A couple of Pete Seeger's seminal Folkways albums from the 1950s. Note that American Ballads credits Pete as "Peter" here, something that probably never happened again. Volume 3 of American Favorite Ballads seemingly came in the reddish shade. Pictured last is Seeger and Asch together in one of the few photos of both of them. Without the efforts of these two guys, the world would have much less traditional American music at its fingertips. What heroes! #folkmusic #folkwaysrecords #smithsonianfolkways #moeasch #peteseeger

Ethnic Folkways Library “Traditional Songs Of The Western Torres Straits, South Pacific”   Blame it on @slippery.el and @junie10 for putting me into a Folkways frenzy with their vinyl thirst trap postings and discussions. So I’m spending Victoria Day gardening to the accompaniment of Folkways “ethnic library”.   The first clip features a classic mid-00s minimal techno cut by Ricardo Villalobos. Just kidding. But it could have been. Now that 1990s revival is running on exhaust fumes I think that 2000s re-appreciation is just around the corner. And when it kicks into high gear I think Villalobos would do good sprinkling in some of those tastefully muted techno kicks under this one. A ritual dance music (‘kab’ they call it) of Melanesian tribes of southern islands sprinkled in between the northern coast of Australia and Papua New Guinea. The ethnomusicologist who compiled it (Wolfgang Laade) wrote that by 1964 when he did his field work the area’s traditional singing was disappearing. I’m guessing fully extinct by now. So you better enjoy the recordings. Cause there’s no more kab around.   The second song is like the best title that Dominick Fernow (a.k.a. Prurient a.k.a. Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement a.k.a. Vatican Shadow) never came up with - “Magic Turtle Hunting Song”. The tune lures turtle closer to the hunter’s canoe supposedly. I need to try it out when there are some turtles around.   #folkways #folkwaysrecords #folkwaysethiniclibrary #traditionalsongsofthewesterntorresstraitssouthpacific # #ethnomusicology #hermeticjournals #snowsovgethen

If it sounds like quacking ducks, make note that it could also be a chorus of Wood frogs. Just like how if it sounds like the plunk of a banjo string, it might actually be the call of a Green frog… ok, for the EAR Forest it might also be an actual banjo and a frog playing in the woods. Ooohh…. or maybe it's the sounds of 16 banjos, one coming out of each speaker along the EAR Forest path. Perhaps it's a multi-channel remix of Kermit serenading us with his banjo classic, the Rainbow Connection?!? This week the EAR Forest is thinking about the Smithsonian Folkways collection of frog sounds – an album of fieldwork recordings compiled and narrated in 1958 by the famous herpetologist, Charles Bogert. Worldwide, frogs and toads are in trouble and the Willamette Valley is no exception. Today the EAR Forest says “crec-ek” to the Pacific Chorus frog, dime-sized and electric green, living not so far away from us, just down the hill at Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge. @smithsonianfolkways @lc_nhc @bio_on_the_hill #CharlesBogert #naturesounds #fieldrecordings #frogsounds #folkwaysrecords #folkways75 #antidotetoindifference #kermit #Savethefrogs #oaksbottomwildliferefuge

Playing Civil War-era American folk songs today while my students work on posters for Emily Dickinson poetry presentations. This is the last day of “Teacher Appreciation Week,” which has been great. If I’m being honest, though, I’ve had a lot of moments this year when I’ve felt that the public school system is broken beyond repair. Today, however, I got some intelligent presentations out of these kids & (fingers crossed) hopefully they learned something about literature and the human condition. #publicschooltreasures #folkwaysrecords #teacherappreciationweek

