“The Three” (1962) by Barnett Newman. Photographed @seattleartmuseum in November 2020. Steve Albini was born in 1962 and died unexpectedly this week. Both Newman and Albini were artists to the Nth. Devoted to the craft and wary of the commerce required to keep the craft going. Each inspired devotion and loathing. (Newman’s color field paintings were literally attacked with knives multiple times.) I made the “Burned the Field” playlist in honor of Albini. Seven hours of music he arranged, engineered, and created. I would love to go back in time and hang out with him as he was just starting to figure out his music sensibility in Missoula. Alma Thomas Earth Sermon-Beauty, Love and Peace Acrylic on canvas 1971 Hirshhorn Museum @hirshhorn Alma Thomas was an instigator of firsts: the first fine arts graduate of Howard University (in 1924) and, at the age of eighty, the first Black woman to hold a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. In between, Thomas was a significant fixture of an energetic art scene in Washington, DC, where she also worked as a public-school teacher for close to thirty years. Sky Light and Earth Sermon—Beauty, Love and Peace both date from the era of Thomas’s Whitney exhibition and demonstrate the liveliness and syncopation of her best-known, beloved, and exuberant abstraction (a style she came to later in life, only after her retirement from teaching). Thomas approached color as the foundational element of her work, and often it was nature that served as muse: “Man’s highest aspirations come from nature. A world without color would seem dead. Color is life. Light is the mother of color. Light reveals to us the spirit and living soul of the world through colors.” Ultimately, Thomas insisted upon art—and abstraction—as a manifestation of beauty and joy, a place to find solace and rejoice.
