In the late 60’s and early 70’s Sonet put out their lowbudget label Grand Prix which has 150-something entries on Discogs and more keep popping up as time goes. I started collecting these many years ago when i found that they had a lot of beat, blues and psych in their catalogue. Semi-rare stuff like Them Belfast Gypsies, Made in Sweden and Swedish beat-groups could be found but there are also looooads and loads of junk… The thing i like about it is that all the releases has the same Grand Prix-logo somewhere on the cover, and the backcover has the same design in different colors. Uniformity does it! I’m diving deep into the Swedish 1960s pop scene. Heavily inspired by the British and US scenes, 99% of it is sung in English. Although their international success varied (some becoming pretty big in mainland Europe and Scandinavia), the ever so important UK/US markets didn’t take much notice – not even when a few of these groups recorded at Abbey Road, released singles, appeared on TV and did tours in the UK. Here are some of my favourites so far: 1. Tages – One of the most famous groups. From Gothenburg. Tried to break into the UK twice but were hindered first time for not having the right work permits, and the second when their 1967 single “She’s Having a Baby Now” was banned by the BBC for being too controversial. Their final LP, “Studio”, is considered one of the best non-native English pop records of the 60s. Changed name to Blond and released the superb “The Lilac Years” LP in 1969. 2. Ola & The Janglers – Very popular. From Stockholm. Became good songwriters and producers (although the lead singer has quite a thick Swedish accent). The only Swedish group to make it on the US Billboard Hot 100, hitting no. 92 with the 1969 hit “Let’s Dance”. 3. (The) Hep Stars – The most popular group in Sweden, especially in terms of list hits. From Stockholm. Their 1966 self titled LP featured mainly self-penned songs in a folk-rock fashion. Famous for its member Benny Andersson, who would later form ABBA. 4. Slam Creepers – From Vansbro. Led by organist and singer Björn Skifs. Highly regarded by Paul Jones and Allan Clarke for his singing style. Skifs would later get success with his band Blue Swede and the song “Hooked on a Feeling”, which became a US no. 1 hit in 1974. 5. (The) Hounds – A Stockholm group that focused on harmonies. Got big with “Exodus” in 1966 and reached no. 1 in Sweden with “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” in 1967. Released two LP:s and starred in a film before breaking up. 6. (The) Jackpots – One of the best groups from Sweden musically. From Gothenburg. Often sang in four part harmonies. More famous in mainland Europe and Scandinavia than in Sweden. Toured the UK and apparently had The Hollies come watch ”to check the competition”. Made two great LP:s.

“The Pop League – For the UN and Refugee-67” This was a record by the United Nations Association of Sweden and Swedish Radio for a campaign called "Flykting-67" (Refugee-67). The majority of the gains made from the sales went to assist refugees, mainly from south Sudan, channeled through four Swedish help organisations including the Swedish Red Cross and Save the Children. The record has twelve songs by the twelve leading Swedish pop groups of the time, with the backside of the sleeve having short texts about each band. The songs were specially composed and recorded for this LP and donated by the groups. OLA HÅKANSSON - född 1945 i Stockholm. Låtskrivare, sångare och producent. Sångare i Ola and the Janglers och Secret Service. Redan som barn var olika musikaliskt aktiv, i Radiotjänsts gosskör. 1969 medverkade han i Melodifestivalen men fick inte en enda poäng. Under 1970-talet studerade Ola vid Handels. Senare under 1970-talet blev det musik igen och stora framgångar med gruppen Secret Service och bland annat singeln "Oh Susie".
