I should have included this table in yesterday’s post, but I forgot! I found this great little Eastlake table at a garage sale last weekend, didn’t get it and had regrets almost immediately. So later on in the day, after the garage sale hours were over, I messaged the seller and asked if it had sold. It was still there! I negotiated the price down a bit, and my husband and I drove back out to the garage sale location to get it. We’ve really fallen in love with Eastlake furniture over the past year, and have a hard time passing any pieces up, especially for a decent price. (Never mind the fact that we live in a very small house and really don’t have room for all the furniture we find!) Polaire (born Émilie Marie Bouchaud) was a French stage performer, generally known for her eccentric stage presence and striking appearance. Her career stretched from the early 1890s to the mid-1930s and encompassed the range from music-hall singer to stage and film actress. Her most successful period professionally was from the mid-1890s to the beginning of the First World War. The circumference of her waist reportedly measured between 14-16 inches without a corset, she sported bobbed hair years before it came into fashion, and she wore short skirts, tiny corsets, and a nose ring. During her 1910 tour to America, she billed herself as “the ugliest woman in the world,” to advance further publicity. Polaire also briefly performed in London. . . “When I first tried to go onto the stage no one would have me: I was too homely. I almost committed suicide with disappointment. But suddenly I say, ‘Well if I can’t be pretty, I shall be ugly.’ At least I have the verve and chic! (Oh fine!) So I made myself as homely as I could. My shoes make my feet look even larger. My scrawny waist I draw in even tighter; my large hands I show as much as possible. I paint my mouth even larger than it is; my eyes I try to make appear farther apart than they are. And so I have succeeded. From the first I began to make my fortune, I thought my audience would make fun of me and take me in sport. Instead, they take me so seriously and watch my every move. I know I can dance well, even if I am ugly, and it is the contrast between grace and ugliness that fascinates the audience. Since I resolved to be ugly, I have not had one unhappy moment. Admirers! Mock turtle soup anyone? I have a stack of fascinating early Victorian cookery and household management books I'll be adding in the next day or so. Including from 174 years ago in 1850, Eliza Acton's Modern Cookery, which was the forerunner to Mrs Beeton. In fact, the latter pinched a couple of Acton's recipes. Acton's is regarded as a cookery classic. There's a Domestic Economy book I could get lost in for hours. If you want to know what was involved in running a large Victorian Household, this one has it all. I've another by one of my personal heroes Agnes B Marshall, who came from obscurity to set up a world-renowned cookery school and pioneer freezing food whilst inventing the ice cream cone. If you get 5 minutes her biography is worth a Google. I also currently have a scarce 1st edition of Fantastic Ices by her in stock too. But here’s something I’ve learned as a reader: none of the stories in the huge canon of retellings and fanfic take away from the originals. Quite the opposite. In most instances, the retellings are borne of a deep and abiding love for the source material. That’s certainly true in my case. » (Mimi Matthews, Author's note to John Eyre) ~ In this retelling of "Jane Eyre" (C. Brontë), the main character is hired as a tutor for two young boys who are taking refuge in silence. A few years before and far away from England, Bertha Mason reports in her journal her encounter with Mr. Rochester. ~ I enjoyed this retelling because it is faithful both by the plot and by the atmosphere. Besides gender twisting, it shows an interesting reading of Jane Eyre in extending the supernatural dimension. 1) The retelling follows well the original plot of Jane Eyre. Indeed in both novels a young person goes to Thornfield as a teacher and is progressively attracted by their employer. It also abides by the personality of the original characters, for instance Rochester is still a person with a heavy weight on their shoulders. Likewise, the dark and odd atmosphere is used once more : Thornfield is still a gloomy castle with a lot of mystery. 2) The obvious difference with Jane Eyre is that the female characters are now male and vice versa, with some exceptions. Even if it impacts their way of speaking and their relationship with the other characters, their main traits are unchanged. This gender twisting is however not the biggest change 3) The most striking innovation is the supernatural dimension. For instance, the mist surrounding Thornfield is given almost magical attributes and is actually the leitmotiv of the story. Supernatural elements where already suggested by C. Brontë as M. Matthews wisely notes in the postscript. I think it was the best approach to retell this book without deriving from the original work. I heard a lot of good things concerning Mimmi Matthews and I am happy to have read her in the end. A favorite all in all! ~ Have a nice week!
