fail #epicfail #history #historypodcast #comedy #comedypodcast #wissenschaft

📅 13 May 1861: A significant milestone in the history of transportation was achieved on this day. Pakistan, then a part of British India, saw the inauguration of its first railway line. The line stretched from Karachi, a bustling port city, to Kotri, a town located on the west bank of the Indus River. This marked the beginning of a new era, transforming the way people and goods moved across the region. It played a crucial role in the economic and social development of the area, bringing about profound changes in the lives of the people. The railway line served as a vital link, connecting different parts of the region and fostering trade and communication. It's a testament to human ingenuity and the relentless pursuit of progress. This is GERTRUDE EDERLE - In 1926, she etched her name into the annals of sporting history, captivating the world as the first woman to conquer the formidable challenge of swimming across the English Channel. Born in 1905, Ederle’s affinity for swimming emerged early in life, a passion that persisted despite the warnings of doctors who cautioned against exacerbating her hearing impairment, a result of a childhood bout with measles. Ederle’s swimming prowess had already earned her acclaim at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris, where she clinched a gold medal in the 400-meter freestyle relay and secured two bronze medals in the 100 and 400 freestyle events. On August 6, 1926, clad in sheep grease to mitigate chafing, Ederle plunged into the turbulent waters of the English Channel, braving rough seas on her historic journey. Typically a 21-mile endeavor under calm conditions, the Channel presented a more formidable challenge that day, requiring Ederle to traverse at least 35 miles. Undeterred, she forged ahead, completing the arduous crossing in a staggering 14 hours and 31 minutes, setting a world record that surpassed the feats of her male predecessors by at least two hours. Ederle’s triumphant achievement catapulted her to instant stardom, garnering ticker-tape parades, floods of fan mail, and a flurry of marriage proposals. Embracing her newfound celebrity, she embarked on a tour with a vaudeville act and even starred in a short film depicting her remarkable life. Yet, beneath the glitz and glamour, Ederle grappled with the toll of fame, experiencing a nervous breakdown in the aftermath of her Channel swim. Compounding her challenges, Ederle’s hearing continued to deteriorate, exacerbated by her grueling aquatic feat. Despite her own struggles, she found solace in teaching swimming at the Lexington School for the Deaf, employing physical demonstrations to communicate with her students, even though she never learned sign language herself. #podcast #feminist #womensrights #podcastshow #womenpodcasters #feministpodcast #spotifypodcast #womenshistory #historypodcast #femaleathletes #athletics #competitivesports #wagegap #pearlmoore #

In case you missed it, our latest episode is about not one, not two, not even three shocking capital punishments, but about multiple generations of gurus who were prosecuted for their beliefs. Sikhism is the 5th largest religion in world and was founded in India in the late 15th century. It emphasizes the worship of one God, equality of all people, selfless service, and devotion to the teachings of the Sikh Gurus.

While these Gurus had a mission to live peaceful lives, they couldn’t avoid a pattern of violence and death throughout their generations. 📅 11 May 1912: Saadat Hasan Manto, an Indian-Pakistani author and screenwriter, was born on this day. Manto was a leading figure in Urdu literature, with his work spanning across various genres including drama, nonfiction, satire, screenplays, and personal correspondence. Born in Samrala, Punjab, British India (now in India), Manto was active in British India and later, after the 1947 partition of India, in Pakistan. He is best known for his stories about the partition of India, which he opposed. Manto's life, much like the fiction he wrote, was not only interesting but also brief. He lived only up to 42 years, 8 months, and 4 days. Despite his short life, Manto left a significant impact on Urdu literature, producing 22 collections of short stories, a novel, five series of radio plays, three collections of essays, and two collections of personal sketches. Manto passed away in 1955. His legacy continues to inspire and influence writers and critics alike. His life and work have been the subject of two biographical films. 📅 11 May 2013: Pakistani General Election Background: The general elections were held in Pakistan on this day to elect the members of the 14th National Assembly and the four Provincial Assemblies. The three major parties were the Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N) led by Nawaz Sharif, the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) led by President Asif Ali Zardari and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led by Imran Khan. The result was a hung parliament, with the PML-N receiving the most votes and winning the most seats, but falling six seats short of a majority. However, following the elections, 19 independent MPs joined the PML-N, allowing it to form a government alone with Nawaz Sharif as new Prime Minister. This marked the first civilian transfer of power following the successful completion of a five-year term by a democratically elected government. 🇵🇰 📷 #Pakistan #History #OnThisDay #PakistanPolitics #PakistanHistory #Politics #Cricket #PakistanCricketTeam #Sports #ThisDayInHistory #pakistan_pics #historyfacts #historylovers #cricketupdates #pakistandiaries #historypodcast #PakistanCricketBoard #pakistanart #historyclass

