#thumbsupthursday 𝚄𝚙𝚍𝚊𝚝𝚎 𝚏𝚛𝚘𝚖 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚏𝚒𝚎𝚕𝚍 ‼️ The Motagua Spiny-tailed Iguana (𝘊𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘢 𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘴) project, funded in part by IIF, is making great progress in the Motagua Valley, Guatemala. One aspect of this year’s work is to monitor the population and the iguanas' responses to high temperatures during the hottest months. The impact of climate change on dry forests can cause habitat loss, food shortages, and a decline in iguana numbers. It is vital to assess the real-time impact, physical consequences, and potential losses, and to look for ways to prevent or mitigate these impacts and reinforce conservation efforts. The Project Palearis team is gathering data by using camera traps and has been widening the area where the cameras are set. Videos from the cameras have captured interesting behavioral patterns—including how the iguanas move throughout their habitat and use resources—which have important implications for prioritizing habitats for their protection. One important resource is the Gray Ghost Organ Pipe Cactus (𝘚𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘶𝘴 𝘱𝘳𝘶𝘪𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘶𝘴). The Motagua Spiny-tailed Iguana is sometimes called the Organ Pipe Iguana, because of its mutually beneficial relationship with this tall, columnar cactus. The cactus provides shelter for the iguanas, especially when the older columns dry out and leave hollows for the iguanas to hide in. And the fruits of the cactus are a main food source for the iguanas—the fruits are called “tunas” in Spanish, and are also used by humans to make jams, jellies, candy, and drinks. The iguanas aid the cactus by consuming the fruit and scattering the seeds in the dry forest. It has been shown that passing through the digestive tract of the iguana increases the seeds' germination percentage, making the Motagua Spiny-tailed Iguana a key species for dry forest conservation in Guatemala. My name is Greta Hernández. I am a Panamanian student pursuing a biology degree. I have worked with a variety of animals, from armored rats on the Panamanian island of Escudo de Veraguas to scavenging insects and vultures in Costa Rica. 🐍Rattlesnake season in California is heating up along with the weather!🐍 Rattlesnakes are a fascinating and dangerous part of the California landscape. Although deaths from snake bites are exceptionally rare, it’s better not to increase your potential risk of being one of those unfortunate few. Luckily, Amigo Environmental, LLC's biologists have you covered from in-field safety coverage to classroom trainings. Thanks to our partnerships with ERM and Southern California Edison (SCE), Jorge Guzman recently led a rattlesnake safety awareness training for SCE. Jorge’s safety tips for handling these unique creatures? ▪ Always look before putting your hands and feet in a new location! ▪ Be aware of your surroundings at all times. ▪ Stay on trails. ▪ Avoid tall grass, weeds, and heavy brush. ▪ Use a walking stick to rustle surrounding shrubs; especially where the ground is not clear. ▪ Look for concealed snakes before picking up rocks and wood. ▪ Check carefully around stumps or logs before sitting. ▪ GO WITH A PARTNER! ▪ Carry a cell phone or radio. ▪ Seek immediate medical attention if bitten by a rattlesnake. A team of our geologists spent the past week in the Four Corners region to map the Cortez quadrangle as part of the STATEMAP program! The goals of mapping this quadrangle include: 🪨 Gain a better understanding of the stratigraphy and depositional systems of the Dakota Group and Mancos Shale 🕰️ Collect samples to determine ages and regional context since many units have never been dated ⛰️ Describe previously unmapped landslide, rockfall, and debris flow deposits, as well as ancient river systems ⚒️ Assess folds and faults 🏠 Clarify which units could be important for water resources in the area and which could pose a hazard to future development This map area crosses boundaries of the Ute Mountain Tribal Lands, BLM, National Park Service, and private land. I’m approaching my 5th summer in the PNW as I look back on my 10 year anniversary of a career in federal land management. This was neither my original Plan A nor B nor probably even C, but I love to walk through open doors and am glad to all the “yes”es that brought me to where I am today. It’s complicated work, but I take the commitment to tribal sovereign nations, correcting the errors of the past, and doing good science for future archaeologists very seriously. Plus I love beautiful places, and I high key rock the uniform. The two Salmon Story Boards behind me were created by Jewell James (Lummi Nation) and the Sxwo’le Reef Net Captain pole was made by Charles Elliott (T’sartlip, First Nation, Vancouver Island, Canada). The nose-horned viper, la Vipera ammodytes 🔥 Nel nostro recente viaggio, la prima tappa è stata la Val Rosandra, ultima valle italiana prima del confine con la Slovenia. Questa valle presenta pietraie molto scoscese in cui vivono numerosi rettili, tra cui la vipera dal corno. Questa specie, a causa degli ambienti in cui vive, spesso poco accessibili e che non permettono grande mobilità, non è tra le più facili da trovare in territorio italiano. Durante la nostra permanenza in val Rosandra, sembravamo essere poco baciati dalla fortuna a causa della temperatura costantemente attorno ai 10°C, il vento e sporadiche pioggie. Nonostante ciò, la nostra determinazione ci ha premiati durante un tiepido sole alle 19 di sera, quando iniziavamo a pensare di ritirarci per la stanchezza, complice il lungo viaggio e la giornata a camminare. Questa è stata la prima di molte grandi gioie del viaggio🫶. After the long-awaited rains, we've noticed a surge in animal activity around one of our natural water points here on ORKCA HQ. To capture this, our dedicated team set up a camera trap. Throwback to some of my fieldwork. We did two sites in a day. The first site was probably one of the worst reefs on the island I´ve seen. Almost no corals and pretty sad place overall. If this is the future of coral reefs, NO THANKS! So my hopes weren´t very high for a our next divesite which was just on the other site of the bay. FALSE KILLER WHALES, Sydney, Australia, 14 May 24 When marine mammal surveys off Gamay/Botany with the @gamayrangers turns into a first for me- seeing false killer whales on a boat! This is not an everyday occurrence off Sydney. This sighting is special. After speaking with @dronesharkapp, it never crossed my mind that I’d see them. It was by chance during our surveys that we happened to spot something in the distance. The second up confirmed it and my excitement levels hit the roof! False killer whales are actually dolphins. We don’t know a lot about them in Australian waters. They are super fast and tricky to photograph. They are known to be found in small to large groups up to 60 or so. Smaller groups like this may consist of closely related individuals. They’re big, growing up to 5-6metres long. This sighting contributes to our knowledge of their presence in Australian waters. For our international audience, the @gamayrangers are a local indigenous ranger group monitoring sea country. We are working together to monitor marine mammals in our blue backyard. The last time I saw false killer whales was last year in July from the shore. Such an incredible day, thank you pacha mumma! You can see our happy smiles in the last snap. Some clues as to the next adventure! Hippos and mokoros … 🛶🦛 . I was idly flicking through my profile the other day to see which photos and I had and hadn’t posted, and was completely struck to realise how utterly unrepresentative of my life my social media presence is! Just by looking at my page you’d think I was out in the bush damn near all the time … . The reality is far from that. The vast majority of my time I spend in my little flat working on film scripts and sorting footage, or else i’m closeted in the library either going through endless rewrites of academic papers I’m working on, or ploughing through R codes! As I write, I’m procrastinating against creating a raster file for GIS of the rivers of my study site😑 . It’s worth reminding onself that the lives we present on social media, especially as conservationists, typically belies the endless, monotonous, hard work behind the wildlife down the lens, and offers a glamorised version of a career and lifestyle that is at times challenging, emotionally draining, and mentally exhausting. I never post photos or stories real time from the field, both because I find it distracts from the wild - and a lack of wifi!
