#MayVinylChallenge Day 17: Celebrate the maker (producer / label / pressing): Larry Page sadly passed away last month and was a man of many talents. As well as managing The Kinks and producing The Troggs “Wild Thing” he set up a couple of independent labels that had number one singles: Page One Records (“Hitchin’ a Ride” by Vanity Fare) and Penny Farthing (“Venus” by Shocking Blue). Trying to cash in on the orchestral treatment of The Beatles tracks that George Martin had released as “Off The Beatle Track, The Larry Page Orchestra released “Kinky Music”. Its a bit of a cheesy curio and doesn’t feature any of the band, but does feature Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones in some early session work. (2023) マクロスMACROSS 82-99 - ネオ東京 (2013) Vantage - Nightlife (2020) Night Tempo - Night Tempo Presents The Showa Idol’s Groove (2021) Desired - Desired (2017) I have been an avid fan of the record label Neoncity Records since discovering them late 2017. The first cassette I ever bought from them, in early 2018, with the compilation Sailor Team Hits! (2018) and then the first record I ordered was Desired’s fantastic album Timeless (2018). Since then I’ve been buying many of their releases. Not everything, but a decent amount of their output. Here are some of my recent purchases from the past year. The first record (the one I’m holding) is a compilation of four artists to celebrate the 6th anniversary of the label and as the 100th release, NCR100. Macross 82-99, Vantage, Night Tempo and Desired have put out some of their best work under this record label. All offer unique takes on the vaporwave sub genre, future funk, mixing and sampling classic Japanese disco and city pop. This is a great compilation that shows off two tracks of every artists best work. The albums behind me are as follows - Macross 82-99’s debut album, Neo Tokyo, a vibrant example of house and jazz-funk. The 2nd record is Vantage’s 3rd album, Nightlife - an excellently crafted disco record and an essential future funk mix. Night Tempo’s record on the lower left shelf is a compilation of reworked city pop and 80s idol music, introducing me to a world of music I was unaware of. The last record is Desired’s self titles album, a perfect record to find your groove and a damn fine example of future funk. I love this record label. Their pressings look and sound phenomenal, never had a bad copy of anything from them. In an ideal world I’d have everything they put out in my collection. Won’t lie, I’m working on it. The theme today for the #MayVinylChallenge is “Sweet Sixteen: Early Influences From Formative Years.” #RyoFukui’s debut album Scenery came out the year I turned 12, but I didn’t hear it until my late 20s (mind you, that’s still in the first half of my life, and very early in my jazz-appreciation phase, so definitely formative). . In 1992 I moved to Japan, and for my first 2+ years there, living in Sapporo, 3 out of 4 Wednesdays a month a group of us ESL teachers hit a jazz bar just off Tanuki Koji for some beers and unwinding. 90% of the time it was the same trio playing, with a small, bald man wearing John Lennon glasses at the piano. Little did I know that this was one of the godfathers of #JapaneseJazz; I didn’t learn who he really was until I started hitting #JazzKissa’s in earnest in 2019. . If you don’t know Fukui-san’s music, he’s well worth exploring. He only put out five records in his lifetime, and a sixth (double live) was released during the pandemic. It was the year I discovered the most music, probably ever. I went down rabbit holes, finding out what musicians influenced my favorite bands, and dove into their discographies. I think this is where my thirst for diversity in my music collection and in general, stems from. I always feel a need to continuously branch out, and take what I’m currently listening to, a step beyond. Back then I was obsessed with Elvis Costello but also My Chemical Romance but also Pink Floyd but also Jimmy Eat World but also The Pixies but also Taking Back Sunday but also Misfits. May Vinyl Challenge / Day 16 / The Offspring: Americana/ 2018 20th anniversary edition Sweet 16 - Early influences from formative years. Trying to pick an album for this theme proved problematic… there was just so much. I devoured new music as a teen. My first instinct was to post The Tea Party, yet again, but they’ve made plenty of appearances on my IG. However, @offspring were just as important and my first real foray into the realms of punk/pop-punk. This was the album that made me look more into their back catalogue (ignition is still my favourite) and got me digging through the punk sections of HMV and Music World. It opened a door for me and I’ve never looked back. The tour for this album was also my first real rock concert. Previously I had only been to the likes of Weird Al or Garth Brooks. Then my friend was showing me this new album Stranger Than Fiction by Bad Religion. I was hesitant because of the name of the band but I ignored the Holy Ghost and listened to it and fell in love. 