Sometimes our most visceral gut reactions come from past experiences, not from instinct 🙃 It can be easy to confuse an intuitive signal and a trigger. In most spiritual circles, people tell us continually to “trust our gut,” but rarely do they account for what our gut has seen and been through. Sometimes our gut is reacting to a type of programming, born out of a troubled past or a more recent trauma. It can lie and ask us to mistrust people who want to help, and it can also react positively to those whose abuse we recognize and welcome on a subconscious level. We have to work on our healing and peel back the layers of the complex onion that is our psyche in order to actually be in our power enough to trust our instinct. This week on #InsideAppalachia 🌄, we revisit the art of paddle making and whitewater rafting with Folkways Reporter @clarahaizlett. The paddles he makes are built to last a lifetime. For some paddlers, they are just a stylistic choice. But for Christine Vogler from Asheville, North Carolina, Snyder’s paddles have allowed her to keep kayaking. 🛶 “I simply cannot paddle without a Jim Snyder paddle,” she said. “It’s like my lucky charm.” Vogler has a genetic condition that affects her connective tissue. When she started kayaking, she says her shoulder would dislocate all the time. She tried physical therapy, and eventually had surgery. 🏥 But she kept having pain until she tried one of Jim Snyder’s paddles. “I just was able to paddle without pain,” she said. “It was revolutionary for me.” Paddle makers say wooden paddles aren’t as stiff as the ones off the shelf, making them more gentle on the body. This week on #InsideAppalachia 🌄, we revisit the art of paddle making and whitewater rafting with Folkways Reporter @clarahaizlett. Jim Snyder has been a full-time paddle 🚣 maker for about 47 years. I called him up at his home in Preston County, West Virginia, to ask him about it. “Having real financial support for myself would have been a smart thing,” he said with a chuckle. “But I just wanted to play a lot. I didn’t care if I was poor, and hardly had enough firewood.” Snyder told me it hasn’t been a financially stable career, but it’s been fulfilling. “If you look at it, from my perspective, there was actually the danger of getting a job that would pull me into some career track that I didn’t really want to be in,” he said. “Because I really wanted to be a paddle-maker.” 🎧 Hear this story this week on Inside Appalachia. It seems that the Lightning, initially reluctant, was convinced to record the songs of this album in exchange for a bottle of Gin, And that the recording session took place in the hotel room, just Hopkins and his guitar. The Inuit are credited with inventing what we know as the kayak and the double-faced paddle. But these designs weren’t made for whitewater, and for centuries, many rivers were largely deemed unnavigable. But with the technology that emerged from World War II, like fiberglass and synthetic rubber, adventurers took to the rivers – learning to canoe, raft and kayak on whitewater. “People had to make their own gear, people had to make their own kayaks,” Rugh said. “And then there would be people who would build paddles.” That includes people like Keith Backlund. In all of my conversations with different paddle makers, I kept hearing his name in particular. They say Backlund revolutionized the craft. This week on #InsideAppalachia 🌄, we pay a visit to the Filipino restaurant, Neng Jr.'s, with Folkways Reporter Margaret McLeod Leef in Ashville, North Carolina! "She would sit down on the ground with this really heavy cutting board and tenderize meat and marinate it, and it was a really simple marinade. It was just soy and oil and garlic and onion and black pepper. But it tasted so good to me," Iocovozzi says. Iocovozzi and his mom loved the soy, garlic and onion flavors. His mom is Filipino, and his dad was from North Carolina. "They met in Japan. My dad was stationed there; he was a Marine. My mom, a Filipino woman, was working in Japan at a karaoke bar. She was an entertainer," Iocovozzi says. Iocovozzi's parents met and married, and his mom immigrated to the United States. His mom was the only person of color in her new family. 🌿Lilac Sugar I fall more in love with these flowers every year. Their scent is something I am always trying to find ways to capture, to bottle up, to save for a dreary cold winter day. There is no true lilac essential oil out there on the market. But lilac lilac sugar is one great way to capture their scent. The sugar is easy to make, easy to store, and can be made used in a lot of way. You could add to sweet treats and baked good, add to hot cocoa on a cold winter night instead of sugar, add to oatmeal, add to cool refreshing summer teas (oh my gosh, lilac lemonade would be SO flipping good). Or use in an exfoliating sugar scrub that smells divine. This is what I plan on making when this lilac sugar is done infusing. And I’m going to save some lilac sugar for next winter, when I need to smell something fresh and springy. 