The 1966 World Cup winners England set off to Mexico ‘70 to defend their title as “The World Beaters” with this collection of crooned / shouted tunes like “Sugar Sugar”, “Lily The Pink” and the classic “Back Home”. Yeah I’m riding you all the way… Soundgarden - Superunknown Been 7 years since we lost Chris. He was a 1 of 1. And now his legend only grows, and kept alive by all of us. I posted (to my story) this album for Day 16 of the #MayVinylChallenge. Sweet 16 - The formative years was the theme and in 94 this was monumental for me. Badmotorfinger was really the first grunge album I loved and when the mighty Soundgarden finally dropped a new one it was my everything to me. They were our Led Zeppelin and once again Chris, Ben, Kim & Matt had made a masterpiece. Overall more palatable than Badmotor there’s a real push and pull here between hard AF moments mixed with more radio friendly tunes. Fell On Black Days showcases how far they’ve come while cuts like Mailman go deep. My favorite Soundgarden song has always been The Day I Tried To Live but it’s the real heavy $hit that gets me. Songs like Limo Wreck, Fresh Tendrils, Like Suicide and Fourth Of July weigh a 1000 pounds each and I love it. Morbid I know, but I want Forth Of July played at my wake. When the gods take me I want that song playing ringing through the night… Impossible to pick but tell me, what’s your favorite song here? Lastly, this day is reminder that life is too short. Go to that show, tell your friends you love them and buy that album if it makes you happy. Love is all we got and regret blows. I only wished I had seen him Chris live. Because nobody sings like you anymore Chris. We miss you. Day 18 of the #mayvinylchallenge by @jennn_erator is ‘packaging wild card: weird/cool/unique’. I think my copy of Truman’s Water’s debut LP, ‘Of Thick Tum’ ticks all the boxes. This is one of the initial run of 300, which came in repainted sleeves from other LPs (mine used to belong to The Mission’s second album, ‘Children’, according to the catalogue number, visible through the paint). The cover art song titles and other info are photocopied onto paper and glued on, and the cover design is hand-coloured in crayon! To addd to the fun, each LP came with unique inserts. Mine has a mystery Polaroid snap, a service record form, and best of all, lead singer Glen Galloway’s membership card to the American Museum of Natural History! Musically, it’s a fantastic mess - shambling, scrambling lo-fi indie-rock blending squalls of noise, kneecapped Sabbath riffs and fractured pop tunes like a demented backwoods cousin to early Pavement and Archers of Loaf. Me thinks this box by one of Holland’s most legendary comedians from the old days is a very unique album packaging, but apparently there’s more in the little suitcase than there should be. From the info I could gather online, there should only be two LP’s in the suitcase, plus one book and a newspaper replica. But what I actually found inside is five LP’s, two books and the newspaper replica. Wim Kan (1911 - 1983) was one of Holland’s most famous, most legendary and most respected comedians. I remember seeing some of his stand up shows on TV as a kid. He was the first one to do New Years Eve shows, starting in 1954 on the radio and from 1973 onwards on TV. The title of the box set that I picked for today’s challenge translates into “The Little Suitcase Of Wim Kan”, and apart from the two LP’s that originally came in it, there’s three LP’s featuring three of his New Years Eve shows that aired on TV (in 1973, 1976 and 1979). I got this suitcase as part of small record (and CD) collection that I was given by a neighbor after one of her family members had died last year. To be honest, I hadn’t opened it yet as I thought this would only be interesting to old people. Wim Kan already was an old man when I saw him perform on TV and for the youngster that I was back then, his audience looked quite old too. So, even though I recall enjoying his comedy shows, I thought it wouldn’t be funny anymore 45+ years later - or at least that it would be much too slow for today’s standards. Founded by William Ackerman and Anne Robinson, WH cut through many of the overblown and overtreated 70s productions with a remarkable clarity of vision, especially in the careful approaches used in the recording of piano solos. My favourite is Basho's Visions of the Country, but that extraordinary album should not eclipse quiet gems like Winston's Winter