May 17, 1976... RAINBOW releases their 2nd studio album RISING. Three new members, replacing the debut album players from ELF, kicked RAINBOW into a new level of musical awesomeness. The band was now composed of Ronnie James Dio on vocals, Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Jimmy Bain on bass, Tony Carey on keyboards and Cozy Powell on drums. The album artwork was painted by Ken Kelly who also painted the DESTROYER and LOVE GUN album covers for KISS. STARGAZER was selected as the lone single from the album. Sadly, three of the five members of RAINBOW are no longer living. “Ooh, you make me live. Whatever this world can give to me. It’s you, you’re all I see. Ooh, you make me live now, honey.” I adore old Queen. That sounds weird, doesn’t it, but it’s true and you get it. I should say “older” Queen, or maybe even 70’s Queen. “You’re My Best Friend”, from their 1975 album, “A Night At The Opera”, was written by the band’s then bassist and now recluse, John Deacon. John wrote some of the band’s biggest songs including “Another One Bites The Dust” and “I Want To Break Free” and joined Roger Taylor, Brian May and Freddie Mercury in 1971 and released their first self titled album in ‘73. This was John’s second single he wrote for the band and it took off and peaked at number 16. Queen performed this song live until 1980 and wasn’t played again until after Freddie’s death. Why they stopped playing the song live I don’t know but the song was written about John’s wife Veronica, whom he is still married to today. John officially retired in 1997, but really took a step back after Freddie passed and once said that “there is no point carrying on”. Queen did eventually carry on and Brian has said that John “is still very much a part of Queen” but in a quiet way. John may live privately, but songs like this are strong, bold and in our faces amazing. Happy Friday. xo
