I’ve long been a fan of Miller’s books about the monarchy and this one is no exception. It’s a straightforward assessment of Queen Victoria’s life, emphasizing her years as a widow. Miller does a good job of demonstrating the queen’s quirks and personality as she tangled and toiled with her nine children and passel,of grandchildren. This book is a great start for anyone who has yet to be introduced to Victoria and her progeny because it offers a list of all the main characters and a host of pictures to associate with the names. It’s an excellent beginning point to deep dive into the wondrous world of the House of Windsor’s ancestry. Shirinbai Ardeshir by the Austrian orientalist painter Rudolf Swoboda (The Younger). Swoboda painted this portrait of a teenaged Parsi Zoroastrian girl from India somewhere in the 19th century. Queen Victoria the Empress of India was fascinated by her Indian empire but she never set foot here. She instead paid for Swoboda to go all the way to India and paint portraits of her Indian subjects. Swoboda ended up creating numerous portraits of Indian people. Royal wardrobe - A velvet dress in imitation of tartan which was worn by a teenage Princess Alexandrina Victoria. This dress dates between 1835 to 1837 and has often been suggested as the dress she wore to receive her cousins Prince Albert and Prince Ernest as they arrived in England in 1836, perhaps this could be why it has been preserved so perfectly. The silk velvet of this dress is cleverly woven to imitate tartan, although it does not replicate a recognisable Scottish clan tartan. Vertical stripes of black, blue, green and red are countered by narrow horizontal satin-weave stripes of red, blue and green to produce a checked ground, whilst bold overchecking in narrow white satin stripes completes the impression of a tartan fabric. Such velvets were particularly fashionable in the years 1825-40, both in England and France. Samples of at least two further ‘tartan’ dresses almost certainly made for Princess Victoria between 1836 and 1838 are preserved in the books of dress cuttings associated with the dressmaker Mary Bettans.

The Presentation of Crimean Medals by Queen Victoria, 18 May 1855 The presentation took place in the morning on Horse Guards Parade. The Queen presented medals to officers and soldiers from every regiment engaged in the campaign, and to naval personnel. The Times newspaper described them as ‘the gallant fellows who have done their part in sustaining the honour of our country, and poured out their blood like water in its defence’. The Queen and Prince Albert stood on a dais, the Queen in a lilac silk dress, green shawl and white bonnet. Members of the Royal Family watched from a balcony overlooking the parade ground. Many of the officers in the foreground are wearing the new medal. The Queen was very moved by the occasion which she noted ‘united high & low & brought all equally together as heroes … the 1st time that a simple Private has touched the hand of his Sovereign’. She was particularly affected by three men who were so severely wounded that they had to be wheeled past her. It was said that George Housman Thomas claimed that ‘his great purpose was to represent every portion of his subject faithfully, and that his work in after years would be valueless if not perfectly true’. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1858.