🌿Lilac Sugar ¾ cup sugar ¼ cup fresh lilac blossoms *you can double this and use a pint sized mason jar Make sure your blossoms are free of pesticides and properly identified. If you need to, rinse them before using, making sure the blossoms are dry before using to prevent mold. Or shake off any bugs that might be on the lilacs. Use only the delicate petals, the green bits and stems can be a bit bitter and take away from the scent. The little blossoms pop off quite easily. Some people snip, I just pull them off one by one. 🌿To make Lilac Sugar Layer a tablespoon of sugar into the bottom of a jar, then add a layer of lilac blossoms on top, followed by another layer of sugar. Repeat this process until you have filled the jar. Put a lid on it and shake it every day. After a week strain out the lilac blossoms. Some folks leave the lilacs in the sugar but after a while they discolor and do not look as pretty. I strain mine out. You could eat the strained out lilacs as candied lilacs, use in baking, or compost them. Have you made lilac sugar? "It's an affectionate name for a young girl. And I don't, you know, identify as that, but…Neng Jr.'s is an iteration of that nickname stemming from my mom's nickname. Understanding where food comes from — and how to prepare it — was a quest that took Silver Iocovozzi from the Philippines to the American South and around the world 🌏 in the restaurant business. He got his start in Asheville as a dishwasher in 2011 after a friend suggested he'd like the city. Soon, he attended culinary school in the area and worked as a chef 👨🍳 at Buxton Hall BBQ — an Asheville institution — before eventually cooking at award-winning restaurants in Tokyo, New York and Grand Cayman Island. 🏆 In 2020, he returned to Asheville to build his own community around food. 🍲 Within two months, he secured a building with a takeout window for what would later become Neng Jr.'s. Sunday the 5th of May is the Orthodox Easter and we decided to celebrate it with you. The menu is inspired by Romanian Easter traditions. Sacrificing a lamb on Easter was a religious act, accompanied by flowers and holy water, gestures and rituals that differ from area to area. Our lamb will be marinated in wine and herbs and slow cooked on wood with rosemary and garlic to bring out an authentic flavour. It will be served on a bed of white beans cooked in a sweet tomato sauce, flavoured with a delicate fermented tarragon. All this will be served with polenta to hold the sauces and all the flavours nicely. All our guests will be gifted a natural dyed egg. Ebony ( @nettles_and_bees ) will be picking flowers for us to garnish our food and honour our lamb. She'll make sodas with her amazing Rose and strawberry syrup and Vanilla chai tea. For a vegan option you can have everything but the meat and the egg. And when she was in her mid-20s, she decided to learn about the traditions of her ancestors. “In my case, I have ancestors from England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Scandinavia, kind of all over the place. 🌏 And there are several hundreds of years of separation from any of the traditions from those places. So I’ve sought out and learned from other people, English folk songs, Scottish ballads,” she said. Lynch-Thomason said that connecting with these English and Scottish folk songs 🎵 has had a big impact. “There’s something really powerful to me about speaking words and singing songs, holding those vibrations, those words, those forms of knowledge in my body,” Lynch-Thomason said. “And knowing that people in my ancestry also sang these songs and held these words.” 🎧 Hear this story this week on Inside Appalachia. “Etana, etana, näytä sarvet, onko huomenna pouta?” Old Finnish folkways include a little spell to predict weather with the help of snails and their antennas. I think everyone over five has rambled this off once. Antennas out means no rain. Some dialects use “pouta” for sunny weather (it was overcast with some sunshine today), official meteorological definition of “pouta” is “no rain for over 24 hours”. This little snail said there wouldn’t be rain today. It was lovely gardening weather until about 5:30 pm, so I got a cumulative four hours of hard physical labor out of the way in my 1/2 acre kitchen garden. In my household, if we talk of “witch doctors”, we mean the official, educated meteorologists. They’re wrong so frequently it’s a joke. The snail probably doesn’t know what I was rambling about, but from his forecast, it did take 28 hours for rain, so he met the scientific threshold for an accurate forecast. My potatoes are coming up, I’m happy. So far, I’m ahead of weeds in my planted areas. We’ll see how long it lasts. Here's a snippet from the story by @wendywritesbooks that won second in Best Light Feature: With a leap to a nearby ridge, Shawn Means attempted to find the fungi 🍄 on a slope that might have encouraged water runoff, something the mushrooms would have liked. “I want to jump up here and see if I can see any,” Means said. This also proved fruitless. “I don’t see any mushrooms at all,” Means called back before reappearing at the edge of the ledge, empty-handed. 