Sign Of The Golden Fish by Gertrude Robinson is a book that I have been meaning to read for years. Other than knowing it was set in Maine and is part of a wonderful series, The Land Of The Free series, I didn't know much about it, so I was pleasantly surprised when it has a lot to do with smoking alewives and preserving fish! The timing of it all has tickled me 😂 This middle grade historical fiction is set in Maine in the 1640s. A Royalist family is forced to flee their home in Cornwall, England because Oliver Cromwell discovered they helped Prince Charles escape. Separately, the family makes their way to the Maine coast and again starts up the successful fishery that they had in Cornwall. The story deals with relations between the white settlers and the Abenaki people and discusses the process of smoking and curing fish. For people interested in Maine specific historical aspects, the story mentions the Popham Colony of 1607, the building of the Virginia (Maine's First Ship), the fort in Pemaquid, and the old fishing/shipbuilding settlement of Machigonne, now Portland. Gertrude Robinson was born in New Hampshire, but was descended from an early Maine family, summered on Orr's Island, and felt like Maine was her real home. Many of her books were set in Maine as well. The Maine State Library archives have some correspondence of hers and I found this in a letter of hers, "No, I am not a native of Maine but I might as well be, since my mother was born in Old Wiscasset and took her children "back home" almost every summer. Now I have a shack of my own on Orr's Island, and get to it every summer as fast as I can when vacation days are at hand. MFS hosted RSU1 students for their final visit in the Hands On Our History series last week. This visit focused on the traditional skill of woodworking and included a chance for students to get aboard the pinnace Virginia. Originally scheduled for the fall of 2023, this program was made possible by a 2022-2023 grant from the Maine Community Foundation's Belvedere Traditional Handcrafts Program. The undertaking that is Maine's First Ship--the volunteer reconstruction of the 1607 pinnace Virginia + programming from history lectures to hands-on experiences for students--is only possible through a true team effort. We've showcased some businesses on the team and we also thank granting foundations. In addition, there are some family foundations who regularly support us and we have folks who recommend MFS for gifts from their Donor Advised Funds. In 2023 we had a local social group choose MFS as the recipient of their yearly giving, with members learning more about this project & each making a donation. We have had similar results from maritime, history, or woodworking groups who have brought their folks to tour and then individuals have become donors. It is all about spreading the word and sharing the love! We are grateful for this team and always willing to welcome new Member-Supporters. Learn more on the Support Us page of our website.
