Day 41 of #the100DayProject2024 I've decided to work with 'frottage' for this next batch of ten - a fancy name for a simple rubbing technique I found this strange round thing ages ago, treasure-seeking on one of my seaside escapes - I think it may have been some kind of sander disc, but I just loved the texture The black hard wax crayon block picked up the detail nicely on teabag paper, so I simply extended the patterning with a fineliner, adding one line in gold gel pen. WINTER SEASCAPE 💙🩶🩵 Terwijl ik dit schrijf, zit ik in een strandpaviljoen te turen naar 2 surfers in de woeste golven. Het is hoogtij en als ik door het raam kijk, lijkt het alsof ik zelf mee dein op de golven. En dat was ook de intentie van mijn mini-solo trip. Go with the flow. Even weg van alles, de stilte van de natuur opzoeken, zuurstof opdoen en mijn creatief brein prikkelen. Works like a charm, every time 🤩 Van zodra ik in een andere omgeving zit, gaat mijn creatie-modus aan en typ ik in een paar uur enkele mailings uit en stromen de creatieve ideetjes gewoon uit mijn hoofd. Buiten het feit dat ik echt verliefd ben op Zeeland, heeft Domburg toch een speciale vibe. Je kan hier eindeloos naar de Noordzee staren in de verte, de horizon is leeg zo ver je kan kijken (de kust van Engeland is niet zichtbaar, noch andere badplaatsen van de Zeeuwse kust in vergelijking met Breskens bijv). En het licht is hier fenomenaal*. Op mijn to feel list voor 2024 staat o.a. avontuurlijk, creatief, gevoed, geïnspireerd, gegrond. CHECK ! ✔️ Wanneer deed jij voor het laatst iets helemaal voor jezelf? Begin klein en drink bijv. eens een koffietje in een leuke koffiebar die je graag wil ontdekken. Gewoon omdat het kan, gewoon voor jezelf, met jezelf op date. Geniet ervan!🙏🏻 Dat doe ik hier ook met volle teugen. My day was well and truly brightened when I opened my bundles from yesterday's dye pot ☀ The leaves from the @chelsea_physic_garden were rather tired and a bit too dry and wrinkled, having been gathered in the rain from muddy paths, and then left for a week before I could work with them, so I wasn't holding out much hope... Two bundles of promise... A few highlights from yesterday's unexpectedly rewarding eco-print with a rhubarb dye bath These pages are a separate stack to the little concertina of garden leaves that I shared yesterday The majority of leaves used here, are the fallen Turkey Oak leaves from @upnor.castle , but there's also a handful of oval-ish leaves that I gathered last minute along the path as we headed to the exit. I couldn't see which tree they came from, so if anyone can help identify, simply from the leaf shape alone, I'd be grateful (birch, perhaps? 🤔) - they've printed beautifully, and added a golden glow of colour throughout ☀ I adore their little curly 'tails' too 🍃 . It's no good.... After my talk with @southend_seaside_stitchers last weekend, I was itching to do some eco-printing again 🌿 I'd gathered fallen leaves from a Turkey Oak tree while we explored @upnor.castle a few weeks ago (just in case!... ) - apparently these trees might have been grown from acorns brought back from Crimea after the war The leaves needed rehydrating, so I decided to dunk them in stewed tea, in case it helps the print - tannins and rust make a great combination, and I've always got old tea bags lying around 🍵 I also scavenged a few rose petals 🌹 and paper hearts from a recent wedding at Upnor (what a great setting! 💕), and scattered them between the pages The eco-dye bath is stewed rhubarb, gifted by a friend but left too long to be edible (sorry @gail.mercer.16 🙏 ) - I've no idea if it will work, as there's not much colour showing, but half the fun is following the 'what if' spark - and also making use of what's to hand ☺ Talking of which, the last pic shows my latest kerbside acquisition - I think it's an old rusty firepit, which will make an excellent witches couldron 🧙♀️ Not so sure hubby agrees! 😱 #EcoPrinting #BotanicalPrinting #EcoPrints #EcoPrintOnPaper #BotanicalPrint #NaturalColour #Oak #Forager #WhatIf #FollowTheSpark #NaturesBounty #NaturesMagic #NaturalTherapy #NatureIsTheBestArtist #SheilaghDysonArtist #SheilaghDyson

In my conversation with songwriter Aisha Badru, she told me her story of sitting in college feeling something in her gut telling her there was more for her than the path she was on. She wanted to explore her love for songwriting but knew her parents would disapprove of the decision to pursue music as her career choice. Ultimately, Aisha decided to go with her gut and made the decision to drop out and pursue music. A year later, her father heard her music on a Volkswagen commercial. When we have something pulsing in our heart, we have to 𝗱𝗼 𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 and not worry about whether it will work out or not. We have to find courage and follow the creative spark! If you have a sensitive reader, or a lover of outdoor stories, get to know Growly 💕 We have long loved the Growly series and wholeheartedly enjoyed this one, and snagging moments whenever possible to finish this before spring… although the trees are budding in my neck of the woods. 