There are some truly exceptional things to see at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. The original Osborne House was bought by Queen Victoria in May 1845 using money from the privy purse, for just under £28,000. Thomas Cubitt, builder and developer of such areas of London as Bloomsbury, Pimlico and Belgravia, was then commissioned to build the house we see today, having demolished the previous building. English Heritage now manage the building and the artefacts within and there is a good day’s activity viewing the house, the gardens, the Swiss Cottage, Osborne beach and the Ice House. Whilst the picture collection is well served with helpful labels (fabulous Indian gallery and Durbar room), large swathes of classical bronzes, cabinets of artefacts, glass and porcelain are unlabelled and rely on room guides for explanation. Great fun for the enthusiastic cataloguer in me! The best labelling on the whole site, however, is in the Swiss Cottage Museum, planned by Prince Albert but built in 1862 after his death. Sir Guy Laking, (keeper of the king’s armoury and curator of the Museum of London) was a ‘cataloguer par excellence’ and reordered the museum in 1916. His gold labels remain and are almost more interesting than the artefacts described. I was transfixed by these small labels and their big stories! 📍The Dining Room, Osborne House, Isle of Wight. 👑 (📷 Another photo from my recent visit to Osborne House.) @englishheritage 🖼 The painting featured is 'The Royal Family in 1846', by German painter Franz Xaver Winterhalter, a favourite court painter of the Royal couple. Whilst this is a copy, the original painting was sent to Buckingham Palace, where it remains today. The Queen is captured as sovereign, mother & wife with her husband Prince Albert (notice the subtle touching of Victoria's hand❤️) & 5 of their children. (V&A had 5 children within 6 years of marriage & there were still another 4 children to come at this point!) The emerald & diamond diadem Victoria is wearing was a present from Albert which he designed himself in 1845. (I truly admire him for his creative flair!) 👑 The stunning diadem can still be viewed today, along with other jewels Victora received from Albert, in the Jewel Room at Kensington Palace. 💎 It was on this day in 1836 that Victoria & Albert met for the first time, at Kensington Palace. In photo 3, you can see a copy of Victoria's journal in which she recorded her first impressions of the man that would later become her beloved husband & 'Angel', as she often referred to him. 🪶 The copy of the journal is placed at the top of the very staircase that the young Victoria walked down on this day to greet Albert on his arrival from Coburg, Germany. 🤍

Known for their extreme love, fiery arguments and tragic demise, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert are one of history’s most iconic couples. At half past two in the afternoon on 18th May 1836, Princess Alexandrina Victoria ‘went down into the Hall’ at Kensington Palace, where she met Ernest & Albert for the first time. Upon greeting her two cousins, the isolated Princess was immediately stunned by the two dashing young men that stood before her. In her journal she wrote that Albert is ‘extremely handsome; his hair is about the same colour as mine; his eyes are large & blue, & he has a beautiful nose, & a very sweet mouth with fine teeth but the charm of his countenance is his expression, which is most delightful; c’est a la fois, full of goodness & sweetness, & very clever & intelligent.’ Throughout their visit, the two brothers feature heavily in the young Princess’s journal. She often writes of going for walks and playing the piano with Albert in particular. However, following the Princes departure on 10th June, Victoria made it clear in a letter that she still saw her ‘dear Albert’ as nothing more than a friend and cousin. A year after their initial meeting, Victoria’s life changed forever when she succeeded her uncle, King William IV, as Queen of Great Britain and Ireland. While Albert had extremely limited experience with reigning a nation, Victoria often turned to him for advice. It was during this time that her opinion of him changed and she began seeing him as a potential suitor. In October 1839 the brothers returned to England. Within a couple of days, the Queens feelings towards the