We're doing some restructuring! In order to cover our operating costs, we're switching to a sliding-scale for our classes. The money we make goes straight back into the community, as all of our board members are volunteers. However, we're still very much committed to making spirituality accessible to anyone and everyone. If you aren't able to give financially, we do barter with books, tools, and other supplies for the library. We also have a work-study program! Spend a couple of hours helping us build the library or one of the other projects we have going, and those hours go toward any classes and workshops you want to attend! ✍🏼I wrote a poem about my insides. I named it “An Ode to Hard, Dark Nights.” I shared it with a friend (@steve.can.draw). He said it was very good, & that I should submit it to The Bright Wings Contest ☀️🪽with @ekstasismagazine & @makersandmystics, which are my absolute favorite purveyors of faithful creatives. I read there were 700 entries. I had zero hopes or expectations. They announced the winner, a stunning poem that wasn’t mine. I wished her light & love & thought, “Maybe next year.” But then… 🥇Then there was this other award, The Audience Choice Award, which I like even better because I’m a woman of the people. I woke up bleary-eyed one morning earlier this week to see my poem was nominated. After the shock wore off, I shared & asked you all to read & vote… & BOY DID YOU!!! 🙌🏼 You showed up in such a big-hearted way that this poor poet won!!! 🎉 What??? Thank you 1 million times for reading my poem about my insides as I fought severe illness & depression & saying “Me too! This right here! I have been you in my own way.” Friend, I see YOU! And I have been YOU, too—at the very end of myself, the end of my rope. Done. Finished. Begging for my end in hard, dark nights. But what a gift they have been. To go dark. To be found. To slowly be breathed back to life by the God of the universe—meeting me in a time outside of time, leaving His holy mark on my soul’s map. To know I survived. All I can say is, “Wow, God!” All I can say is, “Thank YOU!” ✨ If you find yourself in the midst of your hard, dark night, please know this: it’s not the end—no, it’s not the end. 🦉 Something very beautiful & strange has happened. And when I say strange, I probably mean spiritual & hard to understand. Let me explain. I wrote a poem specifically for the Bright Wings Poetry Contest with @ekstasismagazine & @makersandmystics last month. It came to me like an avalanche. It’s a poem about the darkest & hardest nights of my illness (sepsis, endometriosis, bedridden, surgical complications) when I no longer wanted to live. I prayed that God would let me die. I begged him. He didn’t. ✨And then one day, a little light got in. And then a little more. I thank God he DIDN’T answer my prayers. 🦉 What is unique about this poem is the strong presence & symbol of the owl. I’ve never included an owl in my poetry before, but this is what the creative force gave me that night. I knew—I think—in my subconscious that visitations from owls carry a strong symbology: wisdom, health, a harbinger or life, death, or the good that is to come. So, I submitted my poem & waited with absolutely ZERO expectation of it being recognized—& especially so when I read there were 700 poems submitted. Well, a few weeks later, right after we returned home in the new year from the Blue Ridge Mountains, my husband came in from outside all excited: “Girls, you’ve got to come see this! Quick & quiet!!” My daughter & I followed. 🦉It was an owl, perched on our neighbor’s mailbox. We’ve lived here 10 years & have never seen one. It allowed us within feet of it, staring into our eyes (my soul). Then it flew & perched in a nearby tree. My daughter & I stayed with it for at least 10 minutes. I took pictures on my phone. When I returned with my camera gear, it was gone. We all agreed that this experience was BEYOND magical. “A barred owl!!! Can you believe it!?” Oddly, I didn’t think about my poem & the owl there within until I saw the unbelievable news that it was selected in the Audience Choice Award to be voted on. Een feestelijke afsluiting voor de tentoonstelling ´Ekstasis. Een universum van licht en geluid': deelnemende kunstenaars Casimir Geelhoed en Anni Nöps geven deze zondag een 'Spatial sound performance' in hun geluidsinstallatie ´Borderlands´. Een bijna meditatieve ervaring van verschillende geluiden die je vanaf verschillende punten in de ruimte bereiken. Om 15.00 uur start de performance van Anni Nöps (circa 20 min.), gevolgd door de performance van Casimir Geelhoed (circa 30 min.). Heb jij Ekstasis nog niet gezien of wil je nog een laatste keer genieten van de verschillende kunstwerken en installaties? Dan is dit de kers op de taart die je niet wilt missen. Het bijwonen van de performances op zondag 14 januari is gratis, maar je dient wel een geldig museumticket te hebben. Vrijdag aanstaande starten we met het eerste groepje. We duiken in een van de kunstwerken uit de geweldige tentoonstelling Ekstasis. Je bent van harte welkom om aan te sluiten. Via slowww looking ook wel mindful kijken genoemd kom je in een ontspannen staat met al je aandacht in het NU en observeer je het kunstwerk. Vervolgens ga je op ontdekkingstocht in de mogelijke wereld die de kunstenaar via het kunstwerk heeft gecreëerd. Dit brengt je in contact met je intuïtie en verbeeldingskracht. Zo ontstaat ruimte voor inzichten, inspiratie, nieuwe aanknopingspunten, ideeën, oplossingen of een ander perspectief op een onderwerp (werk/privé/werelds/filosofisch) dat jou bezighoudt. Het is een totaal andere kunstbeleving dan een “gewoon museumbezoek”. (Dus het maakt niet uit als je de tentoonstelling al hebt bezocht.) De tentoonstelling, die maar liefst vier ballen krijgt van NRC, bracht met haar zinsbegoochelende installaties al vele bezoekers in extase. Laat je bijvoorbeeld in het donker meevoeren op het ritme van geluid in de installatie ‘Borderlands’ van kunstenaars Casimir Geelhoed en Anni Nöps. Of ontdek de futuristische wereld van kunstenaar Heleen Blanken, die met haar installatie ‘Abiosis’ een poëtische kijk op de toekomst geeft waarin mens, natuur en technologie zijn versmolten. 2024 is here! Kick-off met een favoriet van 2023. Afgelopen jaar stond voor mij in het teken van veranderingen. Eerst moest ik even afstuderen. Nu werk ik als fulltime docent op twee scholen, free-lance fotograaf en dessinontwerpster. Een grote sprong in het diepe.
