Ní neart go cut le chéile! (There’s no strength without unity!) I spent a lovely morning collaborating with all students at @tombrackns in County Wexford today. Before starting the creative process, each class shared their experiences in nature. Apparently, few squirrels have been dropping pinecones on children’s heads! We all felt the softest hairs on ‘blankets’ which sycamore leaves grow in. We also talked about Fractal geometry presented in Fern leaves and how tiny moss habitats support the safety and the eco-system of woodlands. The creative process was entirely spontaneous. No pre-conceived designs were available. Ideas were proposed by students first. Then, I suggested few ways to realise their ideas. We collectively made decisions and created a layer at a time. “I feel peaceful and calm.” “This is so relaxing.” “I like the smell.” are some of the feedback we received during the creative process. In this collaborative project, I shared the teachings I received from Ainu - the indigenous people of Hokkaido where I am from. It is about sustainable ways to forage natural materials. I am grateful of having the opportunity to pass on what I learned as a young person and what I consider so important these days. I found the above quote in Irish, Ní neart go cut le chéile! So excited to be showing new work by Carolina Aguirre at Palmer Gallery in a couple of weeks! Carolina’s multi-disciplinary practice is rooted in the quality and feel of natural materials. In the paintings, the mineral sheen of Sumi ink is enhanced by the gloss of shellac (made from the female Lac beetle). In contrast, the smoky, grainy texture of charcoal and the chalkiness of Gofun (made from crushed up seashells) add coarseness to certain areas - creating an overall feel of geological dissection. These materials are fixed to wooden panels, forming primarily abstract compositions in which human figures float in and out the smoke. The resulting works are thoughtful, telluric pieces that have an ancient quality. Carolina will be part of Land, Sea, Air - a group exhibition opening @palmer.gallery on May 23rd. Fishing gear that is abandoned or lost at sea is known as #ghostgear because it continues to trap and endanger wildlife long after its original lifespan. It’s one of the biggest threats to marine life and washes up on our beaches every day. We will be upcycling this material into colourful and durable pots to use in your home. Come and create something to treasure from trash washed up on our beaches. This is a relaxed small group workshop where we can take time out for ourselves to be creative, have a drink and a chat while we craft, meet new people and make connections with like-minded folks. @bottleandjug is a craft beer bottle shop and natural wine specialist, supporting indie producers - and creatives. It’s an all round lovely place to hang out. The bar will be open throughout the evening so we can enjoy a glass of something delicious while we craft.
