If your goal is to foster a love of learning, a trust in your child’s ability, and a mutual respect for feelings, then honoring when our child is done with a learning activity is equally as important as honoring when they ask you to stop roughhousing or anything else. I expect some pushback on this. “But what about teaching resilience?” “But what about finishing what you started?” These are character traits that develop over time. And they are far more meaningful when your child develops them because they have a personal reason, not because it’s required by an adult. By honoring their boundaries in learning, you are supporting that personal development and growth, and helping them learn to trust their bodies and brains when they need a break - an incredibly important skill to carry into adulthood! How do you honor the boundaries your child sets for themselves?
We all stayed up last night to catch the northern lights! I have to admit, when my friend texted me about it, I thought maybe we'd see a faint stream of color through the sky. But what we saw absolutely blew my mind! We had a globe of swirling colors overhead streaming down all around us. It was amazing. The kids were very quick to point out that we've seen two special moments in the sky this year, first the solar eclipse and now aurora borealis. So many people are sharing such magical pictures of their experience. ¡Feliz Día de las Madres! Today is a very special day in the Mexican Culture! This is one of the most important and cherished holidays in Mexico! In this photo you see my grandma’s with my newborn baby Kennedy. My Daddy’s (who I’m named after) is half Mexican and Half German she always did tell me today was special to her mom who was from Mexico. And my mommy’s mom who is from Mexico, and loved today so of course we celebrate her today! This photo is so special to me because both sets of my grandparents showed up at the same time to meet Kennedy! Something I have always cherished and loved is my grandparents got along so well. They talked and laughed and truly cared for each other’s child like their own. Without these two strong women that little baby in the photo wouldn’t be here! so to them I’m forever grateful for being here today! And I celebrate them today and always! I’m sure you’re thinking where is your mommy!?? Well she doesn’t like me posting photos of her so if you ever see her on my social 😮💨 that’s a rare one. I was talking to my mommy and she said “today is my mom’s day” and I know what she means I felt it in her voice and the way she looked at me. You may not know but my mommy’s mom passed away a few years ago and it still hurts for any of us to talk about. We loved her deeply. My daddy’s mom has dementia and she no longer knows me or any of us so it just feels so empty. And we love her and the memories we have of her. My grandmas will always be celebrated and my mommy took on today because yes, “I’m Mexicanish”. And my girls are beyond proud of their heritage and want to learn all they can. So I’ve made it a goal to teach them all I can. Before my Grandma passed away she loved to hear about what handwork they were doing, what Spanish they learned. The girls were so proud to share and it made me proud of my girls! We will celebrate today to not only honor our roots on where our grandmas come from but for all Mexican women today! ¡Feliz Día de las Madres! And I hope every one of you feels celebrated not only today but everyday!

The kids explored types of wood, tested out dyeing wood with vegetables, and making wood mosaics. So proud of Kiel who participated in the young authors book share today at a local library! After much deliberation, he decided to do a work of non-fiction, writing a kids guide to Door County. He learned not only about writing and got lots of typing practice, but also about book layout, design principals, publication, editing and book tours. So much more than I thought we’d get out of this project, and it was AMAZING. 📕 The coolest part? His book is being entered into the Door County Library system (Sister Bay branch) and will be available for checkout starting in about two weeks! I spent this week shut indoors as we braved potty training our youngest. My spitfire child proved to be my longest, most difficult training of all three kids. And anyone who knows June isn’t the least bit surprised. 😏 But as Abbie from @m.is.for.mama has coined: “Hard is not the same thing as bad”! So to celebrate our success, we took a day trip to a nearby nature park to play in the river and do some birdwatching. Here’s the point… Every mama understands those seasons of isolation, whether long or brief. The moments where God places you in the refining fires and holds you there. We feel them every time we serve our families, with every dinner prepared, every sick child tended to, every snowed-in winter and storming summer. Our never-changing God remains steadfast in our ever-changing reality. I am so thankful that He is with me when I so desperately want out of the fire. That I can be closer to Him when the flames die out. Sanctified. Renewed. The last couple of weeks our focus of study has been slavery in the United States. I am so grateful for the amazing books and resources we used as they helped to bring such depth and meaning to this difficult subject. I don’t think there was a day I didn’t cry during our lesson. It’s honestly been one of the most memorable studies we’ve done. These resources and activities are so great for any family (not just homeschoolers) for Juneteenth, Black History month, MLK Jr day, or just to increase compassion. Let me know if you have any questions at all. I appreciate all the dm’s, so keep them coming. ▪️We read some superb books about the experience of slaves. I highly recommend all of these. (Not pictured: Our Star Spangled Story + From Sea to Shining Sea.) ▪️We watched the movie Harriet (Netflix) and learned all about Harriet Tubman. ▪️We learned about the significance of Spirituals and listened to many of them. Our favorite was Wade in the Water by The Spirituals Choir (YouTube.) ▪️We learned about the cultural and historical significance of several southern dishes (key lime pie, gumbo, and peach cobbler) and made them using traditional recipes. (Recipes from @beautifulfeetbooks) ▪️We learned about the use of lanterns in the Underground Railroad to signify safe houses and made tissue paper ones to hang in our window. (Idea from @littleschoolofsmiths) ▪️We learned about the use of specific quilt patterns to help escaped slaves and colored some paper ones. ▪️We played with my Topsy Turvey doll that I bought in South Carolina. It was made by a beautiful black woman. We also learned about the history of these dolls. I’m happy to share any additional info you might need!