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟏𝟔: 𝐒𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝟏𝟔 - 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 These albums (amongst others) were on repeat during my teenage years. I turned 16 in 1994, and these albums were released that year or the couple of years before. I still enjoy listening to them now, and they’re very nostalgic for me. I guess they helped to shape my tastes. #mayvinylchallenge Day 16: Sweet 16 - Early Influences From Formative Years - The Verve Pipe - Villains || I realize that most people probably remember The Verve Pipe as a one hit wonder (or confuse them with The Verve). I definitely fell for this album because of The Freshmen, but once I got a hold of the CD I devoured the entire thing, start to finish, over and over again. Lyrically, The Verve Pipe is quite clever with solid story telling and subtle meanings (this continues in other albums though their sonic pallet has softened over time) and combined with a crunchy, albeit radio-ready, grunge sound created something that today I still can't enough of (and my sonic pallet has gotten heavier and noisier with age). || #vinylcommunity #vinylrecords #recordcollection #mayvinylchallenge2024 #thevervepipe #vervepipe #90s #90smusic #rockmusic #music

Day 16 - early influences from formative years. From middle school to high school to early 2000’s, I had these all on CD before moving them to the LP format. As mentioned in a previous post, Amphetamine Reptile records really opened the door for everything. It led me to Matador records and then to Relapse Records. From there, to Kranky and Hydrahead. Then introduced more to electronic on learning about Aphex Twin. These weee all the beginning and gateway to stuff I listen and has still stuck with me today. #mayvinylchallenge Day 16: sweet 16 - early influences from formative years I discovered The Smiths by chance when I was in high school. I bought 'Strangeways here we come' at a reduced price (it was the time of CDs, vinyls were going out of fashion). A little later I found this wonderful 12" 45 RPM of "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" on white vinyl. It also contains "Girlfriend in a Coma" from the Strangeways album, plus 2 unreleased tracks. It was a hugely creative period, although Marr and Morrissey weren't speaking to each other and were on the verge of splitting up. #mayvinylchallenge Day 16: Sweet 16 - influences from your formative years The soundtrack of my teens was defined by 2 things: Angst and Anger. 😂 When I was 16, Pantera released their darkest album, The Great Southern Trendkill. It had a huge impact on me. I mean, I was already a fan but this was out of this world. I had that cd on repeat for I-don’t-know-how-long. Today I’m 44 and my tastes have developed and expanded accordingly, but I’m still drawn to some dark stuff. I’ve been a New Model Army fan since I was 14 - but I was 16 when ‘The Ghost of Cain’ was released 🔥. It was the band’s third studio album, the one that raised their profile in the alternative rock scene and was voted ‘Best Album of the Year’ following its release ❤️. I still listen to this album often and from my formative years NMA are still one of my favourite bands to this day. This is a fantastic album with standout tracks for me being The Hunt, Poison Street, Western Dream, Lovesongs and ‘51st State’ which was the only single to be released from it. Fun facts: 🔺The world tour in support on this album also gave Ricky Warwick (The Almighty & Black Star Riders) his first break when he joined NMA as rhythm guitarist. 