🗣 The vinyl edition of Matmos’ ‘Return to Archive’ is officially here. 🗣 Halfway through The Science of Sound, an LP produced by Bell Laboratories and released by Folkways Records in 1958, an anonymous narrator proposes, “The sounds to which our ears respond may be classified as either music,”—pause for dramatic effect—“or noise.” We hear the gentle twinkle of a strummed harp, a wood thrush chirping into the morning air, and the sluggish honk of a tugboat, followed by our guide reflecting on how perspective impacts the way sounds are categorized. It is a moment of philosophical pondering nestled amongst scholarly presentations of audio phenomena, these scientists allowing themselves to peer momentarily at the infinite artistic capacities of their subject matter. Nearly seven decades later, the same voice floats above a digitally processed soundscape, providing a mission statement for the latest album by electronic music duo Matmos: “Music, or noise?” Released last year to commemorate our 75th anniversary, ‘Return to Archive’ is a whimsical, entrancing, and at times unsettling traversal of the world of sound. The album was constructed entirely from decades-old nature and science LPs found in the Folkways catalog, each track morphing its source material into something completely unexpected. Available now on digital, CD, and LP formats, packaged in the classic Folkways-style black tip-on jackets. 📦 ~ link in bio ~ 👂 Tracklist 1. “Good Morning Electronics” 2. “Injection Basic Sound” 3. “Mud-Dauber Wasp” 4. “Music or Noise?” 5. “Why?” feat. 🖤Lucinda Williams: Ramblin’ On My Mind. 1979. Folkway Records. Produced by Tom Royals. ‘Ramblin’ On My Mind’ is the debut 1979 studio album by Singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams.🖤 This album features a collection of traditional folk and country standards, arranged and performed by Williams, accompanied by John Grimaudo on his six string guitar. 💣🔥This has been my introduction to Williams - Southern blues and roots, warmly presented, and very easy to listen to. A few highlights include the title track, ‘Motherless Children’, ‘Make Me Down a Pallet on Your Floor’, ‘You’re Gonna Need That Pure Religion’ & ‘Disgusted’ just to name a few. 💐This definitely has me hankering for more of what Lucinda Williams has to offer as I hear she only gets better. This May Day, learn about the life and legacy of labor activist Eugene V. Debs (1855-1926) through an audio documentary written and produced by a young Bernie Sanders, released on Folkways Records in 1979. Debs dedicated his life to advocating for the rights of working-class people. He helped organize dozens of unions, including the American Railway Union, one of the nation’s first industrial unions, and was a founding member of the Industrial Workers of the World. A five-time Socialist Party presidential candidate, he received nearly one million votes in his 1920 campaign while imprisoned for his opposition to World War I. Summarizing his philosophy, Debs told his sentencing judge: “Years ago I recognized my kinship with all living things, and I made up my mind that I was not one bit better than the meanest on earth. I said then, and I say now, that while there is a lower class, I am in it; while there is a criminal element, I am of it; and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free.” Sanders recorded this album as part of his work with the American People’s Historical Society shortly before beginning his own political career, which would take him from the mayor’s office of Burlington, Vermont, in 1981 to the U.S. Senate in 2006, setting the stage for two presidential runs. 🔊 ‘Eugene V. Debs: Trade Unionist, Socialist, Revolutionary, 1855-1926’ is available to stream on digital platforms and can be purchased as a custom CD or digital download on our website and Bandcamp. “The lyrebird has always been recognized as the greatest mimic in the world, but recent studies have proved it to be a skilled musician and composer, as well.” So begins the 1966 Folkways LP The Lyrebird: A Documentary Study of Its Song, recorded by Peter Bruce and K.C. Halafoff over several years in the Sherbrooke Forest near Melbourne. From fervorous dance calls to the shrill trills of a courting song, this recording showcases the musical prowess of Australia’s famous ground-dwelling bird. Saxophonist John Zorn cited the album as an influence on his playing, and it was sampled by @xmatmosx on their new record Return to Archive. MUSIQUE AU MEG | n°68 – Music of the Idoma of Nigeria. Ediigwu sings the ancient songs of Oturkpo, Nigeria. Asch Mankind series AHM 4221. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Louise “Miss Lou” Bennett-Coverly (1919-2006) is hailed as the matriarch of Jamaican culture. As a renowned poet, performer, folklorist, writer, broadcaster, educator, and activist, Louise popularized the use of Jamaican Patois and instilled pride and respect in the dialect around the world. In the 1950s, Louise recorded two albums on Folkways Records: Children’s Jamaican Songs and Games (1957) and Jamaican Folk Songs (1954). The latter includes her influential rendition of “Day Dah Light,” a traditional work song sung by dock workers loading banana boats at night—a version of which was released by Harry Belafonte in 1956. “Anthology Of Brazilian Indian Music” (Ethnic Folkways Library - US 1962). As the title says, this album features several Indians groups in Brazil, the Karaja, Javahe, Kraho, Tukuna, Juruna, Suya, Trumai and Shukarramae. The most music loving Indians are the Kraho, they have women’s, men’s and youth choirs, and every morning before sunrise, the conductors start a dance in the middle of the village. The choirs join and make a crescendo until sun rises. Some groups make music for daily activities, some play just for pleasure. • #brazil #brazilian #brazilianindians #southamerica #brasil🇧🇷 #brasil #saopaulo #indians #nativeamerican #native #nativeamericans #indianamerican #kraho #folkways #folkwaysrecords #ethnicfolkwayslibrary #ethnomusicology #ethnographic #ethnography #fieldrecording #fieldrecordings #dustyfingers #cratedigging #vinyl #vinylcommunity #vinylcollection #vinylrecords #recordcollection #recordcollector