😅 We started reading the Growly series when my now 10 year old was 5. They were a bit of a stretch for him at the time, due to the length and long descriptive passages. However, they were a perfect fit for him as a sensitive listener because there are no “bad guys.” These books are full of the most endearing characters who persevere against challenges and demonstrate grit and self sacrifice at each step. They’re perfect for nature lovers as they all center around adventures in the outdoors. They are infused with such a spirit of teamwork and fighting for the good of others, even at great personal cost. Chasing Vermeer was such a fun read! It took us at least a month to complete amongst our history read alouds, but the boys begged for more reading time! (My listeners are 10y and 8y.) Art and mystery are intertwined as friends Calder and Petra become involved in solving an international art scandal. I love the way this novel got the kids talking about art and looking closely at paintings, and it was a perfect book leading up to our field trip to an art museum. The illustrations by Brett Helquist were a mystery of their own, with hidden clues that intersect with the story. Pentominoes are involved in the story as well, for a fun math tie-in. I stay safe and comfortable in what I KNOW. And, the spark fades. But, it never really leaves. If it keeps coming up for you, maybe it's meant for you. Or maybe, it will lead you to the thing that is. If you follow it, honor the nudge in your soul, maybe it will show you whatever it is you need to know or see right now. How will you really know unless you try? You can also choose to ignore it. Again. But how does that feel? The spark is likely around something new, unknown territory, which can feel super scary and uncomfortable. 🖤 WHAT IF... you 𝐥𝐞𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐰𝐚𝐲? 🖤 WHAT IF... it can be scary AND amazing, beautiful, joyful, expansive? SPARK is my 2023 "word of the year." I lean into the "new year, fresh start" talk. Having a theme gives me something to use as a center. I have many great SPARKs throughout the day - ideas that excite me, but they come and go. This year, I want to follow my SPARK and fan the flames. If I have an exciting idea, I want to consciously do what I can to follow it through. I know this will bring happiness and fun connections. Last year, my word was FLEXIBLE. I used it to let go of outcomes. I focused on doing my best and tried to let go of high expectations. It led to less disappointment and frustration. I also saw that I let things play out more. If someone upset me, I didn't react, and most times, they calmed down or even came around to address the conflict. I added extra self-care and time to rest because taking the high road can lead to weariness and short patience in other areas of life. I also used this word to increase my physical flexibility - I upped my tennis game with twice-weekly team practices. I loved the team camaraderie and cheering on each other as our individual skills improved. I also added strength training and more yoga to my routine. I am happy to walk into 2023 continuing these good things by being emotionally and physically flexible. Who else does a "word of the year?" We enjoyed this 50 page novella in one sweet sitting. A boy sets out with his father to attempt to procure a milk cow for the boy's mama and baby sister, by bartering. Along the way the boy learns about trading and a dose of perseverance as they walk through the snow in an increasing blizzard. I appreciated the family dynamic and service for others above self. I love a seasonally themed read aloud, and this one set in early January was just pitch perfect! Day 27: The struggle is real. Today, I'm gonna be grateful for the things that don't go exactly as planned... like this poor turkey. (It was doomed from the start, but that's another story!!) Like the pictures that didn't turn out, or the plans that go awry, or the project that didn't turn out even close to the way it looked on Pinterest... Sometimes, shit goes wrong. Sometimes, it goes *really* wrong. But that's okay.. over the years, I've learned to ride the waves... I ask myself, "Is this going to matter in 5 years? Hell, even in 1 year?!" And if the answer is no -- and it usually is -- then let it slide.. @hillarysonger reminded me in class the other day that the challenges you've overcome -- both big and small -- have made you who you are!! Be thankful for that!! Honestly, I've spent soooo long worrying about things I have ZERO control over. I'm soooo grateful for finally getting a handle on that headspace.. not letting those thoughts take over. Do I still worry?! Fuck yeah. But I try not to let it bring me down. Do things still bug the shit outta me?! Fuck yeah. I mean, look at the calender numbers.. they don't even match!!! At first, I was irritated af. But now, who cares?! Doubt anyone even noticed til I pointed it out!! And that's the key. That applies to soooo many things!! The bullshit that you're worrying about right now, ain't nobody paying attention to that but YOU. Do yourself a favor and LET. IT. GO. Just look for the good. Find your blessings. Seek out the gratitude you feel for the things you have. Find your happy. Follow the spark. During a really good talk with @ashleythelifecoach last night, I jotted this down in my notes... it really stuck with me, and I was able to implement it immediately!!! This morning, at class, the gal in front of me was SO FAST with her transitions!! Instead of bemoaning her superior agility, I thought, 'Dang, she's so good at this!! I'm gonna keep at it til I'm rocking these transitions just as quick!!" 🥧 I'm not sure I've ever been witness to something so brilliantly simple & enlightening... and so absolutely frightening & depressing at the same time. I'm talking about pie charts. Specifically, THESE pie charts. My pie charts. The pie charts showing how I spend my time. The 24 hours -- 24 slices! -- of God-given time every single day. It's not good. I was shocked to see how little spare time I've actually got... and how much of that time I literally waste.. with bullshit. This exercise was so insanely eye-opening... I think about "my pie" all the time now.. I still haven't entirely mastered the empty slices, but, dammit, I'm doing my best to fill them with things that ACTUALLY MATTER. More books, less screens.
