In the late 60’s and early 70’s Sonet put out their lowbudget label Grand Prix which has 150-something entries on Discogs and more keep popping up as time goes. I started collecting these many years ago when i found that they had a lot of beat, blues and psych in their catalogue. Semi-rare stuff like Them Belfast Gypsies, Made in Sweden and Swedish beat-groups could be found but there are also looooads and loads of junk… The thing i like about it is that all the releases has the same Grand Prix-logo somewhere on the cover, and the backcover has the same design in different colors. Uniformity does it! Talk Talk - The Colour Of Spring 2LP (1986, this version 2012) For a bootleg (I had no idea - source Discogs), this looks and sounds great. It’s presented as a Japanese pressing with obi and insert on heavy vinyl. The second (purple) disc includes the three superb contemporary non album b-sides* plus three tracks from the Live At Montreux Jazz Festival 1986 DVD (performance and transfer to vinyl is faultless). My eternal regret is never having made it to one of their shows. Up there in my ten favourite albums list - and the best Talk Talk album, which is high praise when you know what they did next... it’s what audio perfection sounds like. A great "if you know you know" record. Nominally a King Crimson affiliated project (both Ian McDonald and Michael Giles were in the early version of the band) but meanwhile I might enjoy it more than all but a couple KC records. This is not too far off from the Canterbury sound, but very accessible with some almost Beatlesque moments. Steve Winwood plays on it, too! I think it's fantastic and was pleased to find this beautiful copy at @elizarecords, which definitely deserves recognition as one of the top spots for digging in the Arch City. Happy 76th birthday to Steve Winwood, born on this day in 1948. Stephen Lawrence Winwood is primarily a vocalist and keyboardist, but also plays a wide variety of other instruments. On several of his solo albums he recorded all instrumentation including drums, guitars, and keyboards. He was a member of The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith and Go. He also has had a successful solo career with hits including “While You See a Chance,” “Valerie,” “Back in the High Life Again” and two US Billboard Hot 100 number ones, “Higher Love” and “Roll with It.” He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Traffic in 2004. “Shoot Out at the Fantasy Factory” is the 6th studio album from Traffic, released in February of 1973. It followed their 1971 album “The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys” and has only 5 songs. Shoot Out had slightly poorer reviews than its predecessor, but did reach #6 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart. Like its predecessor, the original jacket for the Shoot Out LP has its top right and bottom left corners clipped, to help create the 3-D illusion. I don’t understand how critics could deem the content of this release as less than Low Spark. It’s every bit as good. In fact it may be my favorite Traffic album. “Roll Right Stones” is excellent. There are 4 members of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section (David Hood, Roger Hawkins, Barry Beckett, and Jimmy Johnson) on this album. Hood and Hawkins are listed as members of Traffic.
