Cornflower. This is a perennial Cornflower that grows happily around my garden. The Cornflower has many health benefits. It is a diuretic, aids digestion and is an anti-inflammatory. It can also be used to aid a good nights sleep. The Cornflower's main uses are to cure eye ailments. As herbalists, we look at the appearance of the plant to have an idea of the part of the human body that the plant was created to treat. In herbalism, we call this The Doctrine of Signatures. If you look at the appearance of the flower, you can see its resemblance to an eye. Cornflower can be used to treat conjunctivitis, puffy eyes and dark circles and can be given to anyone suffering with weak eye conditions. Magically and spiritually the plant again works with the eyes. But in this case, the Cornflower can cleanse and enhance the third eye. When the flower is dried it can be infused in a tea and can be drunk to aid one receiving visions and prophetic dreams. Cornflower is a very protective plant and can protect a person against psychic attack. Cultivating relationships with plant spirits 🍃 This was something one of your local tricksters, Robin (he/they), had special difficulty with at first. They tried learning associations from books, but it felt hollow. Even the most potent herbs of witchcraft felt strangely empty when he got them from local witch shops. It wasn’t until your other local trickster, Loki (he/him), taught them about the life of plants that a genuine connection started to form. Robin had only met many of the herbs of witchcraft in their commercial form: dried, ground or chopped, and completely unrecognizable from their original form. Loki taught Robin to begin with the living plant rather than a book. The lessons a plant can teach are in the lessons it learns in its life. What conditions does it thrive in, and what ones stunt its growth? How does it ensure its survival? What habitat does it prefer and why? We bring this philosophy to every work we make; it’s the foundation of both Loki and Robin’s relationship with plant spirits now. The photos above are of a maple tree we came across. It had recently lost a large branch and offered the leaves, seeds, and flowers on it to incorporate into our work. It was the first time Robin had seen the flowers of the Maple and how seeds sprout from them. Violas, or wild Violets, are such mystical and vibrant little flowers. I was lucky enough to be graced by their presence a few days ago when I found myself in a field near a quiet trail in the countryside. Just when I gave up on even finding any this year, I stopped in my tracks when I saw one lone flower off in a distance. And when you find one, you are almost certain to find more! We kept finding patch after patch, picking just a few from each spot. The energetics of these flowers are like none I’ve experienced before. So elegantly vibrant and mysterious at the same time. Underneath the Earth, these plants spread by rhizomes and form resilient colonies. Violets are ruled by the planet Venus. The season of Taurus is when they are usually in peak bloom. They are naturally cooling and demulcent, which makes them perfect for coughs, fiery sore throats, and heated tempers.🤯They are also good for stimulating the lymphatic system. I am currently making an extraction of these Violets in alcohol. Once this is finished, I’ll add organic raw honey to it and make a lovely and colorful wild violet elixir. The tree is near a road, so I can’t spend time with it the way I’d like to :( I guess its obvious that I’ve been on a cottonwood kick... there’s just something about it. I worked on this carving for 10 hours straight the first day, and it literally never felt like work. Cascading down a shaded cliff face, this beautiful blue wildflower caught my eye as I was biking with my husband along the Montour Trail. I thought perhaps they were a species of bluebell, due to their lovely hue and the way some of the flowers hung like bells from the top of their stem. However, a quick internet search revealed their true identity: Polemonium reptans, commonly called Jacob’s Ladder. Named for the biblical tale in the book of Genesis, where Jacob dreams of a ladder connecting Heaven to Earth, this native plant is considered a symbol of spiritual ascension and the connection between the Divine and humankind. It also appears similarly in Norse mythology as a bridge between the mortal world and the realm of the gods. In medieval Europe it was believed to have magical powers and was used in spells and love potions. Jacob’s Ladder is pollinator friendly, medicinal, and edible. The plant has been used in folk medicine to treat respiratory and digestive issues, as well as skin rashes and snake or insect bites. Leaves and shoots make nice additions to salads and stir fries, while flowers are lovely for tea or garnish. It is also useful for creating a hair treatment that is similar to black dye. Jacob’s Ladder is often a companion of wild geranium and columbine, creating a colorful wildflower tapestry amongst the green. Jacob’s Ladder is also known as Greek Valerian, Charity, Ladder to Heaven, American Great Valerian, and Make-Bate.

