Sometimes our most visceral gut reactions come from past experiences, not from instinct 🙃 It can be easy to confuse an intuitive signal and a trigger. In most spiritual circles, people tell us continually to “trust our gut,” but rarely do they account for what our gut has seen and been through. Sometimes our gut is reacting to a type of programming, born out of a troubled past or a more recent trauma. It can lie and ask us to mistrust people who want to help, and it can also react positively to those whose abuse we recognize and welcome on a subconscious level. We have to work on our healing and peel back the layers of the complex onion that is our psyche in order to actually be in our power enough to trust our instinct. Current reading list, focusing on the magical practices inherent in PA, particularly Braucherei or Powwow from the Pennsylvania Dutch and German immigrants to this region and West Virginia. My family isn't German and there are no ties to the Old Orders further instate where these practices originate, but I do know some ancestors picked up a thing or two from living in and around these communities. Hex signs were around my grandparents house, and supposedly a great great uncle could take the fire out of burns. This is one of many communities where psalms and Bible passages were worked for curing, protecting, blessing or even cursing(though much less common), alongside plants, herbs and signs meant to further empower ones prayer. I know relatively little about these traditions, but looking forward to learning more and maybe finding more hints of these practices in my family. Interesting aside- a friend grew up in Amish country and told me a story his mom told him, of his great grandfather being cured of 'insanity' after someone powwowed his overalls, washing them in some solution. As the first official post, I glorify and thank St. Expedite, patron of urgent causes and swift action! I thank you on this Wednesday for your presence and blessings, fulfilled requests and unexpected gifts. My gratitude and praise is forever yours holy martyr. I only recently began this journey with St. Expedite, and was stunned by how quickly things picked up after introducing myself with a novena. St. Expedite comes to all who call on him, swiftly and with no discrimination. He does not care what your beliefs, practices, lifestyle, etc- he will assist you if you petition him, and there is no obstacle too great for him to resolve, nor any request too minor. The only thing you must remember is to pay him for his work. As I've learned, this means every thing, every time. You ask for help finding 3 of something and you find 1 immediately? Give him his due, or you might be on your own finding the other 2. Asking his intercession or help for more than one thing at a time also tends to mean prioritizing on his part- the lesson I've been taught is one thing at a time. Don't be greedy. I could go on about my experience working with him, lore, favored payment, etc, but so many others have covered him better- I tagged two below! Charging. That’s what I’m doing at this phase of my life, tbh. It’s so funny to me, just as my rocks sit in the sun to charge, I do too. I have to spend time outside. Outside is where I connect. To my roots that run deep in these mountains. To the Earth I care so deeply about. To the Holy Spirit and God both (but mostly the Spirit). To myself. I am made up of my ancestors before me. I am made of the earth and the starts. I am made of God and the Spirt lives in me. And I feel it when I’ve got the sun on my face. Right now, I’m taking things slow. Some days are hard. Some days it’s hard to see the broader picture. It’s hard to catch my breath when so much is happening. But I’m trying to go slow. Life is leading me right now. Life has the reigns. And that’s OK. Anyway, I made these little charging hotels for my rocks and I like them a lot. Used fine ground pink salt as the base and stuck them in the window. I've seen a lot of new-agey, woo woo opinions creeping into folk magic spaces again lately, and sometimes that can be hard to deal with when I'm out here trying to preserve and promote understanding within a tradition 😕 When someone blasts something they don't understand and then puts down a system of magic as "black magic," "evil," or "bad vibes," it's not a whole lot different from some people and groups condemning all magic as the devil's work. How can you exist within magical spaces and refuse to recognize that there is diversity of practice and a spectrum? How can you claim to be spiritual when your morality so closely matches the abusive, dogmatic mess that we grew up under? Anyone from rural WV knows that we LOVE our folklore and this story did it so much justice. Yesterday Mahto and I went up to Grayson Highlands State Park for the first time to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We didn’t run into any other people until right before we left and were headed back down the mountain to the car. It was surreal to be in such a vast and beautiful place and seemingly have the whole place to ourselves. We were successful in finding a small herd of the wild ponies that roam around the park and they barely acknowledged our presence. Luckily the weather held out until right as we were leaving when it started sleeting on us while the sun was shining. There are a lot of talking heads now online, so many voices about the metaphysical, and it's hard to know who to look to and where. Which voices can we trust? Who is actually helping? I only have one answer, and that is to trust yourself and your instinct, to ask questions first and trust second. Part of the reason I chose to pull back from an online presence is because I would rather have authentic interpersonal interactions with anyone coming to me for any reason. I can't relate with a lot of the content making its way into metaphysical online spaces because I can't relate with using a platform to hurt people .