In their second innings, despite a 180-run deficit, Kevin O'Brien batted for nearly six hours to become Ireland's first Test centurion. Ireland set a target of 160 for Pakistan and took five wickets before Imam-ul-Haq guided Pakistan to victory. Mohammad Abbas, the seamer, took nine wickets in the match. 🇵🇰 📷 #Pakistan #History #OnThisDay #PakistanPolitics #PakistanHistory #Politics #Cricket #PakistanCricketTeam #Sports #ThisDayInHistory #pakistan_pics #historyfacts #historylovers #cricketupdates #pakistandiaries #historypodcast #PakistanCricketBoard #pakistanart #historyclass

Roughly ten years ago, when the #hungryherstorian and myself were preparing for our upcoming nuptials, we went out for breakfast with my groomsmen ahead of our tux fitting. While most of us opted for the usual combination of animal products, she opted for a dish that I had never heard of -Shakshuka. A decade later, and not only is it a staple of each and every one of her girls getaway weekends, but it was alao the featured recipe on my 20th episode that looked at 50th anniversary of the massacre at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Available now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and wherever you may listen. We'll keep the Thunderbolt theme rolling here with P-47s of the 78th Fighter Group in color. The 78th FG flew its P-47s in combat from April 1943 through December 1944. Beginning in April 1944, they began painting their distinctive black and white checkers on the nose of their aircraft. This carried over to their P-51s when the group converted to Mustangs in late December 1944. #wwii #ww2 #thecoldblue #Thunderbolt #p47thunderbolt #worldwar2 #worldwarII #militaryhistory #historypodcast #history #aviation #aviationhistory #8thairforce #duxford #England #airforce #flying #secondworldwar #planes #aircraft

📅 10 May 2021: Abid Ali scored his first Test double-century, and Nauman Ali contributed 97 runs from the ninth position, setting a high score for Pakistan that Zimbabwe couldn't match in Harare. Nauman, a left-arm spinner, took five wickets for 86 runs in the second innings. Shaheen Afridi, a left-arm fast bowler, also took five wickets, marking the first time in over a century that two left-arm bowlers achieved five-wicket hauls in the same Test innings. The victory margin of an innings and 147 runs was Pakistan's second-largest outside the subcontinent. The 169-run partnership between Abid and Nauman was the team's second-highest for the eighth wicket. Pakistan won the series 2-0, having also won the first Test by an innings. 🇵🇰 📷 #Pakistan #History #OnThisDay #PakistanPolitics #PakistanHistory #Politics #Cricket #PakistanCricketTeam #Sports #ThisDayInHistory #pakistan_pics #historyfacts #historylovers #cricketupdates #pakistandiaries #historypodcast #PakistanCricketBoard #pakistanart #historyclass

British Embassy Encampment by Persians for Government Reform, July 1906 --- After Shah ordered his troops to shoot at the protestors demanding change, people decided to take shelter in a place that was off-limits to the monarchy forces. One of Iran's notable Shia clergies wrote a letter to the British ambassador requesting that the people be allowed to use the embassy as a sanctuary for their strikes and protests. The next day, over 50 people came to the embassy and sat there in protest, the day after, even more people showed and each day the number of protestors increased substantially. Soon a community was shaped within the walls of the embassy with numbers reaching above 14 thousand. They would hold talks and discussions about the European political systems, learn about the constitutional governments across the world and discuss how Persia could benefit from having its own parliament, overseeing the orders of the Shah, and keeping him in check. In the 2nd episode of The Lion and the Sun, we tell the story of the encampment at the British embassy and how it led to Iran's biggest societal change.