Rose. Ohhhh, I was anticipating this one for a while. I love Rose so much. She is such a gentle yet fierce spirit. Her healing powers and numerous, and so are her magical ones. Rose has been my friend for a long time, and she has a way of reaching out to me, like any friend would, when I need her most. At the beginning of my work with plant spirits when I was still grappling with whether all of this was real and whether or not my perception of plants was some wild fantasy, I was having a particularly difficult day. EARTH DAY There is so much magic in this earth we call home - so much healing available to not just our skin from incredible natural oils and extracts, but also healing for our psyche and spirit as well, particularly in the form of flower essences - the beautiful energy of the plants and flowers. From seed to spirit, our products contain healing from the earth, including all healing parts of a plant, from the oil from it’s seed to the esoteric healing from it’s spirit. Plants have so much to share with us. But this gift from the plants, from the earth, is not to be taken lightly. We must live with a deep respect, care, and reverence for the earth and for the nature around us. It is the earth that supports and sustains us. And we must support the earth in return. Earth Day is a reminder to us of the importance of caring for our earth and doing all we can to support her. This year the theme is ‘Planet vs. Plastic’. We use glass bottles for our packaging, with minimal use of plastics in our pumps and droppers. We ask that you please recycle these or re-use them. We use zero plastics in our postal packaging, we even use plant based sticky tape. Apart from the use of solid plastics, liquid plastics in the form of phthalates are a huge concern not just for the environment but also for our health. The use of phthalates is very common in skincare products. Apart from phthalates, many products from top-selling cosmetic brands contain microplastics which are added to shampoo, scrubs and sunscreens to add texture. These ingredients are something that we can all make a conscious choice to avoid. Stick to brands that truly are 100% natural. You may need to read the ingredients list here, even brands that claim to be all natural, unfortunately often aren’t. On this Earth Day, we invite you to sign a petition for a Global Plastics Treaty that calls for a 60% reduction of all fossil fuel-based plastic production by 2040. It looks as if I will have to leave the plant allies I've made at this locale behind. As Summer approaches a move is on the way. In the next few months I may have to find a new assortment of local plants to work with. Some of the plants here I will certainly miss are: Confederate Violet. Skin softening, Violet is both deliciously edible and topical. Narrow Leaf Sundrop, reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Makes a lovely face wash. Bellflower, kept around mirrors for self esteem and worth. Periwinkle, Great for spiritual protections, this and the others I wish I could have stocked up on. Every year when these tiny blue flowers bloom, my heart is filled with joy. There is something so special about these tiny blue flowers and their delicate nature that speaks to me. This year too my heart smiled when I saw them. They bring messages to me about the importance of being gentle with myself. This winter has been full of deep teachings and many important lessons are still unfolding. So even though there is an eagerness to bloom, create and grow, I also need to allow space for slowness and calmness. Forget-Me-Nots. This year my orchard is full of Forget-Me-Nots. I've never seen so many. It's so nice to lay down amongst them. They are such tiny flowers, so you need to get real close to study them. This flower has ancient mythological tales of lost love. One tale told the story of a Medieval Knight who tried picking Forget-Me-Nots from a riverbank for his lover only to be swept away in the river to his death. His final words, "Don't forget me" spoke in the breeze. The Forget-Me-Not flower has forever been a symbol of Rememberance of Lost Love. So tragic in so many ways. I always feel sad when I see them. These flowers always serendipitously seed themselves under my son's tree that I planted in his memory. His plum tree will be 15 years old this year as he would be if he was still here with me. The Forget-Me-Nots remind me of his presence in spirit and I see them as a message from him. No, my boy.
