Coronation of the Last Tsar of Russia: The coronation of the last Tsar of Russia and his wife the Empress of Russia took place on the 26th of May 1896 in the Dormition Cathedral in the Moscow Kremlin. On the day of the Coronation, in all the churches in St. Petersburg, the liturgy was read and prayers of thanksgiving were recited the metropolitan cathedrals could not accommodate all the worshippers. The coronation began at 10:00 in the morning. The Emperor, his wife and his mother were all seated on thrones which were placed on special raised platforms which had been installed in the middle of the cathedral. Nikolai II was seated on the throne of Tsar Mikhail Feodorovich, the Dowager Empress Mariya Fyodorovna was seated upon the throne of Tsar Aleksey Mikhailovich Tishayshy, and finally Empress Aleksandra Fyodorovna was seated on the throne of Grand Prince Ivan III of Russia. The ceremony had been presided over by Metropolitan Palladium, of St. Petersburg, the preeminent member of the Holy Synod (the Synod had been transferred at the time of the coronation to Moscow). During the liturgy, the metropolitan con-celebrated with the metropolitans of Kiev, Ioanikiy (Rudnev), and of Moscow (Lyapidevsky). At the end of the liturgy the emperor and empress were anointed and then took communion of the Holy Mysteries at the altar. ⚜️When @danaschwartzzz mentioned this biography on @noblebloodtales , I had no idea the journey upon which I was about to embark. This book has been out of print for decades and, after a thorough Google search, I found a copy in a bookstore called The Wise Owl in Nebraska. If anyone knows the owner, please give them my sincerest thanks. . Olga Alexandrovna, sister to Tsar Nicholas II, was truly the last Grand Duchess, living until 1960. Shortly before her death, she decided to write down her memoirs, with the thoughtful hand of Mr. Vorres. What resulted is this book. Olga's memories are thoughtfully and helpfully interspersed with Vorres' biographical elements, putting Olga's memories into context for the reader. And what a treat for the reader! Olga and Vorres take us through her childhood and early adulthood in Imperial Russia, through an unhappy marriage to the bloodiest period in Russian history and her escape from the Blesheviks. . What sets this book apart from other biographies of those doomed Romanovs is Olga actively participated in the narrative. The facts and stories are from her own memory, and her own thoughts and memories flow through each page. Life in Sweden became very uncomfortable for the Royal Family as this letter from Crown Princess Margareta to Queen Mary of England dated 22nd of May 1917 illustrates; for context, Queen Victoria of Sweden was born Princess Victoria of Baden and the first cousin of Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany and she always remained loyal to her homeland despite Sweden’s decision to remain neutral during the war; Victoria’s loyalties made many of her subjects suspicious. Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna and Queen Sophie of the Hellens were also viewed suspiciously due to their German heritage which in Sophie’s case is ridiculous, Sophie despised her brother, Kaiser Wilhelm, and he was always jealous of the love she received from their mother. In my personal opinion, Sophie would never have dreamed of committing treason to help her brother or her homeland. As for the Tsarina, she spent so much time in England as a child that she viewed herself as British. ‘A good deal of unrest in the country, partly owing to the shortage of food & partly due to the Russian revolution. The Socialist party mean to have several more or less fundamental laws changed & I fear my father in law will have anything but a pleasant time! My mother in law too has contrived to make herself more & more popular & that falls back on him, people even go as far as comparing her to Alicky & say she is just as reactionary! On the 18th of May 1868, the future Tsar Nicholas II was born at the Alexander Palace, he and his cousin King George V had a special bond which lasted until Nicholas and his family were murdered, although, Nicholas always hated it when people remarked on how similar they looked. When George’s father died, Nicholas wrote him a letter full of sympathy and compassion which I wanted to share; ‘Dearest Georgie, Just a few lines to tell you how deeply I feel for the terrible loss you and England have sustained. I know alas! by experience what it costs one. There you are with your heart bleeding and aching, but at the same time duty imposes on your sorrow. Contemporaries unanimously note Nicholas’ great personal charm, his quiet restraint, combined with an ability to converse easily with others, and his excellent memory which allowed him to recall an enormous number of people whom he had met over the years. He spoke and wrote fluent English,and also knew French and German. , the Russian economy expanded during Nicholas II’s reign. This economic growth permitted the currency reform of 1897 which established the gold standard for the rouble. On the eve of World War I, in 1913, the country’s highest level of economic development was reached, During the July Crisis, Nicholas supported Serbia and approved the mobilisation of the Russian Army on 30 July 1914. In response, Germany declared war on Russia on 1 August and its ally France on 3 August, starting World War I. The severe military losses led to a collapse of morale at the front and at home; a general strike and a mutiny of the garrison in Petrograd sparked the February Revolution and the disintegration of the monarchy’s authority. After abdicating himself and on behalf of his son, Nicholas and his family were imprisoned by the Russian Provisional Government and exiled to Siberia. NICHOLAS II 18 May 1868 – 17 July 1918 LAST EMPEROR OF RUSSIA Nicholas II was the son of Tsar Alexander III and succeeded to the throne in 1894. He married Princess Alexandra from Germany that same year. The couple had five children, a son, an heir, Alexis, who suffered from hemophilia, and four daughters. Nicholas became leader at a precarious time, a time of unrest, and he was inexperienced and incompetent. There were riots and strikes, which resulted in ‘Bloody Sunday’ in 1905, where his army fired upon a crowd of civilians at St Petersburg. The Tsar had his secret police crushing any opposition. He was blamed for the loss during World War I. Civilians were enduring poverty and were starving hungry, even though Nicholas was one of the richest people during his lifetime. His wife became influenced by a mystic fraud Gregory Rasputin, who she believed could cure their son. Rasputin made the royal couple even more unpopular, and Rasputin was murdered in 1916. Communist group Bolsheviks quickly gained power, Nicholas abdicated, and he and his family were held captive. Though the location of Nicholas’ birthdays varied through the years, his routine rarely did: In the morning he would answer telegrams from foreign relatives and heads of state, as well as congratulations from members of palace staff. At 11 o’clock he would attend an obednya service with members of the extended Romanov family. A grand breakfast would follow, along with more congratulations, before he could finally return home and spend the afternoon as he wished.