Just because a 5yo child is forced to learn how to read does not mean it was a developmentally appropriate time for them to learn that skill. And all we’ve likely done is create resistance and trauma around the learning process by forcing it before they were ready. 💔 That’s just one example, but we can find them all throughout childhood. Pressure to learn and perform that learning is NOT how to encourage a lifelong love of learning and passionate creativity. My sweet ballerinas performed beautifully at their recital last night! It is so special as a a parent to watch your children practice and work hard at something and then experience the fruits of their labor. I’m so proud of my girls! Kennedy and Rowan take ballet through a local fine arts academy for homeschoolers. This allows them to take classes during the day, and it’s *way* more cost effective than other options. Stop trying to do all the things if you (or the kids) are feeling overwhelmed. You don’t have to play by anyone’s rules but the ones you make for yourself (yes, this is true even when you have to document things for the state!). Anytime you hit a feeling of overwhelm, don’t just uncomfortably push it. That will only kill the joy of learning. Instead, slow down and simplify things. Set aside anything that is causing you or the kids an undue amount of stress or anxiety and focus on the things that work, that feel good, and that flow with ease. You can always add things back in later. Practice honoring your time with only the things that feel good. This is a wonderful lesson for your children to carry into adulthood.

On Monday mornings we love to visit the library. The library is quiet, the books are waiting and my girls are excited to not only return but walk the aisles of books. After they select books they come sit on a table and fill out their book journals. They take it so serious, filling out the details, what county, the date, if it’s a series or stand alone. As they grow older they are finding what genres they love, finding their favorite authors, reading books together. It’s something special watching the girls grow together loving books. I hope their love for books never end and they always get lost in the pages…
Sometimes we are in such a hurry to get from one thing to the next that we don’t realize how much joy we are accidentally taking away from our children. Today, focus on this simple mantra: let them enjoy things. No matter what it is, let them focus on the joy. See where it leads you. 💚

