Sometimes a work of musical art so groundbreaking and revolutionary is released, that you just simply cannot focus elsewhere. Your historical brain kicks in. What was happening at the time of this release? What else was out at the same time? With the benefit of hindsight, how far in advance and before it's time is this piece of music? This magnificent, unbelievable merging of early #africa and American #contemporary #jazz is one such parcel of brilliance. Ghanian musician extraordinaire #guywarren , most notably known as the inventor of #afrojazz , along with seriously underrated drummer #redsaunders and under the superb direction of American jazz pianist, arranger, composer and educator #geneesposito teamed together in #1957 to create this spectacular LP. It is one of the highest quality listening experiences for me and indeed many, emulating sounds which no doubt influenced people like #felakuti some 10 years later. Like many of the innovative and brilliantly disruptive things coming from the likes of #charlesmingus , #theloniousmonk , #milesdavis etc, this record is more than deserving of the same pioneering, radical accolades. Issued in Australia on our beautiful, homegrown yellow #festivalrecords in 1958, the album was by no means a household name, but made its way into serious jazz and music lovers' homes. The true sales numbers will probably never be known, but it's not the easiest to come by today, so you can imagine my heart beating through the walls of my chest when it showed up at a rural Sunday market a few months ago. Ten Years After - Cricklewood Green Originally released in 1970, it is their fourth album. Pressing shown is a 1980s reissue. Honestly, it wasn't until I'd love to change the world hit the radio waves when I started to hear about them. By then, I was heavy into hard rock and prog rock. These guys are great, what a oversight on my part. Thankfully, I found the blues and more so blues rock. Even though it was and always has been an integral part of rock music. Since then, I have always felt Alvin Lee has been an underrated musician, vocalist, and songwriter. As well Ten Years After is one of those (almost forgotten true rock bands). Dionne Warwick - Soulful My preteen years were full of songs from AM 📻. Especially from age 10 -12. One of the more familiar voices I remember is @therealdionnew who was more known for her collaborations with Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Then, in 1969, she released this album Soulful. I vaguely remember seeing the cover and hearing her cover of You've lost that loving feeling on the radio. At some point, I got a copy of this record and fell in love with her voice. Day 26 of #diggdougsvinylchallenge hosted by @digg_d0ug “Grateful Dad” “Best Of Cream” by Cream For this post I’d like to approach this in two parts. The first of which is how grateful I am for my father sharing his love of music with me. As I have talked about in other past posts, I had an extremely challenging relationship with my father. Most of it stems from the horrific experiences he had while serving during the Vietnam War and how he chose to handle it when he came back home through his alcohol abuse. Needless to say it was difficult for me as a child to spend any meaningful quality time with him. One of the few ways we could though was listening to music together. My father seemed to delight in introducing music to me through records he had collected. This album posted “Best of Cream” was one such album. It really served as a gateway album into rock music for myself at a very young age and I am grateful to have been able to do that with my father. The album shown is the very copy we listened to together… The second part of this post is really how blessed I am to be the father of two amazing daughters. Within the last year I have seen both my girls graduate from their respective colleges and begin finding their way within their respective fields of study. It’s incredible how fast time has gone but there’s been nothing more rewarding in my life than seeing them grow and flourish over the years. Day 25 of #diggdougsvinylchallenge hosted by @digg_d0ug “At The Car Wash” “Like Flies On Sherbert” by Alex Chilton Alex Chilton’s 1979 solo release is a fun “hot mess” of an album IMHO. Although many critics at the time of the release considered it as one of the worst albums ever recorded, sentiments have eased a bit on that stance with time. Alex claimed in interviews that he purposely wanted it to sound sloppy and unpolished, which he definitely achieved. For the album’s cover shot Alex brought in American photographer William Eggleston who previously did the cover of Big Star’s second album “Radio City”. The image that was used is titled “Dolls On Cadillac, Memphis 1972”. It manages to perfectly capture the weirdly disturbing but oddly compelling nature of the album. So I understand the choice, but the cover has always kinda weirded me out a bit.
