Happy Place 🏡 We are currently changing this room over to our “school-time room” but still making it feel like home. I’m sure there will be so many emotions captured here over the next year, smiles, tears, sibling rivalry and brotherly love. This summer, I’ll be slowly adding to this space and choosing curriculum that fit the needs of each of my boys. I would love to share this journey for anyone else in my shoes - who really wants to do this, but has no idea where to start 🥴 - Transitioning to homeschool after not only growing up in public school, but having the boys only in public school all these years will take time and I’m sure a lot of deconstruction of what school “should” look like. I anticipate that this will be the biggest challenge of our lives, but also, the most rewarding! I’m excited to honor the Lord’s nudge and take these boys under our own wings, and prepare them to take on the world as disciples.

This was a @history_unboxed project that the entire family enjoyed creating and will continue to play on many park days. We were studying the colonial period , mostly through the adult’s perspective, but this #historyunboxed project really highlighted what the children did for pastime ; games . And , unexpectedly, brought back childhood memories of me and my friends, playing skellzies, on the NYC streets. (We used milk bottle caps filled with candle wax as game pieces to knock our opponents out from the grid.) #learningthroughplay #ushistory #childhoodgames #handsonlearning #nycplayground #middleschoolhomeschool

FIELD TRIPS • Sometimes going on adventures is about extending learning about something they are already excited about - snorkeling with shark because my son is obsessed with sharks, going to see a Broadway musical because she’s obsessed with theater - and sometimes it’s about exposing them to something new. REMINISCING ABOUT PRESCHOOL DAYS with my kids today • They want to turn our house into an ocean right now “like they did in preschool” because we’re learning about the ocean (again). We just started reading THE WILD ROBOT PROTECTS and it’s launching all the ideas. I love that they still love art. I love that they still have imaginations. I love that they still get excited about learning. I love that books are still driving much of our learning. I love that learning can still be fun even when preschool is a decade in the rear view mirror. #homeschool #homeschooling #homeschoolmom #middleschool #middleschoolhomeschool #preschoolart

Language Arts with @oakmeadowschool #homeschoolingmom confession- - - - I really have not led any poetry lessons before this one. EEK! I usually passed it over. (Shhh....Don't tell) But I was looking into some specialized exams, and it can't be avoided any longer. Thankfully, this was a beautiful lesson filled with deep discussions and interest; even my 5th grader willingly participated with us. We read two poems that were suggested by #oakmeadowhomeschool, "I Lost My Talk", by Rita Joe and "There Are Birds Here" by Jamaal May. My C2 noticed that Rita didn't have an indigenous name and was upset that her name was stolen but was still willing to share and teach her culture to the “thieves”. My son was bothered that Jamaal was trying hard to convince someone that his hometown is beautiful. “Who is he talking to? That person seems closed-minded.” We also found and listened to an audio of May reading his poem and his voice really communicated his frustration with ‘they’. Both kids now want to know, “What happened to Detroit?” - - A little rabbit hole is in our future. #oakmeadowhomeschool #oakmeadow7 #homeschoollanguageart #Literacy #homeschoollanguagearts #collegeready #homeschoolmiddleschool #middleschoolhomeschool #poetry #poetryanaylsis #familyreading

Today we were honored with the opportunity to watch The Changing of the Guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. The weather held off just long enough for us to walk around to witness that, see JFK’s burial site, and tour the Arlington House and earn another Jr. Ranger Badge. Today we also visited the Pentagon Memorial. We tried to get into the Pentagon because we saw there was a gift shop on the map but apparently you need pre-authorization with background checks and whatnot. Obviously! 😝 We saw the Jefferson Memorial before calling it quits when the rain and wind returned. We had a great trip. We saw a lot but still missed a lot. Oak Meadow is proud to share that Maielle Merriam, who will graduate from Oak Meadow this year, has a paper published in the Spring Issue of The Concord Review, an academic journal publishing history papers from high schoolers around the world. The Concord Review accepts about 5% of submissions.⁣ ⁣ Maielle's paper, "'The Senator with a Conscience': Charles Sumner, the Free Soilers of Massachusetts, and the Coalition of 1850-1851," stemmed from her year-long Advanced Study Project (ASP) with Oak Meadow teacher Joseph Malherek.⁣ ⁣ The ASP is a unique way for Oak Meadow enrolled students to earn high school credit for their own academic or professional endeavors. More details on the ASP options Oak Meadow offers our enrolled high school students, see the link in our bio.⁣ ⁣ Congratulations to Maielle on this amazing accomplishment!