Remembering Marian Anderson, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on February 27, 1897. Anderson was a world-renowned contralto singer and civil rights icon who broke racial barriers in classical music and beyond. In 1939, she famously performed on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial before an integrated crowd of 75,000 after being denied a concert spot at DAR Constitution Hall because she was Black, while in 1955, she became the first Black soloist to sing with the Metropolitan Opera. Anderson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1963, the same year she released a record on Folkways chronicling the escapades of her beloved black cat, Snoopy. Written and composed by Frida Sarsen-Bucky and narrated and sung by Anderson, Snoopycat: The Adventures of Marian Anderson’s Cat Snoopy is an endearing, quirky children’s album filled with vivid descriptions of human-animal interaction and original songs and stories. You can listen at the link in our bio. 🐈‍⬛🎶 Marian Anderson, “Such an Inquisitive Kitty” #MarianAnderson #FolkwaysRecords

Born in Sumter SC, Nancy was a role model for young African American women and students in a time of unprecedented racism and oppressive women’s rights. As a teacher she refused to change the way she taught her students and only wanted to tell the truth about society instead of some sugar coated versions that were forced. She used the lens of her Black American experiences as a child growing up and becoming a woman to relay her versions of how things were on the streets. She helped and influenced so many American women and is a completely brilliant person that is funny, insightful, creative and more people should know about her. I’m proud to have found this album in SC and on the back(swipe to see) it looks like I found her mother’s personal copy signed by Nancy herself!! You are invited to take these poems, fold them neatly, and tuck them away in the corner of your soul reserved for food…….. #blackhistorymonth #nancydupree #folkwaysrecords #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylcollection #vinylcommunity #vinylcollector #vinylove #vinylrecords #vinyladdict #vinyljunkie #vinyllover #vinylgram #recordcollection #recordcollector #recordcollector #sumtersc #sc #spokenword #spokenwordpoetry #spokenwordvinyl #album #albums #albumcollection #albumoftheday #nowspinning #nowplaying #onmyturntable #vinil #vinilos #vinylcollectionpost

This is my favorite Barbara Dane album, which is also the first record The Chambers Brothers appeared on. It's an excellent blend of folk, jazz and r&b - only on Folkways. #vinylrecords #records #barbaradane #barbaradaneandthechambersbrothers #chambersbrothers #1960s #folkwaysrecords #folkways

I first picked up this New Lost City Ramblers record at a now defunct record store in Jacksonville, FL when I was 19 and I couldn't stop listening to it. I still can't. This song "Franklin D Roosevelt's Back Again" was originally written and recorded by Bill Cox in 1937. THAT would be an excellent record to have. Three cheers for FDR! #vinylrecords #records #newlostcityramblers #songsfromthedepression #greatdepression #folkways #folkwaysrecords #oldtimemusic #fdr #franklindroosevelt

Recorded on February 20, 1966, in New York City, the Read-In for Peace in Vietnam was a cultural event aimed at registering dissent against the Vietnam War and bearing witness to the viability of the American conscience. The evening featured around 30 writers and artists reading and performing works relevant to the anti-war effort, including Arthur Miller, William Melvin Kelley, Jules Feiffer, Ruby Dee, Ossie Davis, and Susan Sontag. “As writers, guardians of language, and as actors, those who practice the art of speaking with a human voice, we may and should conceive ourselves to have a vocational connection with the life of truth, that is, of seriousness,” Sontag says in a statement written for the meeting. 1968 pressing of “The Roots of Lightnin’ Hopkins” by Lightnin’ Hopkins originally released on Folkways Records in 1959. All killer no filler raw Texas blues from one of the best voices and guitars to do it. Sounds like you’re sitting in the same room as him. Big recommend. Record and Cover VG+. $40 takes it. #blues #lightninhopkins #bluesvinyl #texasblues #lightnin #folkwaysrecords #folkways #bluesrecords #bluesguitar #penitentiaryblues #record #recordcollection #music #vinyl #vinyljunkie #vinylcollection #instavinyl #wax #igvinyl #nowspinning #cratedigging #nowplaying #vinylforsale #recordsforsale