One of the biggest reactions to unschooling I see is: “There’s no way I could do that - I need STRUCTURE.” Unschooling doesn’t mean doing whatever you want all day every day. It simply means rejecting the standard and traditional methods of education and leaning into trust in your child’s abilities as a learner. We unschool, but we have a general routine that meets the needs of every member of our family. Feeling like your learning needs to be regimentally structured is based an engrained belief that you and/or your children cannot be trusted to learn any other way. Recently I posted about the importance of celebrating things outside of academics with our children - passions, talents, interest, creativity, pleasures, and relationships…. And while it’s been an overwhelmingly positive post, there was one comment that really broke my heart. This parent stated that the rest of us could go ahead and raise kids like this, which will be great for her kids to be able step on all of them and easily rise to the top. And boy, what an indication of the deep and true HURT that this rat race to the top has created somewhere deep in us all. Sure, we don’t all feel that heartless. But it often manifests instead in fear - fear that if we don’t push our kids to be the very best, they won’t be able to compete with others in the future. It’s too scary to imagine a future where that competition doesn’t have to exist (or at least doesn’t have to be menacing). 💚 It’s like walking on hot coals and forcing our children to do the same because all the other people are doing it too and we don’t want them to look weak. When we could just all collectively step off into the cool sand. Yet we’re all too afraid to be the ones to bravely and confidently step first. Today, be brave. Be confident. Take a different path. If not for you, do it for your kids. There’s more of us than you think, and empathy, passion, and creativity WILL win in the long run. 💚
My dearest son Kaleb, I knew this day would come, but I never expected it to come so quickly. Being our firstborn, we’ve tried everything on you first. Public school, charter school, homeschooling with different co-ops and without, and post secondary education at Greenville Tech in your final years. And here you are, finally at the finish line of your homeschool journey. But remember, education truly has just begun. Education is an atmosphere, a discipline, a life. We continue to learn about God’s world until the day we meet Him in eternity. There is always something new around the bend. Don’t forget your love for books; you always warmed my heart when I’d find you reading in the car, at the beach, while your father and brothers were ice-fishing; you were the family book-worm. Always be on the lookout for new discoveries, the world is full of them and we enrich our lives when we uncover new things. And embrace traveling and exploring the beautiful and majestic world the Lord has placed you in. Today we don’t know where the Lord will take you, but we can rest in the fact that His story for you will be a perfect one as long as you make Him your first priority. I love you my dear Kaleb, and nothing more will make your father and I joyful than to see you serving the One who created you. May the Lord bless your next decisions, grant you wisdom, and give you a longing to serve Him. And most importantly, remember the words of the prophet Micah: “He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?” With love, Your mama and papa.
Sometimes there are minutes between when I talk to a parent and they make a decision to pull their child out of school, enroll in @bridgeacademy.us, or dive into a more unschooling type of learning with their child. Sometimes it’s weeks… they need some time to get their ducks in a row before jumping in. Sometimes it’s months… they aren’t confident right away or need time to encourage a co-parent to go all in. Sometimes it’s years… yes, YEARS. But please know…. I’m here. However long it takes you. However long you need to get there. Happy National Space Day!!!!! Today is the first Friday in May! Which means today is dedicated to the positive impact and opportunities in the exploration of space! Today we focus on the extraordinary achievements and benefits that help the United States scientific development! We put up our space books and talked about different things! I think we need to take a trip to @thediscoverycube and play the rover game! Really dive in the space section that is here locally to help my girls learn! Currently Skye is using @blossomandroot for fifth grade and she just embarked on the “space section” for science! It’s cool to have a day like today to talk about all things out there and next week we will take the girls camping so they can look up to the sky and find various constellations and maybe some satellites!!
One of the most difficult things I had to do as a homeschool mom was deschool myself. Everything done in public school is done "for the test." I mean, how else are they going to know that you've learned anything, right? Wrong. With a Charlotte Mason education, we spread a feast. We introduce our kids to a wide variety of beautiful topics; art, music, nature, living books, and so much more. Not everything will be tested (narrated). Many of these topics are meant to be enjoyed for what they are so a child can form his own relation to it. Listen, most of the time I’m really gentle on social media. I teach, I share, and I don’t pass judgment. But sometimes I just gotta come for ya... Recreating school at home is truly not any different than having your kid in a classroom. The rigid schedule, the workbooks, the desk and chair sitting, the overwhelming amount of posters, the division of subjects, the performative assessments... Just because YOU are the one doing this to your child and not a teacher doesn’t make it better. It actually makes it worse... you’re the one that’s supposed to TRUST your child. To know them better than anyone and to follow their lead. It’s hard enough for a child to recover from that educational trauma imposed on them by a teacher/school. It’s a while other level of recovering from that by a parent. 💔 Now listen... If you didn’t know better, give yourself grace. Now you know. You can change and heal together. No one said it was easy. Often we do this because we don’t know any different! We haven’t healed from our own educational wounds and we’re doomed to repeat them. You can make this change, and we can help you! Originally when I wrote this post, I was referring to a classroom and school environment. Recently though, I’ve noticed how true this is for many, many homeschooling children too. Parents- if you choose homeschooling, remember all of the reasons you left the classroom and do your best not to replicate that experience for your child. If you’re hitting resistance with learning, assess why that’s happening. Look at the environment and expectations - are they unique to your child or mimicking what would happen in a classroom? Baby bird drama! I heard distress outside and I thought it was caused by my cat hunting but it was actually a baby bird that fell out of a nest. Couldn’t find the nest and mom was nearby, frantic. Baby was not fully feathered so not likely that it was learning to fly and crash landed. I read that in this case, you should make a nest and put the baby in it. So I did, and then found a second baby bird! I might need to make a bigger nest but watching carefully to see what happens. I may be crushing worms tomorrow lol. #thisishowwehomeschool

We have finally completed our unit on Farmyard Animals 🐄 I must say, I'm so happy we're finished. I don't typically like to share anything negative about curriculum we use because Every family is different, therefore, every family will have a different experience with said curriculum. What we didn't like about it could be the very thing that another family Loves about it. The only thing I will say is that I purchased this particular unit study with the idea that it would act as a science unit since it is stated as being a Living Science unit. I'm not 100% in the know about the Charlotte Mason method so maybe I'm not understanding how science works using that method. But to me, this didn't feel anything like a science unit. The lessons followed a book (the one pictured) and each lesson focused on one particular farm animal. The only problem for me was that every lesson was basically the same. Read the chapter, color or draw a picture, sometimes there would be little things to look up like what is a male goose called?, and then some picture books. Had I not added in some notebooking pages from the Farm Anatomy book I feel like we wouldn't have had any bulk to this study. Again, this was Our experience. For me, I wouldn't consider this a science unit. At least not in the way we're used to approaching science. However, we enjoyed it for what it was-reading books about farm animals! We read many wonderful books during this unit study!

The woods provide a classroom for grounding, centering, hearing our inner voices, connecting to the world around us, physical challenge, building emotional resilience. These are critical skills to have as an adult yet you will not find these lessons in common core curriculums. This is why we choose to #homeschool in the forest some days. Math is essential. Some food for thought this morning… I have parents asking me daily how they can motivate their children to learn or engage or care about their learning. Yet we never stop to think about WHY they might be feeling this way in the first place! Our school system and society does not encourage free thinking, creativity, and following your passions - it expects following the line, performing your knowledge, and fitting in with the status quo. So how can we expect our children (especially those who are coming out of that system) to suddenly feel safe enough to be their most creative selves?! 😵💫 The answer: we can’t.