First day in Washington D.C. was cold and rainy but productive! We went to the National Art Gallery to see the only DaVinci in the United States, perusal around the National History Museum, Junior Ranger Badge completion at the White House Visitor Canter and Museum, a peek at the White House, and a walk around the national Mall to see some of the monuments. Hello friends, my name is Rose. I’m a wife and mama to 2 beautiful girls. I’m passionate about homeschooling and helping others make money online. I love to make sourdough bread, bake all the treats, and going to learn gardening this year!!! About 18 months ago l left my corporate job to stay home with my girls. But as prices continued to rise, I needed to find a way to help my family financially. I knew going back to a 9-5 would not be ideal for my family. I’m already a busy mama, couldn’t imagine adding a 9-5 to the equation. I needed a way to continue to stay home that allowed flexibility. Being able to continue to homeschool is very important to my family. That’s when I found this Master Resell Rights course. The concept made perfect sense to me. Funny story...I tried to open an Etsy shop about a year ago and had no success. And it wasn’t until I started this course I understood why. I believed you just posted products on Etsy and they’d sell. It never occurred to me I needed to market it. And this course has shown me how!!! If you are looking for a way to enter into the online space and making passive income while being at home or anywhere! Do not wait! Your launch pad is HERE! And I cannot wait to help you get started!!! Believe me mama, if I can do this, YOU can too!! I’m just a regular mama who knew I had to try. #middleschoolhomeschool #elementaryhomeschool #digitalmom #digitalhomeschool #homeschoolmomjobs #idahomama #howtomakemoneyonline #homemaking #homeschoolingmom #honestmotherhood #christianfamily #schoolingathome

My favorite literature quote of all time has become a metaphor for my life. If you've been around, you know what I'm talking about. It's the time of year where I have a conference with my dragons. The real life limitations upon my time, health, effort, and energy when it comes to homeschooling my children. I imagine the beautiful year we are going to have next year, write down all the things we want to do, and reconcile that with the dragons that live with us. They help keep me accountable, settled, and humble. So while I plan, I take inventory of my dragons. I account for them. I factor them into our calculations. They don't surprise me when they crawl from the depths of the mountains because I knew they were there all along. Do you remember to account for your limitations when planning a new school year? 🌿 🌿 🌿 🌿 🌿 🌿 🌿 #homeschooling #charlottemasonhomeschool #charlottemasonathome #howwehomeschool #homeeducation #charlottemasonathome #homeschoolmom #homeschoolingkindergarten #homeschoolingmiddleschool #middleschoolhomeschool #howwecharlottemason #motherhood #readaloud

Perception is a funny thing. Someone just asked me why I’m only posting books for teens and adults nowadays.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ That’s not true! I still post plenty of elementary and middle grade books here and especially on my website where all the real magic goes down.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I’m still sharing what I’ve always shared: what we’re reading in our home. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ My kids are getting older, so I’m reading MANY more young adult books so I can:⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 1️⃣ Be a cool mom 😎⁣⁣ 2️⃣ Ensure that what they’re reading is age appropriate and within reason ⁣based on our family’s guide rails⁣ 3️⃣ Recommend books I think they’ll enjoy⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ So it’s true that I’m sharing more things that will appeal to teens (and moms), but I also have a 2nd grader and another elementary kiddo and a middle schooler, so I’m in it to win it in EVERY category.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Perception can make us feel like something is true even if it’s not.⁣ ⁣ Don’t worry! I gotchu. 😉 ⁣ ⁣ ⁣⁣

