The CSS Neuse Civil War Museum, in downtown Kinston, is home to the remains of a steam-powered Confederate States Navy ironclad from the Civil War era. The CSS Neuse is one of only four ironclad wrecks ever recovered (two union and two confederate). When Union troops occupied Kinston in March 1865, the Neuse was burned by its crew, resulting in a large explosion in her port bow, which sank the vessel. After nearly a century, the remaining lower hull of the ironclad was discovered and then raised in 1963. 15,000 artifacts were recovered from the ship, which gave insight into the shipbuilding and naval warfare. The museum offers further insight into the ship’s history, life during the civil war era, and the ship’s recovery process. Exhibits also reveal the history of Burnside’s Expedition, Battles in Kinston, and the end of the war in North Carolina. Located near the museum, is the World’s only full-size replica of a confederate ironclad. This replica can be viewed both inside and out, with historical markers and information displayed at the site. La Regia Marina se presentó en Barcelona, el 17 de mayo de 1888, con sus mejores barcos de guerra; de entre ellos destacaban su buque insignia el Italia y su casi gemelo el Lepanto, tan solo distinguibles por su numero de chimeneas, cuatro chimeneas el Lepanto y seis el Italia. Estos dos acorazados fueron los mayores presentes aquellos días previos y durante la inauguración de la Exposición Universal y, aunque no pudieron fondear dentro del puerto, su diseño y apariencia no dejaban indiferentes a nadie con unas siluetas claramente distinguibles desde la costa. El de la imagen es el Lepanto, que fue construido 1887 por los astilleros Cantiere navale fratelli Orlando. Tenía un desplazamiento de 15.600 toneladas con una eslora de 127 metros. Era propulsado por cuatro máquinas a vapor de 15.790 IHP. que le daban 18,4 nudos de velocidad. Estaba armado con 4 cañones de 432 mm., 8 de 152 mm., 4 de 119 mm. y cuatro tubos lanzatorpedos de 356 mm. El Lepanto quedó asignado a la Primera División del Escuadrón de Reserva y vio poco o ningún combate, su vida marinera quedó relegada a la instrucción como buque escuela de artillería. The Sachsen class were called “armored corvettes”, but were four central citadel ironclads, the first steam-only capital ships built by the Imperial German Navy in 1874-1883, with any other innovations. Named Sachsen, Bayern, Württemberg, and Baden they were designed for a coastal defense network, from fortified bases, to break up an enemy blockade or landing attempt. Their construction was the result of the French Navy blockade back in the war of 1870. They were Armed with six 26 cm (10.2 in) guns and could manage ironclads if needed. During their active decades they serviced in training exercises and cruises and were comprehensively rebuilt in the late 1890s, although retired before WWI broke out, between 1902 and 1910. Cinco fueron las naciones de las principales potencias europeas del momento que desplazaron a Barcelona sus escuadras para la inauguración de la Exposición Universal de 1888. En total fueron 71 los buques de guerra de Austria (8), Francia (16), Reino Unido (11), Italia (17) y España (13). Además de estas grandes flotas también hubo una tímida representación de Alemania, Estados Unidos, Holanda, Portugal, cada uno con un buque y Rusia con dos. La primera en llegar fue la austriaca y un como hoy lo hizo la francesa, dividida en dos divisiones, con el acorazado Colbert a la cabeza al mando del vicealmirante Amet, quien también estaba al mando de la Escuadra del Mediterráneo. La imagen de hoy es para el Colbert, un acorazado construido en el Arsenal de Brest en 1877. Desplazaba 8.617 toneladas a plena carga con una eslora de 101 metros. En 1892 fue asignado al Escuadrón de la Reserva y causó baja en 1900, siendo vendido para desguace en 1909. As already stated, the battleship as drawn by Chief Engineer Huin was marked by having a relatively low freeboard, fully protected by armor. However this also meant that some facilities and crew accomodations in the former upper level of the hull should be moved somewhere else. ~ Sooo... This arrived last weekend and after approx 1,5 years waiting, it's finally here! 😍 Can't find the words to properly describe the excitement I have for this! I absolutely love this video game and as soon as I learned there were a kickstarter for a boardgame of it, I had to pledge! At the time I discovered it, it was already over, but fortunately, they opened up for late pledges and as soon as I learned about that, I pledged and ordered it right away! 😁 It's the first time I support something on Kickstarter and I'm excited to try this out and see how it works as an actual boardgame and not a digital video game! Last week I sat for hours and put most cards in their protective sleeves and I sorted everything as instructed and as soon as I'm a bit more clear in my head, I will sit down and try to learn how to play it and I can't wait! 🤩 Best thing is that you can play it alone AND cooperatively with up to three more people, which definitely will be interesting to try out! On a rough day not too long ago I had an after work phone conversation with my sister. We discussed how the work day had been. For the both of us. We both kinda acted like it was still fine. "On 29 September 1911, Italy declared war on the Ottoman Empire in order to seize Libya. At the time, Sicilia and her two sisters were assigned to the Training Division, along with the old armored cruiser Carlo Alberto, with Sicilia serving as the flagship of Rear Admiral Raffaele Borea Ricci D'Olmo. On 3–4 October, Sicilia and her sisters were tasked with bombarding Fort Sultanje, which was protecting the western approach to Tripoli. The ships used their 6-inch guns to attack the fort to preserve their stock of 13.5-inch shells. By the morning of the 4th, the ships' gunfire had silenced the guns in the fort, allowing landing forces to go ashore and capture the city. These included a contingent led by Sicilia's captain.
