This self produced album was the first without the aid of the Spiders and producer Ken Scott but it also marked the return of Tony Visconti with his mixing effort. DD started life as a musical adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984. Unfortunately, the Orwell estate denied Bowie the rights to the book. To salvage what he could of the work in progress. David took the songs he had in the cans up to that point to keep with the 1984 theme along with some unrelated new material such as Rebel Rebel and Rock ‘N’ Roll with Me and fleshed it into what would become Diamond Dogs. This album would be promoted by a 3 leg US tour. An elaborate stage production that brought the dystopian Hunger City to life. The tour would be documented on a few live releases and a BBC film titled Cracked Actor. In my younger years, I was completely obsessed with this one and thought it was the greatest things he had ever done. Of course, I was wrong there as other albums would hold the same rank but this was the one where I really tuned into what he was all about. The inclusion of the Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing (Reprise) is well alone worth the price of admission. What’s your favourite track from Diamond Dogs? Or are you a fan of it as a whole? 50 Years ago today David Bowie released the Album Diamond Dogs. It marked a huge shift in direction and style compared to his 2(3 if you count Pin Ups) previous Glam Rock inspired Records. Bowie played various instruments including lead guitar as well. And it is (in my opinion) the first Album where he truly found his voice. “Diamond Dogs” (1974) was the first album to be released after Bowie’s split from the iconic Spiders from Mars. No longer “chained” to Mick Ronson and company, Bowie responds by adopting a sound that is simultaneously more sophisticated and eclectic than “Ziggy Stardust” or “Aladdin Sane”. He is also the first Bowie to incorporate aspects of funk and soul and the seeds of “Young Americans” can be heard in several tracks. Bowie initially intended to follow “Aladdin Sane” with a concept album based on George Orwell’s 1984. At the same time, he was pitching the idea for a full-length musical based on the life of Ziggy Stardust, but a copyright dispute forced him to scrap the 1984 adaptation. “Diamond Dogs” was born from the amalgamation of tracks from both projects and the end result is a loose concept album about post-apocalyptic Manhattan, with lyrical content referencing 1984 in the second half. Somehow, it worked: the album is a captivating mix whose eclecticism provides a microcosm for Bowie’s chameleon-like career. The centerpiece is the triple suite ‘Sweet Thing’ ‘Candidate/‘Sweet Thing (Reprise). It remains one of Bowie’s most notable vocal performances. ‘Rebel Rebel’ was the hit, with an infectious guitar riff ripped straight from Keith Richards’ collection of musical tricks. 1974 was the year of the scavenger and the season of the bitch. It’s hard to believe it’s been 50 years since Halloween Jack slid down the rope onto Love-Me Avenue to hook-up with his little hussy. Hunger City was home to mannequins with kill appeal, red mutant eyes and fleas the size of rats… it really was just rock and roll and not genocide. Here’s a random but true Bowie related story. In 1974, after my High School Graduation, a couple of buddies and I took a road trip from Salt Lake City to Southern California. We made a stop at my friends, cousins house, in Carlsbad. We were listening to Diamond Dogs on tape as we pulled into the driveway. The song “Chant Of The Ever Circling Skeletal Family” was on as we got out of the car. We knocked on their door and when they opened it, his cousins were also listening to “Chant Of The Ever Circling Skeletal Family”. It was a weird, kind of twilight zone moment I’ll never forget.