Crossing places off our homeschool bucket list! The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island did not disappoint. We were going for the Statue of Liberty but the boat stopped at Ellis Island first where we spent the majority of our time. I wasn’t expecting much but was very surprised and pleased. I wish the kids were old enough to do the Hard Hat Tour that takes you to the grounds that are otherwise off limits. Maybe next year. Tickets were not available for the pedestal or crown of the Statue but I don’t think we missed much there. We didn’t spend much time because there really wasn’t much to do and a lot of the information the kids already knew. Junior Ranger badges were successfully earned at both locations. This field trip is easily in my top five! “DIY saves so much money” is a lie. I didn’t want yesterday’s post to be too long, but I have more to say about the kids always creating stuff while I’m reading to them.⁣ ⁣ It is expensive!⁣ ⁣ The supplies for their many projects cost MUCH more than it would be to just buy a similar already-completed item at Target or wherever.⁣ ⁣ Their creative lives require a willing investor (That’s me!).⁣ ⁣ Whether we order things online or hit up local hobby or craft stores with coupons or shop garage sales for widgets and whatnots, it all adds up.⁣ ⁣ And the older they get, the most specific they are about what they make and how it’s done. ⁣ ⁣ On TV, you see teens salivating over a cute pair of pink boots. My reality is teens dragging me all over town looking for JUST the right shade of pink yarn.⁣ ⁣ There must be 746 shades of pink chenille in metro Atlanta, and I promise you that I’ve seen AND discussed every single one. ⁣ ⁣ And apparently, they’re all trash. Pink fluffy trash. Whatever the 747th shade of pink yarn is, that’s the one they’re looking for.⁣ ⁣ Both of my girls have their own income — one babysits weekly and the other sells things online and thrifts — so they often buy their own materials, but I still end up spending a LOT.⁣ ⁣ I look at their handcraft supplies kind of like books.⁣ ⁣ I supply the core of what’s needed for you to do great things, but you can spend your own money on the frivolous stuff when you want to splurge or you’re just being extra. ⁣ ⁣ So as sweet as it may be to have “maker” teens, it is not a low-cost lifestyle. ⁣ ⁣ DIY is expensive as… 🔥🔥🔥⁣

Hello Friends, my name is Rose. I’m a homeschooling, sourdough loving and working towards a homestead mama!!! I have 2 beautiful girls, and an amazing husband who works so hard for our family. I love to talk curriculum, I could spend hours in the garden, and love sitting down with a good book!! Anyone else excited it’s curriculum season? I stepped away from my corporate job about 20 months ago. We were living comfortably for a while, but as prices continued to rise, my husband and I discussed the need for me to go back to the corporate world. We both knew that was not the ideal solution for our family. We wanted to continue to homeschool, so we needed flexibility. If you’re a homeschooling mama, I’m sure you’ve made digital resources for your homeschool, or you’ve purchased from another mama. That’s what digital marketing is, creating a product once, to sell over and over!!! I kept seeing all these regular, everyday mamas making money from home and not having to leave their littles, or pay for childcare. So, I decided to do some research and see what this was all about. And I’m so glad I did, I have never seen a system so well put together. Really felt too good to be true, until I got started! If you are looking for a way to enter into the space of digital marketing and making passive income while being at home (or anywhere!) Do not wait! Your launch pad is HERE! She’s at it again. After telling me that she was never making more of these dolls, my oldest popped one out last week for a family friend. ⁣ ⁣ When I saw that she was out of retirement, I asked if I could have one, and she said that she’s not making them anymore 🤷🏽‍♀️⁣ ⁣ I love teens. We have a great time together, and I wouldn’t trade this stage for the world. ⁣ ⁣ But I STAY confused. There are no patterns to learn. Every day is new.⁣ ⁣ I’ll let you know when I see one of her dolls in the wild because apparently she only makes them when no one asks for one.⁣ ⁣ 📸 The last photo is the batch she made before her first retirement. Some of you will remember those.⁣ ⁣

This is a lovely book (I really enjoyed the illustrations!) about Ada, whom is considered to be the first ever computer programmer. I have to admit, this stuff is way over my head, but I am married to an engineer and he knows and enjoys programming so I like getting books to see if my girls have a spark of interest in things he can easily teach them. 💪🏻Feminism theme: There were no feminism themes in this book! It just talked about a girl who loved math and was very good at it. So refreshing! ‼️However, it does talk about her mother leaving her very promiscuous father and that Ada only knew him through his books. (He was a very troubled man!) While it doesn’t say anything other than that, if you have very inquisitive children who like to ask questions about what things mean then you will probably want to be prepared to talk about what the word promiscuous means and also the subject of divorce. Ada is a fun person to know about, especially in today’s technological world, because she has a computer program language named after her and the 2nd Tuesday in October is known as Ada Lovelace Day encouraging girls in the world of math and computer knowledge! . . . #womenshistorymonth #homeschool #homeschooling #homeschoollife #homeeducation #homeeducator #homeschoolmom #homeschoolbooks #homeschoolfun #homeschoolfamily #elementaryhomeschool #middleschoolhomeschool #eclectichomeschool #delightdirectedlearning #charlottemason #charlottemasonmama #charlottemasoneducation #charlottemasonbooks

