Bluegrass legend, Red Allen was born in Pigeon Roost Hollow, KY on this day in 1930. 🎵 He migrated to Dayton, OH as a young man, and the “Allen” name has been synonymous with Industrial Strength Bluegrass ever since. In addition to historic recordings with The Osborne Brothers, his own albums featured early contributions from Frank Wakefield, Bill Emerson, David Grisman, and more. Remembering Daniel Moses Barker who was born on this day in 1909 but passed away on March 13, 1994. He was an American jazz musician, vocalist, and author from New Orleans. According to Wikipedia, “He was a rhythm guitarist for various bands of the day, including Cab Calloway, Lucky Millinder and Benny Carter throughout the 1930s. One of Barker’s earliest teachers in New Orleans was fellow banjoist Emanuel Sayles, with whom he recorded. Throughout his career, he played with Jelly Roll Morton, Baby Dodds, James P. Johnson, Sidney Bechet, Mezz Mezzrow, and Red Allen. He also toured and recorded with his wife, singer Blue Lu Barker. From the 1960s, Barker’s work with the Fairview Baptist Church Brass Band was pivotal in ensuring the longevity of jazz in New Orleans, producing generations of new talent, including Wynton and Branford Marsalis who played in the band as youths. The College Concert of Pee Wee Russell and Henry Red Allen (Impulse!, 1967). This album captures traditional jazz veterans Russell on clarinet and Allen on trumpet live at MIT, with a modern rhythm section of Steve Kuhn on piano, Charlie Haden on bass and Marty Morell on drums. The headliners aren’t out of place: Don Ellis once described Allen as “the most avant-garde trumpeter in New York” and Russell covered a pair of Thelonious Monk tunes on an earlier piano-less Impulse date with Marshall Brown and also played with Monk at Newport. Here, they cover “Blue Monk” coaxing out more of the old-time feel of the song. They also tackle John Lewis’ "2° East, 3° West,” “Body and Soul,” “I Want a Little Girl” and two Russell original blues. Great playing by both masters, Allen sings a few times and Kuhn sprinkles some cutting edge playing into his solos. I have been drawing a lot lately but I always forget to post it here. I even ended up bundling all the art I do in the blog or it would take me months to post it all. My summer break ends today, back to work I go. I still haven't finished my newest cosplay, there is a few things to fix and the one button also I have a new wig and want to attempt to get the hairline done (the other one will stay in ponytail style), I think with my expierence in working with doll wigs I easily could do that. I spend almost 14 days of my summer break with sewing, first dolls then cosplay, somewhere I stuffed in drawing, having bday, a trip to my friends and ...?! it has been a great time but it went by too fast. Red Allen (1908–1967) was an American jazz trumpeter and vocalist whose playing has been claimed as the first to fully incorporate the innovations of Louis Armstrong and to develop an emphasis on phrasing. Allen was born in the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans, Louisiana, the son of the bandleader Henry Allen Sr. He was playing professionally by 1924 with the Excelsior Brass Band and the jazz dance bands of Sam Morgan, George Lewis, and John Casimir. After playing on riverboats on the Mississippi River, he went to Chicago in 1927 to join King Oliver’s band. Allen was offered a recording contract with Victor Records and went to New York City in 1929 where he joined the Luis Russell Orchestra and was a featured soloist until 1932. By 1937, Russell’s band was being fronted by Louis Armstrong. Allen seldom received any solo space on recordings with Armstrong, but was prominently featured in the band’s live performances. Allen continued making many recordings under his own name, with Fats Waller and Jelly Roll Morton, and as an accompanist to such vocalists as Victoria Spivey and Billie Holiday. After a short stint with Benny Goodman, Allen began to lead his own band at the Famous Door in Manhattan. He then toured with the band around the US into the late 1950s. In December 1957, Allen appeared with Pee Wee Russell on the television program Sound of Jazz. In 1959, he made his first tour of Europe when he joined Kid Ory’s band. He led the house band at New York’s Metropole Cafe from 1954, until the club ceased its jazz policy in 1965.

This is live set is from the opening date of the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival, which coincided with Louis Armstrong’s birthday on July 4. The Red Allen band paid tribute to “Pops” with a rousing full-on Dixieland set, including boisterous performances of Armstrong’s “Struttin’ with Some Barbecue” and the anonymously-penned (though on the label attributed to the fictitious “Joe Primrose”) “St. James Infirmary.” Allen then brings on two well-known trombonists, Teagarden and Kid Ory. Teagarden sits in with the band on “China Boy” by Dick Winfree and Phil Boutelje, and Spencer Williams’ classic “Basin Street Blues.” Then the septuagenarian Ory comes on to play one of his own songs, the standard “Muskrat Ramble.” The album closes out with all three trombonists on stage with the band for another New Orleans perennial, “High Society,” by Porter Steele. In a 2-star AllMusic review, Scott Yanow writes: “When confronted with a variety of his alumni from his past at the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival, Louis Armstrong preferred instead to play his standard show with his regular group. The veterans had their own separate set, and that is what is heard on this LP. Trumpeter Red Allen, trombonist J.C. Finally getting to record the Vietnam War episode today. It's gonna be a bummer, after sorting through a lot of stuff I found that most of the songs I liked and that weren't ignorantly patriotic were about death, loss, and the reality of warfare. Those are the things I think should be sung about when talking about war though, especially a war like Vietnam. It was unpopular for good reason, over 50,000 Americans died, hundreds of thousands physically wounded, and who knows the number of how many were mentally injured coming home to a country that treated people with mental health concerns as "crazy." As I've mentioned before the Vietnam War was in a sweet spot for music. Officially taking place from 1955-1975 the war covered a place in time where music was rapidly evolving and rising in popularity amount nearly every genre that's now a mainstay. People in every genre had something to say about the war and if you really wanna read about that I'd recommend checking out Justin Brummer's great database of songs in the Vietnam War Song Project on rateyourmusic.com. Of course I'll be just playing country songs with maybe a bit of folk snuck in. This song is one about loss and I thought I'd share it because I think it's good, I'm playing it in the show, and I liked the note on the sleeve. With a cover like this and the disc in great condition, I couldn't leave it behind. Nice stuff, somewhat in the vein of early Duke and Louis Armstrong.
