Quilting can be incredibly satisfying when it goes smoothly and all the layers get stitched and sandwiched neatly. Sometimes though this doesn’t always happen. There are two choices, 1) to leave it and 2) fix it, if possible. I have found while quilting this quilt that the bigger pieces of jeans are stretching which means sometimes I’m getting lumps of fabric, especially at seams where it butts up against an already stitched line. It’s a bit of a pain to stop what I’m doing to fix something, but I’m happier when I’ve taken the time to do it. These pictures are 1. what I found happening when quilting along a long edge - the top fabric had gotten pushed and stretched and the bottom fabric was not leading to a big lump. 2. Unpicking the seam 3. The side without stitching 4. Restitching from both edges of the block towards the middle to ease in the stretch. 5. The finished re-stitched block with threads buried 6. Studio Cat getting comfortable 7. My client Donna is focusing on finishing UFOs that she pieced many years ago. This is the latest one that she brought to be quilted. Due to the busyness of the prints she knew the quilting wouldn’t show much. Glide Lavender was her choice for the top as it blended nicely with all the colors. Another customer told me about the Missouri Quilt Company ‘Two Step’ quilt and how fun it was so I decided it would be a great way to showcase these fabrics. I used 1 FQ Bundle for the central piece and chose grey for the first border and the Zoom fabric for the second border. I love how it turned out and I think it will be great for a little person who doesn’t like any florals! 😂 The quilt top on the back wall is the ‘Heavy Machines’ Panel with the second border from the same collection. The first border is ‘CAT Building Crew’ from Riley Blake. ‘Twin negatives’ consists of two quilts. They were inspired greatly, almost copied, by the quilt ‘Oversized Nine Patch’ attributed to Ollie Mae Whitley, as seen on page 35 in Roderick Kirakofe’s book ‘Unconventional and Unexpected’. The initiative for this piece came with a promt in @quiltfolk ‘s 2024 BOM (with the same name as the book), to remake the quilt on the book’s cover. This is not the answer to that promt, but searching for another quilt with a ‘simple’ construction I just felt a very strong compulsion to make these two! . Sometime last year I visited the exhibition Ausser Gebrauch (out of use) at the Historical Museum @histmuseumbs here in Basel. The exhibition showed a wealth of objects no longer in use in our modern times. I purchased the book that accompanied the exhibit and keep reading in it from time to time. It's a treasure chest of re- and new discoveries. As you know I love to use discharged shirts in some of my quilts. Often the shirts are in excellent condition except for cuffs and collars. Did you know that there was a time when (rich) people had boxes of shirt collars? They would change collars instead of whole shirts. Saving on laborious laundry work and prolonging lifespan of the shirt. I read that the collars were practical but uncomfortable to wear. Same applied to cuffs. I wonder how all this would have influenced my quilting practice if I had lived back then. So I didn’t make an error in cutting the pieces, it seems I missed a step in the instructions where I have to trim these blocks to 4.5” squares 🤦🏻♀️ I always follow the “measure twice, cut once” rule. I need to be better at reading all the steps in the instructions! Lol.