AGE OF EXPLORATION • our learning about the Age of Exploration has gone down a bit of a rabbit hole to explorers who went to the North and South Poles which led us to Arctic animals. We’ve spent the past week reading and watching everything we can get our hands on about whales and penguins and other animals in the polar areas. We also went and did some observations of Arctic animals late last week. We’ll head back to our timeline of events eventually but for now I’m delighted by all we’re learning where we are. #homeschoolmiddleschool #middleschool #middleschoolhomeschool

Slowly starting my research for school curriculum for next year, and can’t help but get excited to try this one out! I’ve been researching different geography curriculum and keep coming back to this one! It would do us two years so that’s a bonus! I LOVEEEE books so I think that’s why this particular curriculum speaks to me. We don’t necessarily NEED this in depth study on geography but I’ve found that my kids (and myself included!!) love learning about other places in the world so In a way, it IS is a need! 😁 Anyone try their curriculum? #homeschoolcurriculum #guesthollowcurriculum #homeeducator #homeschool #middleschoolhomeschool #homeschoolcanada #highschoolhomeschool #homeschoolhighschool

This Saturday he is taking part in a @tededucation @98thpercentile Student Talk Masterclass. This masterclass is bringing students together all over the world in grades 3-8. Kids are engaging in conversations about topics that interest them and learning how they can transform those ideas into informative talks and advocate for world change and humanitarian projects. Great experience for him to meet with like minded kiddos and engage in intellectual talks. #teded #tededstudenttalks #98thprecentile #kidworldchangers #futureleaders #kidsforchange #studentleadership #intellectualkids #worldthinkerkids #kids #worldschooling #kidmasterclasses #homeschoolkid #middleschool #middleschoolhomeschool #homeschool #homeschooling

BOOK BASKETS • our office has book baskets of books we’ve gathered for current interests or projects. My kids know these are available at any time to them, but I also pull out books from these baskets to strew different places throughout the week. Current Interests right now include; ✔️ Shakespeare ✔️ Maps ✔️ Antarctica Places I strew books: 📍Kitchen table in the morning, often with a related journal. Ex. books about explorers to Antarctica + their social studies journal. 📍Living room 📍Car - I rotate books in a basket that sits in the car.

I love that my child likes to read and has great reading comprehension, but just because a child loves to read and has great reading comprehension can they do ? 📚Character study 📚Vocabulary 📚Breakdown Literary Elements 📚Identify Figurative Language 📚Plot the story structure 💡One way I work on these areas is using novel studies practicing these skills NOW will prepare him for the PSAT and his future SAT. It also just makes him a better reader. He is college bound so our journey is different from those who are on a different journey. 🙂He has plenty of time to read whatever he wants without novel studies. Before anyone comes for me talking about sucking the life out of reading by doing novels studies. You have NO IDEA how many books this child goes through on his own. One little novel study every other month isn’t going to hurt his love for reading TRUST ME he reads 3-4 books at one time. Don’t get me started on the amount of medical books in this house 🙃. Thanks @liberated_homescholars for the book suggestion because the first question he asked was who recommended this book? 🤦🏾‍♀️ (like I can’t pick books 😒) Because you gave the stamp of approval he was down 😉! #homeschool #homeschoollife #homeschooltocollege #homeschoolmom #homeschooling #thisishowwehomeschool #homeschoolourway #brownhomeschoolers #blackhomeschool #moorhomeschool #afrolatino #boyswhoread #blackboyswhoread #middleschool #middleschoolhomeschool #momsofinstagram #homeschoolmoms #homeschoolmomsofinstagram #littlelearnerandmom

HOMESCHOOLING RESET • sometimes in the hectic midst of life a pause is needed. We have all been running full speed lately and are finally taking a pause to reset. We are all off until Monday and are eager to have few plans most of the long weekend. I love our busy life. My kids love all of their activities and projects and time with friends. But sometimes a break is necessary. I’m hoping we all come back feeling refreshed and excited to begin again.