🔺Album opener ‘The Hunt’ was covered by Sepultura back in 1993 and features on their Chaos A.D. album. Day 16 of #mayvinylchallenge2024 arranged by our host @jennn_erator Today's theme: Sweet 16 - Early Influence / Formative Years I was thinking about all the 80's stuff from teenage years when I realized, that was all influenced by what I was drawn to in the 70's as a child. My faves ranged from Creedence to Kool & The Gang, but what was constantly influencing me was from television and movies. Creature Features (horror films) used Mancini's Experiment in Terror as the intro. All that reverb! The original Svengoolie (horror host Jerry G Bishop) had Link Wray's Rumble overlayed with screams as the intro. More reverb! And all those 50's and 60's horror/sci-fi films on there had great music too! Day the Earth Stood Still, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Godzilla, but especially Planet of the Apes. It was always on and I loved Goldsmith's music, The Omen too! I was a fan of The Monkees TV show, but my ears perked up when the later music like Stepping Stone and Going Down came on. I loved that groovy psych sound! I developed a taste for rockabilly from Happy Days and American Graffiti. Disco funk from Kojak and Barretta! 70's TV laid the foundation! Revenge also happens to be the sweet 16th studio album by KISS! I’d been a KISS fan for many years prior to its release but Revenge is “my kind of situation when I need some perspiration, uh huh”. I love this record; My inner fangirl was breathing fire the first time I heard Gene’s demonic spirit return on “Unholy” and when Sassmaster Stanley Eisen says “I wanna watch some asses shakin’ to the noise the boys are makin’” you ALL better “wave your panties in the air, lick your lips and shake your hair, uh huh” ✨ My mom was pregnant with me when my parents saw KISS at Cobo Hall which was one of the shows recorded for KISS/Alive! But the Revenge tour was the first time I finally got to see KISS outside the womb! My brother took me and we had the BEST time in the worst seats at The Palace of Auburn Hills, Michigan. DAY 16: Sweet 16 - Early influences from formative years Faster Pussycat - Faster Pussycat They say nothing will ever be more important and influential to your musical tastes than what you listened to in high school and college. As a result, I love the 90s music and all that entails but before that my first favorite bands were of the Hair Metal variety and that really paved the way for me. Day 16 of #MayVinylChallenge: Sweet 16 - early influences from formative years Of all the albums I bought blindly with my lawn mowing money during my formative years, none has been as consistently rewarding as Nick Lowe's 1978 solo debut Pure Pop for Now People. Based on the cover, I assumed it was a comedy album of song parodies and there certainly was much humor: a tongue in cheek Bay City Rollers homage called "Rollers Show," the oddball lyrics of "Marie Provost" and "Nutted by Reality," and sly quotations of everyone from Steely Dan to the Jackson 5. But as I learned more about Lowe's roots in British band Brinsley Schwarz and his production work with artists like Elvis Costello (no easy feat without an Internet), I realized there was more to this album than inside jokes. Pure Pop for Now People started a lifelong appreciation of one of the greatest artists to emerge from, and outlast, the new wave era, and it also exposed me to rock 'n' roll at its most raucous ("Heart of the City," "They Called It Rock"), the joyful fun of power pop ("So It Goes"), and the sonic wonders that could be accomplished on a "lo-fi" record - just listen to the stereo imaging of "I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass" and the glorious drama of "Tonight," which proved a Wall of Sound could be built on a shoestring budget. #vinylcommunity #vinylrecords #recordcollector #cratedigging #nowplaying #nowspinning #instavinyl #vinyladdict #mayvinylchallenge2024

My mother brought me this record back from one of her frequent work trips to London around the time it came out (at my request). I think I had heard Charmless Man on MTV and loved it. I already liked Oasis and wasn’t aware I had to choose a side - the britpop war did not really make its way to the media I was consuming as a 12 year old in Belgium. I’m glad it didn’t, it allowed me to enjoy both bands for what they were, untainted by the PR cycle. Is this the best Blur record? Day 16: Sweet 16: Early Influences Run DMC changed the formative rap scene in the 80’s. Prior to them, in middle school I was in the talent show dancing to Planet Rock. I was listening to Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, Kurtis Blow, and Whodini. But the whole scene changed 1984. Track suits, sneakers, leather, fedoras, kangols, and chains busted through. Rhymes with guitars started crossing over and I was so there for it! To me 80’s rap is still the best rap phase! Along with them; LL, P.E., and Ice T (to name a few) raised the bar! You’ll just have to take my word for it but I had the “Beastie Boy” look before they hit the scene but that became my nickname.