“The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” originally written for Peggy Seeger by Ewan MacColl in 1957, is considered one of the greatest love ballads of the twentieth century. In 1962, Peggy released a recording of the song on her and Ewan’s Folkways LP The New Briton Gazette, Vol. 2. It has been recorded by a number of artists over the years including Roberta Flack, whose version became a breakout international hit in 1972, winning GRAMMY Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Peggy has recorded the song multiple times throughout her career, with a 1983 version appearing on her album Folkways Years: 1955-1992: Songs of Love and Politics. Her most recent rendition was released last year, prompting her to reflect: “I’ve had two life partners, one male and one female, and I have three children and nine grandchildren. I’ve come to realise that the lyrics can be interpreted in so many ways. Ewan wrote the tune to mimic the heartbeat of someone wildly in love and I used to feel like a soaring bird when I sang this song. Now I’m grounded within it and that makes me happy.” Link in bio to listen. 🎞️ Photo courtesy of the Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections, Smithsonian Institution #PeggySeeger #EwanMacColl #FolkwaysRecords

Mary Lou Williams / Black Christ of the Andes, released in '64 by Folkways Records ... Another fine example of an album that recieved lots if criticism when it was released back in the day (being called "blues without its accent" and a "hokey prayer"), but is now a highly regarded piece of music. Mary Lou Williams herself explained it as "an attempt to heal the disparity between the gifted nature of the African-American and his tendency toward the worst kinds of sin". The result is a deeply spiritual record that is eerie and dark at times, beautiful and hopeful at others, combining jazz and blues with spirituals. This is the first album Mary Lou Williams released after a long musical hiatus (possibly triggered by the death of her good friend Charlie Parker), during which she converted to Catholicism and turned her own apartment into a halfway house for the poor and musicians struggling with addiction. Her name might not really be as well-known as it should be as she was a highly influential figure in jazz music, being a friend and mentor to the likes of Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Tadd Dameron, Bud Powell and Dizzy Gillespie and having composed and arranged for Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman. #marylouwilliams #folkwaysrecords records #vinyl #jazz #jazzmusic #nowspinning #nowplaying #nowspinningonvinyl #jazzvinyl #vinylcollection #vinylcommunity #igvinylcommunity #vinyl #recordcollection #recordcollector #jazzhistory #jazzvinyljunkie #raregroove #ilovediscogs #jazzvinylcommunity #rarejazz #cratedigger #igjazzvinyl #instavinyl

“Music Of Indonesia Vol.2” (Ethnic Folkways Library - US 1961). The album also came as a box set with both volumes but this is the separate C and D sides with a single sleeve. If anyone has volume 1… The second volume focuses on Sumatra, Ambon (Moslem dance), Bali (gamelan and Barong dance, cremation music). The sound I’ve heard a bit less here are from Sumatra with wedding music (the three instruments are ketchapi- a sort of ukulele, the serenar flute and a metal sooon against a glass bottle). • #indonesia #indonesian #bali #sumatra #indonesiamusic #southeastasia #southeastasian #folkways #folkwaysrecords #ethnicfolkwayslibrary #ronaldclyne #ethnic #ethnomusicology #henrycowell #ethnographic #ethnography #fieldrecording #fieldrecordings #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylrecords #vinylcommunity #cratedigging #cratediggers #cratedigger #instavinyl #diggin #diggininthecrates

Today marks the start of the Lunar New Year, or the Spring Festival, the most important holiday in China, also widely celebrated in South Korea, Vietnam, and the Asian diaspora. We’re ushering in the Year of the Dragon with the album Ellie Mao: An Anthology of Chinese Folk Songs, released on Folkways Records in 1963. Performed by singer Ellie Mao and pianist Anna Mi Lee, the songs on this album have been passed down orally across generations, sung in fields, festivals, and farmhouses from the Himalayas to the Pacific coast, including “Hanging Red Lanterns,” “My Love Is Like a Dragon in the Sky,” “Flower Drum Song,” and the New Year’s Day “Festive Song (Inner Mongolia).” 🐉 Tap the link in our bio to listen, and head to our website to learn more in the liner notes. #SILunarNewYear #ChineseNewYear #FolkwaysRecords