Homeschool doesn’t have to be during school hours. It can be after hockey practice, during dinner. Our days are less and less exciting as the kids are getting older. They’ve become more independent and focused on getting their work done. I miss my daily posts with cool games, neat books, or fun experiments but it’s just not us anymore. Hang onto those elementary years. They are fleeting! #homeschooled #middleschoolhomeschool #homeschoolingmiddle #homeschoolingteens #howwehomeschool #youonlygetoneshot #theyreonlylittleonce #funschool

FARM DAY today • we’re volunteering at the horse farm today and it’s fun to think back about how we got here. My kids have always been fascinated by animals. From neighborhood dogs to zoos to documentaries about animals this is a long running interest for both of my kids. Their knowledge of animals at twelve far exceeds mine and they’ve built from reading, watching and interacting with animals and experts as much as they can. What excites your kids? #homeschool #middleschoolhomeschool #learningthruexperience #interestdrivenlearning #interestdriveneducation

We couldn't agree more with Charlotte Mason!. We completely believe books can be our best teachers, which is why we are passionate about choosing WHAT books we build our curriculum around. Some of the books we feel everyone should read (and that we happen to have made units for) are: -Fahrenheit 451 -1984 -Brave New World -Into the Wild -I am Malala -Folks, This Ain't Normal -Where the Watermelons Grow -When Stars Are Scattered -The Giver We are English teachers, so we could go on forever...What books do you think everyone needs to read? The oldest has been working hard on his Apollo 11 project and it is officially done! 🧑🏼‍🚀 He read books and watched videos to find out as much as he could about Apollo 11. Then he put together this project board with images (some his own creation), facts, and also included a Lego model of an astronaut! The cereal box is his “cereal box” book report! It includes his review of the book, the setting, main characters, unique cereal name, and some fun puzzles he created on the back. He named his cereal “Space Flakes”! 🚀 What are your favorite middle school projects? I’m trying to come up with a few more for him to do. Next up is a rock and mineral journal for our geology study! 🌋

Behind every Trojan Horse, there's a tale of creativity, hard work and a deep dive into ancient civilizations. Moving beyond traditional assignments, we delve into the heart of experiential learning. Here's a glimpse at @acceleratedhomeschooling's 9-year-old 6th grader's Trojan Horse assignment, showing their vision of the ancient story, with humans for scale. The Ancient Civilizations studies in 6th grade are a perennial favorite.

🗯️Yesterday he was writing his paper for @iew and @writewithmrsbrown class and he wanted a quality adjective. So he went on a a hunt and loved the “capacious” I literally had to go get a dictionary to see what it meant… he also chose inconsequential! Again me flipping through the dictionary. He says 🗣️ “MOM one means big and the other means small “ 😳 Umm okay I’ll take your word for it son!! So last night I set up his @iew Fix It grammar and pulled out our @wordteasers and decided to pull out our @jackandlinktoys conversation bubbles and spelling bar. This morning when he came to the table. His face lit up and said mom this is cool thanks I love it!! You see even though he is in middle school I want to continue to make learning fun and interactive. Recognizing his hard work and putting a spin on it for him encourages him to continue to learn. I don’t want him to get bored with stuffy curriculum. This is why @oakmeadowschool has been such a good fit for us. 💭 I think that sometimes homeschoolers reach Middle School age we become so consumed with planning high school that we start to suck the life out of what is left of childhood and fast track 10-13 year olds. ❤️Enjoy the middle school years use them to reinforce skills and introduce new ones. High school is the next level of learning and we can do all the prep work and research stress ourselves out and we start to put pressure on our middle schoolers. Now with that said I do have high school mapped out for him but it’s not written in stone things change. I am enjoying 6/7 grade with my kiddo and I am not rushing him to check boxes. Letting him enjoy being a kid and keeping a watchful mental of things I can do better and help prepare him for High School and his future.