prospect of marriage had ‘a good deal changed’ thanks to Albert’s presence. At half past twelve on the 15th October, Queen Victoria experienced the ‘happiest brightest moment’ in her life when she sent for Albert to meet her alone in her Closet. After a few minutes she told him that it would ‘make me too happy if he would to consent to what I wished (to marry me)’. On the 18th May 1855, Queen Victoria presented the first Crimean War medals to officers and soldiers from every regiment engaged in the campaign (including Naval personnel) The Queen handed out 768 medals that day. This was the first campaign medal to be awarded whilst the country was still at war. The Queen was very moved by the occasion which she noted ‘united high & low & brought all equally together as heroes … the 1st time that a simple Private has touched the hand of his Sovereign’. She was particularly affected by three men who were so severely wounded that they had to be wheeled past her. It was said that George Housman Thomas claimed that ‘his great purpose was to represent every portion of his subject faithfully, and that his work in after years would be valueless if not perfectly true’. Queen Victoria’s Journal: “This has been a great day, one of those which can never be forgotten, one which invited high & low & brought all equally together as heroes, whom I shall ever remember with the most enthusiastic admiration! — The morning was thick & foggy, yet warm. Already at breakfast many people were seen hurrying through the Green Park, here & there Officers, & Officer’s horses, betokening that something of importance was going on. I myself felt all the agitation, all the peculiar sensations only a great event occasions. — At ½ p. 10 started with Feodore, our girls, & dear little Arthur, the latter in the greatest state of excitement as to all he was going to see & do, & ¼ of an hour later we started with Ernest C. & our 2 Boys, Ernest L., the Dss of Sutherland, Fanny Gainsborough, the Equerries & Ld Alfred Paget, all the gentlemen being in full uniform. We proceeded by the Mall, & Pall Mall to the Horse Guards, driving through the arch, & in the midst of a Royal Salute, getting out & taking our places on a platform. The sight here was magnificent & overpowering. Immediately after the Royal Salute, both lines of troops formed 4 deep, the rear line consisting of Non Commissioned Officers & men, drawn up according to the precedence of their respective Corps.” Continues in the comments…

۲۰۵ سال پيش ويكتوريا ملكه بريتانيا در لندن زاده شد. كشور انگليس در پايان فرمانروايی او سرزمينهای گستردهای در جهان را تحت سلطه داشت. مادر ويكتوريا Victoria آلمانی و از شاهزادگان سرزمين هانوفر بود. هشتماهه بود كه پدرش، شاهزاده منطقه كِنت انگليس، را از دست داد. از آنجا كه عملا بريتانيا در آن زمان وليعهدی نداشت كه سلطنت را به او واگذارند، ويكتوريا را از ۱۱ سالگی برای اين مقام در نظر گرفتند هرچند او را برای اين كار آموزش ندادند. به اين خاطر او همواره در خاطراتش خود را در كودكی وامدار عمويش لئوپولد پادشاه بلژيک و بعدها مديون رايزنیهای كارشناسانه با همسرش آلبِرت و نخستوزيرش لرد ویلیام مِلبورن میدانست به ويژه كه پيوسته با مادرش اختلاف و به لرد ملبورن كه هوادار حزب مترقی ليبرالها بود، حس دختری داشت. ۱۸ ساله بود كه به پادشاهی رسيد ولی سازگار با سلطنت مشروطه تنها غير مستقيم در سياست دخالت میكرد. میگفت: “من شيفته صلح و آرامشام و از سياست و غوغا بيزارم. اگر ما زنان خوبی باشيم، حكومت را كه كاری است مردانه به آنان وامیگذاريم”. اما ۳۷ ساله بود كه مستقيما به پشتيبانی ارتش در جنگ كريمه برخاست كه در آن انگليسیها در جبهه عثمانی با روسيه میجنگيدند. ۴۲ ساله بود كه همسر و مشاور توانمندش را از دست داد و تا پايان عمر سياه پوشيد و هربار از سياستمداری خرسند نبود تهديد به كنارهگيری میكرد. ويكتوريا در درازنای سلطنت ۶۴ سالهاش ۱۰ نخستوزير توانمند داشت كه نقش اصلی را در اداره كشور و امپراتوری داشتند و روزگار او را تنها به عنوان نماينده اسمی عصر شكوفايی و قدرت بريتانيا “عصر ويكتوريايی” میناميدند كه مظهر ثبات در جهان متغير، شكوفايی اقتصادی و علمی و تلاش فردی برای زندگی بهتر عنوان میكردند. ويكتوريا پادشاهی خودمدار بود و تنها به لطف پايداری مجلس و مشاورت نخستوزيرانش قانونهای دموكراتيک را توشيح میكرد. ۵۷ ساله بود كه به مقام امپراتوری هند نيز رسيد و از آن زمان بود كه تا اندازهای گوشهگيری را كنار گذاشت و باز در سياست دخالت كرد. ويكتوريا در ۸۱ سالگی در حومه لندن درگذشت. #ویکتوریا #ملکه_ویکتوریا #ملکه #بریتانیا #پادشاهی #پادشاه #سلطنت #شاهدخت #شاه #انگلستان #queenvictoria #victoria #اسکندر_آبادی