😞 Chanterelles would have been easy to spot, had any been around. Popular for teaching new foragers because of their bright yellow color and distinctive fluted edges that make them look like a tiny trumpet 🎺 they would be hard to mix up with any other mushroom — but not impossible. But here’s the thing — when it closed, the family didn’t just lose the family business. 😨 “We had no need to go to Kroger or Walmart or any other store to shop. And when our store closed, we realized … that there was no quality Italian sausage in the stores,” Louis said. So they just kept making the sausage, first in Sonny’s kitchen and then in a makeshift meat shop 🥩 they set up in his garage. Once family and friends found out, the family started getting orders. “A lot of people, especially the Italian-Americans around here, like the sausage for their Christmas dinners or holiday parties,” Louis said. “Next thing you know, we have an order for 500 pounds of sausage.” The demand was so great, Sonny decided maybe it was time to try a new kind of family business. 🎧 Hear this story this week on Inside Appalachia. I've seen a lot of new-agey, woo woo opinions creeping into folk magic spaces again lately, and sometimes that can be hard to deal with when I'm out here trying to preserve and promote understanding within a tradition 😕 When someone blasts something they don't understand and then puts down a system of magic as "black magic," "evil," or "bad vibes," it's not a whole lot different from some people and groups condemning all magic as the devil's work. How can you exist within magical spaces and refuse to recognize that there is diversity of practice and a spectrum? How can you claim to be spiritual when your morality so closely matches the abusive, dogmatic mess that we grew up under? Each spoon starts with a pattern that is traced onto a board of wood and cut, just like a clothing pattern for fabric. “When we make the spoon or whatever, there's no duplicating machines, there's no computerized equipment. Everything is truly made by hand here at this shop,” Sue says. While there is now a team behind Allegheny Treenware, the Jennings reserve the most difficult part of the process for themselves: the shaping finish of the spoon. Sue also caught the spoon-making bug 🥄 and tried to make a set herself. “The first spoon I made was a set of measuring spoons, and I made it out of rhododendron [wood],” Sue says. “And that's because we had gone to a show and we met a spoon maker, and we talked and talked about him. I was fascinated from the very beginning.” The Jennings discovered there was a whole culture around wooden utensils when they stumbled upon the book Treen and Other Wooden Bygones. Their mutual love of woodworking ended up being the foundation for their own relationship as a couple. 💍 “When I met my husband, we were both working in the coal mines underground. And when we first started getting to know each other, the question we would ask is, ‘If you had anything in the world you wanted to do, what would be first on your list?’” Sue says. “And I said I wanted to be a woodworker. And he had the same dream. So right off the bat we knew there was something pretty special there.” ❤️ The chance to chase their dreams came sooner than expected. One of our all-time favourite Folkways Library collections - Music Of Vietnam selected by the respected Vietnamese songwriter and musicologist Pham Duy. Published in 1965, this ethnographic collection is mind-bogglingly diverse in both the styles, moods, instruments and function of the songs recorded. Split into two halves, the A-side focuses on ‘Pre-Vietnamese Music’, documenting the arcane traditional songs of the indigenous highland Degar and Cham ethnic minorities, whilst the B-side centres on the more classically inclined old Imperial Court music specifically composed for entertainment of the courtiers. Naturally the a-side is the wilder of the two, working as a disorientating barrage of polyphonic xylophone song, otherworldly mouth organ pieces, innocent sung folk and these heart-breaking happy/sad love songs sung accapella in the Dodam Dara style. The ‘learned’ music on the B-side focuses heavily on use of zither and a type of Vietnamese chamber music, that to these ears feels somewhat related to traditional Chinese music or even Japanese gagaku.
