Mais par la grâce de notre Pépite du jour, digne d’une chanson de Steely Dan – ok, peut-être pas des chefs-d’œuvre du Dan, mais c’est pour situer le niveau –, il restera longtemps dans la nôtre. Dans Casablanca, sa voix caressante et un peu lasse – cool quoi – se mêle parfaitement à la musique. Parmi les orfèvres de studio qui brillent à ses côtés, il faut séance tenante citer deux notoires usual suspects : Victor Feldman aux percussions, qui mailloches en main signe un chouette solo de vibraphone – « Tonton Fred, ça existe encore les solos de vibraphone dans les chansons pop ? Tu en as d’autres des questions comme ça ? Dane Donohue was born and raised in Mansfield, Ohio on August 30, 1948. After 2 years of touring all over the States and Europe playing Jesus in the rock musical "Jesus Christ Super Star" in the early 70's, Dane started to make demo recordings and sent them out to all parties who may show their interest. Thus, Dane got a management contract with Leber-Krebs in New York City and then got an album deal with Columbia Records, USA. Dane took 3 years to complete his solo debut album and it was released in 1978. YACHT ROCK 11: THIS IS YACHT Dane Donohue, the Lost Prince of Yacht Rock, is a particularly interesting figure in yacht rock as he has released only one album in his recording career - one of the seminal LPs in the genre. If not for the renewed appreciation for smooth rock of the late 70s and early 80s, the album would most likely remain obscure. Which makes Dane’s self-titled debut a perfect example of a buried musical gem that has only been unearthed for rediscovery due to the yacht rock phenomenon. Around the time Dane was cast in a traveling production of Jesus Christ Superstar, he also found himself being offered a recording deal with Columbia Records based on the strength of a handful of his songs. Talk about a windfall of good fortune. Unfortunately, at the time of its release, the album didn’t resonate with the public, lacked sufficient promotional support, and it was lost to time. Or at least, it was ignored for about 30 years. With an impressive supporting cast of players, including Jay Graydon, Steve Lukather, Larry Carlton, Bill Champlin, Stevie Nicks, JD Souther, Don Henley, Timothy B. Schmit, Chuck Rainey, Mike Porcaro, Steve Gadd, Victor Feldman, Ernie Watts, Jai Winding, and Terrence Boylan in the producer’s chair, the sessions were primed to turn out something great. What came of the recordings would comprise a potpourri of key yacht elements - jazz, R&B, electric piano, shuffling drum rhythms, sentimental fool lyrics - all packaged in a smooth production. Evie Sands began recording as a teenager in the mid-1960s. After a rocky start and having trouble with unreliable record executives who stole her songs, she finally had a hit single with Any Way That You Want Me in 1969. Her debut album, also named Any Way That You Want Me, was released several months after the single had peaked. In 1975 Estate of Mind saw the light of day on Capitol Records. Produced by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter, the album marked her continued output as a first class singer/songwriter. I have no idea how this gorgeously crafted album of Laurel Canyon lullabies and airy Highway 101 driving anthems with swoon-worthy backing vocal arrangements slipped by me and my entire childhood when it was released in ‘78. Since it’s sweet arrival to me for the first time last week, I’ve had Dane Donohue on steady rotation, and a hunger for not much else at the moment. If you think this ear candy from the “Lost Prince of Yacht Rock” sounds like a blend of Steely Dan, the Eagles, Fleewood Mac, and Toto, your palate is keen. Dane Donohue『Dane Donohue』(1978) AORを聴き始めたのが高校2年生の頃で、当時は近所のCD屋さんに1000円再発シリーズ「AOR CITY 1000」のラインナップがほとんど揃っていたので、よく学校帰りに寄って買っていました。 このアルバムはその最初期に買ったもの。 まずコンピ盤『Melodies』を、その後『Silk Degrees』や『Airplay』のLPを買って聴いたのですが、『Melodies』のメロウなサウンドのイメージがAORとしてこびりついていたため、2枚ともアルバム全体をAORとして聴くことができず…（「Jump Street」とか「Leave Me Alone」とかでコレジャナイ感にぶつかっていました笑） そんな中サブスクにあがっていた「AOR CITY 1000」のコンピから「Whatever Happened」「Casablanca」を知って気に入り、アルバムを買って聴いてみました。 自分の中で初めて出会った「アルバム全体でAORとして捨て曲なし」盤です。 初めて最後まで通して気持ちよく聴けたというか。 最初はメロディアスなA面が好きで、春休みによく散歩しながら聴いていたのもあって強烈に印象に残っています。 いろいろ聴くうちにフュージョン/スティーリー・ダンっぽい（？）B面も同じくらい好きになりました。 A面B面で割とはっきりカラーが分かれていて、終盤の盛り上がりが圧巻の名曲「Casablanca」に始まり、しっとりとした短めのバラード「Congratulations」で終わる構成、A面ラストが三拍子バラードの「Where Will You Go」。 あれだ！山下達郎『For You』と同じ並びじゃん！ 参加メンバーもAOR作品トップクラスの豪華さ。 今でもAORアルバムのトップ10に入るくらい大好きな一枚です。 #DaneDonohue

Probably the most precious record 💎 in my collection, compared to the price I've paid for this rare and mint paper sleeve edition of Dane Donohue's great album from 1978, which I've missed to buy way back in those years. This is Laura Allan, Bay area multi instrumentalist and singer/songwriter. For a start- she’s my namesake, with a skateboard and cool frock- what could be a better way to lure me in? This album may not be her most well known, but the opening track ticks so many boxes- it’s pretty perfect. (check out her more ethereal ‘new age’ lp ‘Reflections’ featuring Paul Horn on flute) In the 70’s, California born Allan made instruments with her mentor Joellen Lapidus (who sold Joni Mitchell her first dulcimer at Big Sur folk festival) She played Zither on David Crosby’s first solo record & went on to write songs for many other artists, recording three albums herself. She sadly died in 2008, her career is one that is most certainly to be admired. . Another gem i read about whose track is featured on the show is Dane Donohue. “Yacht rocks’ lost prince”. There’s a fascinating read at Narratively.com. Ohio-born Donohue went from a Beatles obsessed teen, to starring in ‘Jesus christ superstar’ before heading to LA to get signed up by Columbia. After an absolute flop of a (scrapped) first album, slightly deflated but not defeated, he went in the studio with California’s crème de la crème of musicians-including Stevie Nicks and Don Henley. What he produced is an outstanding record which unfortunatly didn’t sell as well as they had hoped- 30k which at the time was overshadowed by the likes of ‘Toto’ and wasn’t enough for mainstream airplay. He led an interesting life thereafter but is still making music today, albeit in a far more low-key way. If you love the late 70’s Laurel Canyon sound with a little extra ‘superstar’, check this album out! Not one to be missed! . The music-biz wheel of fortune that decrees fame for some and oblivion for others is extremely arbitrary in its whims and randomness. Take this gentleman, Dane Donohue. In the late 70s he was a talented hopeful in LA looking for a break, a young man from Ohio with a guitar and a dream. He was fortunate enough to get signed to Columbia Records, who spared no expense putting him in the studio with heavy people: Stevie Nicks, Steve Gadd, Chuck Rainey, members of the Eagles, Larry Carlton, Jay Graydon and more still. The resulting album sounds like something you’ve heard on the radio for years, with that polished West Coast/AOR/yacht-rock sound of the era. It sits comfortably next to Steely Dan, Michael McDonald and Fleetwood Mac. So what happened next? Well...have you ever heard of him before?
