One day like today, in 1966, one of the most important and influential albums in the history of music was released under the support of the Capitol label and the production of Brian Wilson himself: 'Pet Sounds' by The Beach Boys. An album where Brian and company abandoned their surf style and lyrics about girls and the beach, which were the hallmark of the band, to focus on a musical and lyrical growth, with high doses of art rock and baroque pop, which enclosed a kaleidoscope of psychedelia, pop, jazz and classical music, also marking the beginning of the avant-garde in rock. This path was inspired by the artistic growth that The Beatles had presented in 'Rubber Soul', so Brian Wilson decides to compete against the quartet, his answer being 'Pet Sounds', which presented such an avant-garde production that it was an influence for the later works of the Liverpool quartet. Pet Sounds' is as important for the development of sophisticated rock as was 'Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band' (which would be created as The Beatles' answer to 'Pet Sounds'), and as an additional fact, the successor of this album would be 'Smile', which was the new answer of The Beach Boys to Sgt. Peppers, but because of complications due to the overblown production, and dissatisfaction with the final result, Brian Wilson aborted its release, considering it inferior to 'Sgt. Melancholijna, senna aranżacja tego utworu sprawia, że w spokoju wysłuchujemy smutnej spowiedzi Walkera o poznanej kiedyś dziewczynie i jesteśmy uwodzeni plumkającą gitarą oraz nienachalną orkiestracją. Jednak dzięki prostemu zabiegowi, jakim jest umieszczenie w tle upiornego soundscape’u, który świdruje prawą słuchawkę, twórca wlewa trochę niepewności w ten pościelowy utwór i nie pozwala nam na gnuśną drzemkę, w czasie odsłuchu. Tak się kiedyś nagrywało muzykę... VINYL 304. Father John Misty - Chloë and the Next 20th Century 2022 Even though this dude’s a bit trendy and not at all cool to like, I’ve been a big fan since I Love You Honeybear came out. I think he writes dead good songs and performs them with a sort of effortless swagger. Got a lot of love for this relatively new one, with an overall quite gentle mood and more than a nod to the past. Some really lovely moments and a great narrative. Q4 sweeps along majestically, and (Everything But) Her Love’s melody really reminds me of a Divine Comedy track, which is fine. Funny Girl is delightful. Best track: Funny Girl. Rating: 4. Keeper? Between the Buttons, despite being a prelude to a chaotic year for the Stones, 1967, is undoubtedly one of the Stones’ best works. It is also a preamble to a miraculous year for music, and I assume that the Stones begin the unparalleled miracle of 67 quite well. Many compare it to their previous, Aftermath. Although I understand why, as there are Jones’s characteristic musical elements, I see Between as a much more introspective and experimental work. Brian Jones already showed the signs of someone dealing with his own complex and chaotic interior - and the Glimmer Twins, during the song ‘Connection’, vented about the great pressure from the English state and the media on the band. Despite the mystical and baroque elements found in this album - typical of the 1960s - screams and almost predicts a dark moment coming ahead. A silent tension you can almost touch. You can feel that with experience by hearing Jones’s organ. It’s as if the streets of London in the 60s were inherent there. The ethereal and, at the same time, problematic and excessive energy of the 60s. It has a little bit of everything, from a not-so-implied sensuality in ‘Let’s Spend the Night Together’ along with a stunning melody, and melancholy in ‘She Smiled Sweetly’. ‘Ruby Tuesday’ is the one that remains most famous from this album today, but I consider all of them from this album equally impeccable. Although the darkness, this album is sweet, in a slightly playful way. I love all the compositions on this record, especially ‘My Obsession’ and Yesterday’s Papers. It’s an accurate reflection of what this album is for me - it screams modernity, a desire for youth to reform their society. Let’s leave the things of yesterday and try something new, as they also did beautifully with the follow-up album, ‘Their Satanic Majesties Request’. Between The Buttons is not an album for those who enjoy the band’s characteristic sound, but it is certainly one to get to know them more deeply and observe the potential of incredible musicians. Not a dated album, far from it - it captures the essence of the decade, without stereotyping it. You live this moment with them.
