We were lucky to stumble upon Dome Meadow at Tapnell Farm. As pensioners we wondered how we would get on with our Glamping experience. This 5 star accommodation exceeded our expectations. From the fabulous views, luxurious shower, fully equipped modern kitchen, and comfortable beds, we were set. The icing on the cake was the log burner, which we used as the weather was inclement. Supporting traditional crafts with grants In order to preserve the hedgerow as a barrier to livestock, the ‘art’ of hedgelaying was devised to keep the hedge stockproof. The hedge plants are cut through but not all the way so a connection between the roots and the branches is kept. This means that the hedge plant is still alive but can be ‘laid’ down to form a connection between the plants and therefore make it impenetrable to sheep or cattle. Stakes and binding are added to increase its strength before the new growth can restore the tall and broad hedge. Before the invention of barbed wire, hedgelaying was commonly practiced with various styles growing up across the country. The Isle of Wight National Landscape Partnership has sponsored the annual IW Hedgelaying Competition for many years and continues to support the conservation of hedgerows for their flora and fauna. Day 10 update from our Alan, who is currently walking the perimeter of the Isle of Wight. "Day 10 ✔️ done. The last push home. All the way around the beautiful Isle of Wight for Cancer Research UK. It's been an adventure. Some days, up to my ankles in mud and gloop. I didn't think I would get past. But the thought of letting people down kept me going. We have surpassed our target, I am so grateful to those who have sponsored us. In memoriam of Rosemary and Brian. Diane and i are humbled at your generosity. The walk today was in glorious sunshine, maybe they were looking down on me. Some paths were closed and too dangerous to use, so diversions were taken. Others, that I expected to be closed were open and hair-raising. Beautiful coastal views with deadly drops. The view from Culver Down into Sandown Bay was well worth the effort of the climb up.