Into Spring and Story's Unaccountabls Effect. Day 17 of #mayvinylchallenge hosted by @jennn_erator Today's theme: Celebrate Maker / Producer / Label Razormaid! was a remix service out of San Francisco that DJs would subscribe to and exclusively receive these sets of remixed tracks. These remixes were not available elsewhere. Originally they started cutting re-edits on tape, but soon worked with labels and artists to get original elements and create very sophisticated remixes for the time. These are hard to come by and can be pretty pricey depending on which artists appear on the set. These remixes are primarily electronic dance, EBM, house, industrial and New Wave. Amongst the sets here appear Sylvester, Berlin, Tribantura, Psychic TV, B-52's, ABC, Revolting Cocks, Yello, Pet Shop Boys and so on. And that's just these five. There are many, many more sets with the likes of New Order, Depeche Mode, Front 242. Many of them came in these die cut sleeves that allow for a coded label that could be quickly identified. Max Martin helped to produce Eternal Sunshine with Ariana and they did a fantastic job together. Max is truly the main pop producer and his vision shows here. Eternal Sunshine is a very sweet but deep album, it kinda takes some cues from Robyn in my opinion. So many songs here have wonderful production and instrumental while at the same time having the most personal lyrics Ariana has had on her music. There truly wasn’t anyone that could’ve helped make this album other than Max.

When I started actively collecting vinyl in 2014 Empress Rising was released and completely blew me away. Daniel Hall started the label in 2013 and signed a ton of amazing psych, doom, and everything in between bands, releasing some amazing records and digging up the original, forgotten innovators of the early psyche-rock movement and featured them in the ever expanding Brown Acid series. I watched another amazing documentary recently (I’m a sucker for music docs!), “Squaring the Circle: The Story of Hipgnosis”, where they go into the history and story of the album art design studio, focusing on some of their most famous covers and stories around how they got them. I’m focusing on some of these, and purposely didn’t include famous covers like Dark Side of the Moon or Houses of the Holy (even though they’re great). I wanted to pick some other ones I had in my collection. Day 17 of the #mayvinylchallenge — celebrating the maker Well, who else would I do except Steve Albini? I picked him two or three years ago when this came up in the challenge. But Steve was the realest. He ran his own studio, even answered the phone there, and seemed to work with anyone who’d ask — from Page and Plant to some band you’ve probably never heard of and a whole lot in between; and he did what he loved, an advocate for the artists themselves, wanting to be paid like a plumber, a great writer, who somehow was oddly an early edge lord type, a snob, cranky, yet felt like a wise uncle and I’m sure he was a great dude. And of course Albini had a very distinct sound and I loved it. Every record he recorded just sounded amazing on a good stereo. Here are some of my favorite albums he did (except Surfer Rosa, which would probably ensure this got taken down). He told me that he was in Germany guarding a missile base during the Vietnam war. He would earn money and he used it to buy records and stereo equipment back then while he was there. He bought the first Black Sabbath album and he said that the label was like a hypnotic spiral and I didn’t know what he meant until I looked into it that Black Sabbath’s albums were pressed on the vertigo label in Europe. Seeing that label spin was one of the coolest things I’ve seen on a turntable and I loved that label ever since. Even the UFO and what I call the rainbow variation look awesome too. Day 17 of the #mayvinylchallenge (hosted by @jennn_erator) is all about the maker/producer/label. I could show off some Impulse! or Blue Note, but the very first record label I started to collect around 2005 was CTI Records, spearheaded by legend Creed Taylor, who founded the label in 1967. I was still fairly new to jazz and was also getting into sampling on my MPC 1000. I knew there would always be something great to sample on any of these records, and the cover art was always amazing. Back then, I picked these up for around $10-20 Canadian. While some of them are a little cheesy, there are some legitimate bangers and killer grooves.
